Final Fantasy X will be a 'remaster' and not a 'remake' photo

I hope you weren't expecting anything extra with the return of Final Fantasy X, announced at last year's Sony press conference at TGS. Square Enix's Shinji Hashimoto answered some fan questions at the Taipei Game Show and made it clear there that the upcoming Vita and PS3 re-release of this game would be a "remaster."

This means that we'll probably get a cleaned up, maybe up-rezzed version of the PS2 RPG, and not a total reworking. Sorry, no online Blitzball for you. I'd bet that the only benefit you'll get from this re-release is being able to see Nomura's batsh*t crazy designs in a higher resolution. Great.

According to GNN, Hashimoto noted that "the screen is much prettier than the original," whatever that means.

For me, a "remaster" absolutely fine, as this is one of my favorite Final Fantasy games. I just hope that it will be priced like a digital re-release.

Don't call it a remake: Final Fantasy X is a 'remaster,' to be clear [Joystiq]

Oh hey, a remastered version of the worst final fantasy game.

Cool?

I liked FFX quite a bit. It was something of the "start of the decline" of FF for me, but I still put a load of hours into it and enjoyed most of it.

I'm really excited to get this running on a Vita, personally. I'm all about it.

Yeah, I'll accept 'remaster', most companies (and people) are using the term 'remake' wrong for things like this.

@Taerdin

Hardly the worst, though not the best.

I really liked it too, one of my favourite FFs. Maybe compared to the other FFs it might not be as good, but as a stand alone RPG is pretty solid.

It would be nice if people did know the difference between a remaster and a remake, particularly given that we've mostly just seen remasters this generation and very, very few remakes.

In most cases with a last generation game, a remaster is all that's needed. Most of the best of last gen aged incredibly well. MGS3 especially, to the point it makes some current-gen games look like weak efforts.

I haven't played it but I can say it's the ugliest Final Fantasy.

Those characters. Hideous.

Yeah Jim, "Start of the decline" is probably the best way to describe it. Its a good game, and well worth the hours I put into it, and I'd play it again, specially on the Vita, but that doesn't stop it from being somewhere mid-way or later on my list of favorite FF games. Respectable, but not the top.

Agreed on the remaster comments, btw. I've been using "remaster" for all these "HD Remakes" lately, because that's exactly what they are.

Plus "remaster" sounds cooler.

It ranks somewhere in the middle for me, but fuck yeah remaster. Not to dredge this up again, but this is all they need to do for FFVII. Make it look better! Leave the rest of it alone.

I personally loved the remaster of FFIV for the DS. It was like playing it again for the first time and I smiled like a maniac to myself for a month while playing it on the train to work.

I think Square Enix may have found it's new calling.

Since the only thing they can seem to do right in games these days is graphics, they might as well "remaster" every FF game that was good.

Therefore taking the pressure of the studio to address that horrid "gameplay" aspect they hate so much.

Oh god, not this "decline" crap.

People started that shit back when FFVII dared to use polygons. Besides, FFXIII is the one everyone resoundingly agrees is shit because it was just bad all around. FFXIV was also undeniably rushed to market and suffered greatly for it.

But X, XI and XII - fuck off. Those were all good games. Perhaps not for everyone, but not bad at all.

Really? 'amazed at how people can HATE'? I didn't see any hate at all here. Just some people saying that it's not their favourite or for them personally it wasn't that good.

There's a big difference between that and hate. Please learn the difference.

X was the last great FF. Square needs to turn it around. But on topic--I wouldn't care if they barely changed anything, as long as I can play it on the go with a Vita. HELL YEAH PORTABLE FFX! I'd like to see this as the international version, also.

Unlikely to happen but would be quite nice if they did a remaster of IX (i.e. my favourite FF EVER), guess that'd be a long way off though :<

Yeah, I'm not sure I could ever play this game again. I put almost 200 hours into the first time, almost all of them at that monster battling place, and thats still fresh in my memory.

Other than that, the game felt like it was designed by a committee. Forget about all the things that were tangibly wrong with the game, it just lacked passion where it counted. It took everything that made FF IX such an amazing PSX swan song, and replaced those things with an emphasis on stunning visuals.

Honestly, its the gaming equivalent of Twilight. A poorly written senseless love story starring cardboard characters, wrapped in a facade of supernatural intrigue that is somehow more boring than real life in rural Kentucky.

While I am glad they wont be messing with the perfect battle system and story I will be upset if they pull a Resident Evil 4 HD and simply give me nothing more than what an emulator can provide.

New weapons, side missions, and maybe even summons sounds good to me.

'Start of the decline' is a good way to put it. I don't know why everyone was so surprised when XIII was a series of tubes. Maybe if the reception to XII wasn't so hostile we would have got a better, more wide-open game.

X was always one of my least favourite. I felt so cheated when I realised you couldn't fly around Spira with the airship :(

To me, I didn't enjoyed much of FF X. So the idea of a remaster isn't exactly appealing to me.
I would be much happier seeing FF VI, VII, VIII or IX being remade.

Not even for a second did I think this would be a complete remake but I still do wonder, is this a "remake"/"remaster" similar to Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary or just a simple HD remaster?

If it's the former with the extra international content, much better textures, etc. then awesome. If it's just, "Oh, we upscaled the resolution to 1080p and 60fps" then I ask, why not just release a friggin' HD collection instead?! What a waste.

The "decline" really started with VII. VII and VIII just devolved into a mess of melodramatics. IX was not much more than nostalgic wank. X delved back into the melodramatics that trapped VII and VIII.

XII was actually a really good game. It never made sense why people absolutely hated it. Some of the characters did leave something to be desired, but everything else was fine. I'd much rather see the series head in the direction of XII than any of the PSX FFs or X.

FF mostly suffers because it has, in the past, listened to a vocal minority rather than just genuine constructive criticism.

XIII-2 might be the turning point where they've started listening to the latter.

@Dr.Rocko - A remaster is essentially an enhanced port, the same game it was before with some better high-res textures and improved resolution to make things look better. Maybe throw in some new control options. That's it. Halo CE Anniversary or Ico/SotC would be this.

A remake entails rebuilding an old game with entirely new assets. Think the Resident Evil remake on GameCube or Tactics Ogre LUCT on PSP.

Remaster of a mediocre RPG huh? Good, they'd probably only fuck it up if they added content styled like recent offerings. I've said it before and I'll say it again, FFVI is the best in the series....FFVII was Square's greatest victory (in bringing JRPGs to the masses) but simultaneously killed classic FF.

@The Silent Protagonist - I know. My point is, why bother only remastering one game when Square could've easily released an HD collection with Final Fantasy X, X-2, and XII? That's my point.

Unless Square is doing a large overhaul of the graphics similar to Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, I just don't understand why they would only remaster one game. Seems like a missed opportunity considering how many people are demanding Final Fantasy XII HD as well.

Maybe I'm alone in that I just want a sensible, turn-based combat system for FF again. I'm not a big fan of the chaotic cluster**** in the last few games. My biggest complaint in XII was that I spent less time fighting the enemies and more time fighting with the gambit system to keep my party members from derping up constantly.

I'm fine with a simple remaster. I only played through the game once and that was way back in high school, so it'll be fun to play through again. Bring on XII next. As under-appreciated as it was, it had a fantastic setting and a mature, well constructed story that actually built a world that revolved around more than just your little band of characters. I loved the battle system, too.

Oh, and what happened to those portable remakes of V and IV SE was working on a couple of years ago? I'd pay absolutely stupid amounts of money for those.

I loved this game. While the voice-acting wasn't flawless, some actors did their job very well to be fair (auron).
The twisting plot was very engaging and really made you feel like a stranger in a strange land that tries to destroy you for cheating its "rules".
The world building was phenomenally well-done and puts FF13's encyclopedia of "telling but not showing" method to shame. Not to mention the art style was beautiful for Spira. I don't see why people complain about Nomura's characters (it's his STYLE) in this industry plagued with boring cloaks, knight armor, space suits and shaved heads.
The music was amazing, perhaps not as many quality tracks as previous FF games...but there were still more great themes than most soundtracks in games.
And the ending was something I'll definitely not forget, it was so well done.

Why is this suddenly a big deal? Isn't a remaster really what every single HD "remake" has been so far? A remake is something like the Gamecube version of Resident Evil 1, and remasters are the same game in a higher resolution. I'm okay with that, as PS2 games look so hideous as to be nigh unplayable in my HDTV, and I'm looking forward to finally playing several classics I missed out on the PS2 like Silent Hill, Jak and Dexter and Ico.

Now would Squenix please remake FF VI so I can finally see what the fuss is all about without having to deal with SNES graphics? Thank you!
