Final Fantasy XI Ultimate Edition gets ultra cheaper photo

If you like it when Square Enix puts their foot in your junk repeatedly at a low, low price then this deal is for you: the publisher is lowering the price on the "Final Fantasy XI Ultimate Collection" to $14.99 -- a huge savings considering that it has all the expansions and the three scenarios added in 2009.

If you're interested in the collection, head over to the official Final Fantasy XI Web site and slap down some plastic and sign away your soul. Keep in mind that there probably isn't a better way to practice for Final Fantasy XIV, unless of course, you get into its closed beta. Good luck with that.

One of my friends wanted to pick this up again recently but didn't want to play alone so he bought the game a three-month subscription.

We had some fun and there are a few neat ideas at work in XI, but for the most part it's plagued by the same problem so many SOE products have: It's esoteric, hard to use, needlessly complicated and needs a total UI overhaul. Hopefully they implement some of this for XIV.

That's awful nice of them considering the servers for that game will shut down this year. Donno to me even that low price is a waste of money when it's to play nothing and any effort to making a character goes in the trash.

5 and a half years is enough practice.

What exactly is your source saying they're going to shut down the XI servers this year? Hell, aren't the original Everquest servers still up and running?

Still, though, point taken, at this point it's not worth it to start an XI character with XIV coming down the pipelines.

To say I love the music is an understatement, I listen to it all the time. Partly to help me stay away. The thinking is, I have the music, I don't need to play. But if course, it can have the adverse effect of making me want to go back.

But I haven't.

BRD73, (yea, yea...I know.) the biggest issue I had with it was the constant need to have others help. That's why I like WoW so much. Sure because of the tiny guild I'm in doesn't do massive raids. I can still get semi good gear from PVP. The amount of Gil you need for good gear in that game is (or at least was) sick (coming from a Bard.) They did start to add things to help level solo (like the quest books,) but at this point, I'll wait for XIV.

I love me some FFXI. I started playing back when it first released on the PS2 in the States.

After playing just about every other MMO under the sun I just recently re-upped my account, falling off the wagon as it were. I haven't had very much time to sit down and play it since work keeps me worn out (or going to bed early) and Bioshock 2 and Dante's Inferno came out on the same day.

The one day I sat down and actually set about the task of grinding some levels I managed to get my scholar from 19 to 23 in about a two hour times span. They made leveling a whole lot easier.

This game has a lot of cool ideas, like the job system, the ability to lower your level to that of someone else so you can party together, and that in many situations you can keep most of your gear and re-use it on other classes.

I'm not saying the game is perfect, I just prefer it to WoW, and the many WoW spin offs, I liked grouping better than I like quest grinding for EXP. It's more fun for me. The simplicity of grinding is my favorite thing though.

FFXI is way too difficult to be starting at this point. Even though higher level players can now lower their levels to play with low levels, that should tell you something: there is a serious problem as far as player activity for lower level players. I created an account on one of the busiest servers, Bahamut, and I was shocked to see how few players their were in the starting area of WIndurst. It was a ghost town - much different from the 2003 launch when it was a bustling town. There simply were not enough people to engage. That coupled with the tedious battle system made me put it down.

@Crazyape - I don't understand what's confusting. FFXI and FFXIV are two different MMOs. This collection is FFXI in its present state, with all the expansion packs included.

@Voloman - There is no basis for your claim. At worst, FFXI might be facing some server merging before year's end, but SE hasn't even brought that up yet.

FFXI's problem, at this point, isn't that its too complicated or even leveling up, its that the only people that are sticking around are the people that still care about endgame and endgame content is something FFXI has a little too much of.

See, unlike other MMOs, FFXI never obsoleted any endgame content and never raised the cap beyond what they did in the first expansion. There are very good reasons for those decisions - FFXI allows for gear swapping and the subjob system stays as balanced as it can be.

They have enough endgame content now to where the game as painted itself into a corner. And the playerbase is always going to want more new content for endgames. The early game and the intermediate could be expanded, but the endgame hardcore just don't care.

And the endgame guilds are like working for corporations. SE allowed the players to have too much power and tried to diffuse that power a few years too late into the game. Granted many guilds would have drama and dishonesty going around, but FFXI's lacks any genuine structure - a guild is a glorified chat room and you make up your own rules after that. "Officers" can just invite more people, that's it.

So the endgame - which could be fun if approached right - is a real f'n drag.

I actually bought this a couple of months ago to get back into it, I thought $20 was already a really good deal. $15 is a friggin steal for all that content, especially considering the monthly fee is cheaper than wow as well (unless you wind up making like 6 mules or something). I'd probably still be playing if the missus didn't get the wow itch again.

Also, a warning to anybody going out and buying the computer version - if you pay attention to the box, you'll see a notice about needing a credit card that supports either Verified by Visa or Mastercard SecureCode. They made changes to the credit card requirements a few months before I rejoined so that the registration will not accept any card that doesn't meet either of those requirements. I wound up having to reinstall my xbox 360 version of the game (which has no such requirement) and reopen my account there.

FFXI was the best MMO I've ever played and I've played a LOT of MMOs. I played FFXI for 6 years on and off and I've never been drawn into a game like that one.

Anyone who says it's too difficult can suck a dick. Thanks to those bastards it became WAY too easy. People whined and complained and bitched. I got my RDM from lv1 to lv75 (with some merit points) in 1 week. That's bullshit. It should take at least a month of hard work to get the final level on any job. Bitches ruined everything that was amazing about that game. Yet, it's still the best MMORPG out there.

"I got my RDM from lv1 to lv75 (with some merit points) in 1 week."

This proves nothing about being too easy or hard, it proves that you have nothing better to do than grind for a straight week in a game. I can imagine there was a lot of powerlevelling and abusing the really good camps that were made post-level sync, and possibly some astral-burning depending how recently this was. Just because you can do something doesn't mean it should be done.

I agree with the people talking about the overly complicated nature of the game.
Though I can tell you this, the game was created to be played with a controller and is much easier to play in that sense. I mean, if you picked up a controller to play it the learning curve would be a lot less steep, but then you lose your keyboard for chatting.

Anyways, they need to rid themselves of playonline as well, that or make it more managable. You shouldnt need two separate log ins for one.

I for one believe that they have learned a lot from their first MMO, especially since its older than WoW and I think they will be making a lot of positive changes to the way they do things. But it does remain to be seen.
