Final Fantasy XI boss causes vomiting, takes 18 hours to beat photo

A few months ago, 1up ran a story detailing a Square Enix-produced strategy for Final Fantasy XI's toughest boss, the ridiculously-titled Absolute Virtue. More recently, at the Premier Site Summit event in late July, Sage Sundi, the Global Online Producer and Lead Game Master for Final Fantasy XI, claimed that the Absolute Virtue battle takes about 18 hours.

Yeah, you read that right. There's a boss in Final Fantasy XI that takes 18 hours. This raises a few questions, the least of which is WTF. Secondly, why would anyone spend 18 hours on one boss? There's a reason I will never understand MMOs, and this is it. Nevertheless, the linkshell (like a guild or clan) Beyond the Limitation has since beaten Absolute Virtue.

A recent update to the game, however, has brought an entirely new set of megabosses along with it. The toughest of these has an equally grandiose moniker: Pandemonium Warden. Never ones to back down from a challenge, Beyond the Limitation took it on, but had to quit after a grueling 18 hours.

Says player Sylphet of BtL:

People were passing out and getting physically ill. We decided to end it before we risked turning into a horrible new story about how video games ruin people’s lives.

Sylphet also mentions that several members of the linkshell actually vomited over the course of the battle.

With this in mind, Square-Enix' reminder that players shouldn't let Final Fantasy XI interfere with their school, work, families, or physical health -- shown at the beginning of every play session -- seems ironic at best and hypocritical at worst. Square Enix' critics are quick to accuse that these types of time-consuming challenges are simply an attempt to keep players interested and to stem the loss of players that Final Fantasy XI servers have been experiencing recently.

Wow. Do these hyper-hardcore peeps think they're going to get $1million each? Or meet the president? A figurine in the post?
No. One day, after constant grinding, player switching, and maybe an otaku sacrifice, that mass of zeros and ones will keel over the dissolve. All they'll get is bragging rights to the 0.001% of the internet that would ever care. And 5 gold.

Those wacky Koreans are going to die trying this... it boggles the mind.

Suddenly, I want to play FFXI again.

What's funny is, this seems crazy to normal people. But to people who have played FFXI, it seems completely normal. Because we've been to the other side of the rainbow, and it's bad. Real bad.

This stuff has got to be the stupidest FFXI-related argument I've ever stumbled upon, seriously.

People with Maat's caps, relics, multiple 75's, million of gils by their names (many of which most likely earned bot’ting and cheating), thousands of merits, at least 400+ days (on average...) of actual playtime under their belts who've probably spent half of the past 5 years sitting on their asses in front of a monitor whilst attending the biggest weeaboo grindfest in the recent history of electronic entertainment...bitching about the lenght of a top-end boss fight, how deliciously ironic. If I was the SE representative who lurks on BG I'd kick their accounts in the troposphere for going overboard

If it's such a concern why didn’t they just ally with another linkshell and took shifts? Tell you what, this is just a bunch of dumbasses whose greed for in-game pixelated items has gotten out of hands. How about you stop being butthurt hypocrites just because you couldn't take it down instead, and stop craving for intarnetz notoriety while you're at it.

Also, who in their right mind would play a videogame to the point of getting phisically sick and start throwing up...they're even more retarded than I thought.

besides, who the fuck DOESN'T stay awake and active for more than 18 hours straight on saturday evening/monday morning whether they're playing FFXI or not; I would've understood if they gave up because it was getting overly boring but...what kind of pathetic spineless tool couldn't PHISICALLY handle something AS BASIC and EFFORTLESS as typing on a keyboard/looking at a screen, even if it was for whatever hours straight, I mean are you KIDDING me?

Just for the sake of comparison, I've recently worked on a research project on the OVID database (activity which is, intellectually wise, much more tiresome than playing fucking FFXI, trust me) for one of my classes for what...most likely 36~40 hours in a row (can't remember exactly, I just recall my notebook had just fried its motherboard vaporizing all the stuff I had been working for the previous 2 weeks and the paper was due a few days later) without sleeping,

then did my public presentation in front of the medical staff,

then worked 8 hours as usual

and then picked up my gf 40 miles away at which point I

proceeded to have the usual friday night (aperitif > dinner > cinema > club > sex > hazelnuts icecream, you get the point) and was feeling just fine before hitting the sack...and I'm no superman either.

These guys must’ve been seriously out of shape for someone who's supposed to be in their 20's (educated guess) and those who read these articles but aren’t actually into FFXI should realize that:

A. most of the people involved are either basement dwellers or insane JP Otaku who spend, on average, more than 10 hours/day playing their MMO’s ANYWAY and regardless which boss they’re fighting and that
B. the aforementioned battle wasn’t even the longest ever reported, a couple of years ago some LS on Remora stalled Absolute Virtue for about 48 hr’s IN A ROW before taking it down

thus their complaints are totally out of place, besides no one has held a gun to their head intimating to fight Pandemonium that way either.

18 hours is not the average time taken to do things in the game. It is, far and away, an extreme among extremes. I've been playing FFXI for over 3 years, and haven't so much as *seen* this thing. As Maxx said earlier, the longest single instanced event (Dynamis) is 3-3.5 hours, which a very large portion of people who have level 75 jobs don't even participate in due to the somewhat low time/rewards ratio, on top of the fact that most linkshells have 32+ people, which makes a very long line to wait in for your gear. Since then, there have been tons of new events which can be done in smaller groups and take much less time. Limbus, Assaults, Salvage, and Einherjar come to mind, all of which can be done with 18 or less people (except Einherjar, I think you can go up to 36 people on that, but I don't do it anyways) and take less than 2 hours from entrance to finish.

@Okano, Yes, I'm sure that just about everyone is awake for over 18 hours on a regular basis, but I'm assuming they didn't pop the boss as soon as they woke up, it was most likely after having been awake for a good 8 hours or so, which puts them at about 26 hours awake, 18 of which are spent planted in front of a TV screen/PC monitor. As Rukenshin said on the BG threads, the physical illness was most likely a combination of the psychological stress of fighting for so long and the adrenaline of taking on one of the toughest bosses in the game masking this stress. No one was sick before or during the fight, it wasn't until after they gave up that people started getting physically sick.

Though that doesn't really excuse SE for creating this broken monstrosity in the first place.

"Every once in a while, I used to consider going back to this game, but reading this pretty much confirmed for me that I don't ever want to do that. If that's the pinnacle of what I can achieve, I think I'll just spend my 28 hours in the real world instead."

I get tempted to buy it for 20 bucks for the forth time, but no. FUCK YOU SQUARE ENIX

Money says the trick to beating the boss is to name your character "M. Night Shymalan".

What a twist!

To do with what -PL Said "People tend to confuse difficulty with tedium when talking about FFXI."

People also mistake addiction with having fun. 99% of people that play mmos are just addicted to the game and the "competing with the Jones"and aren't having fun with the activities their doing in the game.

And now we have a definition for "hardcore" gamers:

Someone who thinks killing a chain of bosses to only might spawn a boss who will kick your ass after spawning other bosses as trash mobs over the course of 18 hours sounds fun.

Wow, never have I witnessed such a large group of people all collectively crying on all my years on these internets. The people of FFXI are not satisfied until every single boss fight is boiled down to 1 simple and safe strategy. In fact, most don't even try unless it's been "figured out". I have news for you...not everything is supposed to be easy. Yes, 18 hours is a RIDICULOUS amount of time to be doing ANYTHING nonstop, that's obvious. So ridiculous in fact, that I wonder if they were 100% serious when they said it. I doubt it. In any case, if you don't have the time, manpower or skill to beat a boss, just leave it alone. I cannot think of a reason as to why you would cry so much over a boss fight. Does it really matter that much to you that you cannot kill these bosses?

mr natural b hit it on the head. thats why i left FFXI. i would dread logging in because i felt like i was punching in to work.

@lightthrower

your friend is full of shit. i dont know if they are mixing up AV with something else, but some of the jailers (multiple of which lead to possibly popping AV) can take over 2hrs to clear out... let alone going through sea to get there and cleaning up after the retards that got aggro from everything in the zone.

I played this for a while because I usually like all things FF, but having played WOW after this, I truly disliked how for myself FFXI seemed too much like work. WOW eventually became the same and now I am MMO-less, for now.
