Following this morning's announcement of Final Fantasy XIII-2, there's not a lot more information to go on, but we do have the very first screenshot, as well as some quality logo art. If that's not enough for you, we have a trailer too, at least until Square Enix notices!

The screen shows protagonist Lightning in a slightly more revealing garb than her FFXIII attire, with figure-hugging body armor that wouldn't look out of place in several Soho back-alley establishments. Not that I've ever been to such places.

The trailer and logo reveal that Lightning has a rival this time around. Two attractive ladies with giant swords? I must say, that already sounds like an improvement.

Given my feelings toward FFXIII, I'm skeptical about this new game, but I'll try to keep an open mind. So long as they spend less time wanking off the art department and more time writing a decent script, it could turn out well.

The same people who complained about XIII will be the ones lining up for this game.

Let it die

Hrm, I'll care when I see more but I doubt I will touch this.

Your 100% right man. My gf did not like the 1st one very much, though she ended up beating it after 4 or 5 months but I bet she will want this the day it comes out.

I just got to the open-ended part of XIII and now I have to talk myself into playing it again. I am so lacking of time, the corridor time in the game actually worked for me.

FF XIII was the most disappointing n franchise reputation ruining game I've ever played in my life... Not interested in the slightest for a sequel!

Incorrect. I'm completely nonplussed by this announcement. I couldn't even muster up the will to finish XIII; that's how bored I was with the game. Even if Square Enix, having wasted all the resources for the first game on the graphics, decides to make this a true RPG, I won't be purchasing it because I never finished the story from XIII.

Yeah, no thanks. I'll hold out for Versus XIII.

I'm not entirely sure but I think that second "lady" might actually be a man. Amano's artwork might not be the best indicator but the snippet trailer has me slightly convinced due to a very tall figure and slightly masculine face(which can only be seen for 0.0001 seconds). Your guy's thoughts/guesses?

You should put a warning about the trailer, though. It starts with a massive spoiler of the end of XIII, and the game is not that old.

You guys should post the new ff versus 13 trailer, which shows gameplay. I gotta say it looks great.

Where the hell is Versus XIII?

Also, while I did loathe XIII, I'm willing to have an open mind about XIII-2. If they make the story at least somewhat intelligible, that will be a vast improvement.

@Gaffi: I will with "woman" now. Mostly because the logo shows both characters and she sure has a feminine body and face. Not so relevant coming from japanese designers, I know, but will still hold that position until proven wrong.

Like I said in announcement post, I'll be looking forward to this sceptically. Less linearity, better story and a more involving battle system should be Squares main focus for the sequel.

Either that or scrap the project altogether and remake VII. Your choice Square.

Side note: I can't wait for more stuff to be released about the game, prompting fanboy butthurt, and then a Jimquisition featuring Winston Q Prick all about FFXIII-2

I love the new costume. Seems like she's wearing Odin's armor for some reason, and using his shield. It's also a new blade, and I don't see a gun built in.

Music sounds promising, though brief. I'm really hoping that Hamauzu is still doing the OST.

If someone is watching a trailer for a direct sequel to a game they haven't finished yet and doesn't expect to see spoilers, they won't be deterred by a warning.

People are idiots.

No thanks. Not even interested in the least. Even if they add an airship, world map, car, full ranch of chocobos, a lesbian sex scene between that involves Lightning, etc. The first one I found SOOO awful that I'm not even going to consider this one, let alone any other game the director's name is attached to.

The director is a dumbass, Square-Enix never learns from their mistakes, and this game will get a 4/10 or 5/10 score when it comes out on Destructoid while every other gaming site will give it a 9.5/10 trying to make all of the flaws sound positive (I can't believe IGN gave the sound a 9/10 for XIII yet even admitted the music "isn't memorable")

Versus XIII however looks amazing! Simply amazing. I wish that was getting more coverage. I want to hear more about that instead of this crap.

I can't really "hate" XIII since I haven't played it, but why would Square Enix put out a sequel one the original gained such negative reception? I just don't find any sense in it.

Plus there is the fact that it's coming out this year while XIII (as well as Versus) took several years to put out. From that I have a feeling this game will be badly put together and end up using the same battle system with similar locations. (BUT MAYBE THEY'LL ADD TOWNS THIS TIME!) I could be wrong though.

@DrRockso87: The music isn't made up exclusively of 8-bit jingles that a six year old can memorize. But it's definitely memorable, unless you're a moron.

Well I'm really excited for this. At least in theory. I've yet to see or hear anything to suggest this will be bad. C'mon people, it's only just been announced and there's no reaosn to believe that it will be a re-tread of XIII (which itself was neither as bad nor as good as any particular outlet says)

Personally speaking, I'm looking forward to it. The battle system for XIII was fine once it opened up, I personally enjoyed the story, and linearity in games (especially JRPGs) doesn't bother me so much as the illusion of non-linearity does.

If the combat system gets opened up a bit more and we get a bit more control over the individual actions of the characters, this game will be really, really solid.

Bah! Square has lost all credibility. It's been almost 10 years since the last good Final Fantasy game hit the streets, and everything decent they've made since has been, more or less, developed by other studios. TriAce, Ubisoft, Atlus, etc.
The FF series has lost what made 'em great: The music, the characters, and most of all, the story.
Don't think I'll be buying another FF game. At least not 'till the day Jimmy gives one a good review.

I haven't finished it, yet I will try to, don't consider it as bad, and could give it a few more hours to see were its going...

@meteorscrap: The previous game is not even a year old, and this seems to play almost inmediately after the end of the previous one. Its not the best put together trailer, as I have seen trailers of sequels handled better that replaying what seems to be the final video; so, to put a "spoiler warning" would not have been so out of place... That is my excuse for being an idiot, what is your for being an asshole?

It's a trailer to a sequel of a game you haven't finished. It should go without saying that a direct sequel will have spoilers. If you were unsure, don't fucking watch the thing. The game isn't going to be out for months yet, and I doubt it'll see a simultaneous English/Japanese release, so you could be looking at a year or more to finish Final Fantasy XIII before the internet becomes inundated with spoilers.

If you don't want to be spoiled on something, exercise some self-restraint and don't click on videos you KNOW contain events after the end of the game you're playing. As for why I'm being an asshole... I'm irritated by stupidity, which you seem to have an ample supply of.

I hated FFXIII, but I plan on giving it another shot some time in the near future. I figure since I now know exactly what to expect going in, I may end up enjoying it for what it is, instead of what it should have been. That said, I am looking forward to FFXII-2 with cautious optimism, if only because what I saw of Versus XIII makes me hopeful that SE may be taking XIII-2 in a new direction.

actually the other one is male soo...

i cannot wait for this, i am willing to give square another chance on this projects, Versus XIII is basically a appetite for KH III.

hopefully they implement X-2 battle system(which is the best in the series)

the music already feels different due to the composer Masashi Hamauzu leaving after XIII's released.

yeah keep on hating haters, you know you'll at least try this game.

I'm actually excited about this. I thought FFXIII was decent. It wasn't nearly as bad as people say it was, but it also wasn't nearly as good as it could have been. If I'm correct the director said that if FFXIII-2 were to happen (which it is now obviously), they would indeed be able to focus more on the script instead of the graphics.
Of course I won't be naive and get my hopes up too high.

Plenty of people liked the game. See the positive comments here, and in other articles about XIII? Read any of the many other, more positive reviews, besides Jim's? Even if you had called it a mixed reception, I'd argue that it was still more positive than negative, as a whole.

Just because some people here are very vocal about in their dislike about XIII (and they certainly have a right to their view) doesn't negate all the positive opinions. And they certainly won't stop SE from developing a sequel to a game that received many solid reviews and sold a ton of copies.
