Final Fantasy VIII coming to US PSN photo

We already knew about Final Fantasy VIII on the Japanese PSN, but today we bring you word that the adventures of Squall and his improbably associated friends will be heading to the United States in the near future. The game has been confirmed for the US PSN store, and it will be coming "soon."

The news comes from Sony itself in an email to customers, where it was listed in the "coming soon" section. I think that pretty much seals the deal, right?

Final Fantasy VIII had a tough act to follow when it was first released, and has often been seen as a game in the shadow of FF VII. It's definitely among the most polarizing games of the series, with some fans loving it and others hating it. What side of the fence do you lie on? Did VIII impress you, or were you turned off by Squall's emo rambling and the infamous "Draw" system?

More importantly: Who's downloading this bitch?

Never played before, so I'm buying. I skipped over VII because I kept hearing that it wasn't that great (and I can't afford to spend lots of time on games that are so-so) but I'm gonna pick this and IX up when they come out.

I like what FF8 was trying to do over what it actually did. I never did beat it. I got to the end and just stopped playing.

The love story was a unique angle, but plopping it inside a large scaled war was generic.

Oh hell yeah! Downloading this ASAP =D.

This sort of implies (well, I hope) that FFIX will make it to PSN eventually too.

Which one should I get: VII or VIII?

I've never played either but want to try on of these old school Playstation FFs.

FFVIII is my favorite Final Fantasy. The combination of the level of technology, society and religion, and the characters and enemies all hit a nice resonance with eachother.

I've still got my copy of this, and it's on my PSP, so I don't think I'll be getting it on PS3; also, I thought the Draw system was pretty cool cos you can always steal magic from an enemy if you needed it and were in some far off place like the desert Prison where there weren't many items or cities around.

The first mission where you assault the island and that enormous mechanised scorpion tank thing chases you down the mountain was terrifying when I was younger, but it's still awesome to watch now.

You know, this is really weird to me right now. Last night I had a dream that Final Fantasy 8 was coming to PS3... and Sega Saturn. Like they were re-releasing the PSX FF8 on Saturn for some reason.

Sadly, when I first go this game in 2003, my idiot (then) friend scratched the first disc fatally when he borrowed it. I was at the end of the first disc, (play time was spilt between this and FF10, and just like that, the disc stopped working when he returned it to me.

I did enjoy the game and was glad the 3d graphics did manage to depict the in game characters much better then in FF7. Yes the graphics are dated, but it is clear that sqaresoft got a handle on the whole 3D business. Plus the CGI was revolutionary for a PS1 game at the time.

When it comes over to the EU (which might take a while, no biggie) I'll buy it then.

I bought VIII shortly after the release and never made it off the first disc. I didn't connect with the characters, the world, the plot, or the battle system - I loved Triple Triad though. I've always wanted to give it another go, and intend to when I finally finish VI this coming year. I probably won't download it though since I have my original copy. Money isn't plentiful enough at the moment to justify buying a game I already own.

VIII is more than a little broken. Spend a half hour exploiting the system before you leave for Timber and you can trivialise the entire game.

Also, remember the orphanage stuff. I don't see how anyone can defend a game with that in it.

@Electrium

FF9 will come to the store, square-enix wants money, sony wants money, and FF7, tactics and now this is on the store (or rather coming).

It will take some time (probably seven months) but FF9 will be on the store.

I can't be objective with this. VIII made me an RPG fan.
Also, WHAT ABOUT EUROPE?

VIII > VII.

Sure, the plot is even more ridiculous and illogical than VII's (which was pretty out there already), but Irvine makes up for everything bad about that game.

yeah, squall was pretty emo....but I loved exploiting that draw system by going to the islands closest to heaven and hell to stock up on auras and ultimas.

This FF suffers from some of the most pointless, time wasting game design I've ever seen in an RPG. The draw system forced the fights to be super easy so you can draw your 99 spells from each enemy, and then you were encouraged to link that magic to a stat. Then, because your spell stock didn't regenerate, you were effectively punished stat-wise for ever using magic wtf!

Say what you want about the story (I thought it was mediocre.), but the game system needed to be burned, buried in the desert, and then reburned.

I hate fucking Squall and it's not just because of his crying, but mostly because of how he looks, because of his ugly post-plastic surgery face with Michael Jackson's nose and lips filled with botox, arhg. Also I'm currently playing FFX and Tidus looks almost exactly like Squall at some angles.
And Cloud is the same, but I love FFVII more, because his face is censored with pixels at least. I'll probably buy it though.
I guess next on the list is FF IX, that'll be awesome.

I loved FFVIII -- the last boss battle was glorious.

I'm curious though, as a non-Playstation owner who's on the fence about getting a PSP for Christmas, would this and the PSN FFVII work on a PSP, or are they PS3 only? PSN makes little sense to me.

I was at a flea market recently and made my mom buy this for me for christmas. If this ends up being priced the same as FFVII for download, well, let's just say I didn't get a good deal at all.

I'm on the "loved it" fence. In fact, if it weren't for the marvel that is FF XIII, it'd be my favorite game in the franchise.

This is probably my least favorite FF. It wasn't so much a comparison against FFVIII that did that for me, though. I just didn't enjoy it as much. However, I was hoping to give it another play through just the other day. I wonder if time will give me a different perspective on it. Now that it's coming to PSN, I will gladly give it another go.

I encountered a pretty strange bug with this game, somewhere on the third disc.. Whenever I cast any lightning spells or summoned Quetzalcoatl, my game would freeze. It was bizarre and unfortunate, as it deterred me from finishing the game.

This Is why I love having a Japanese PSN account, to look at upcoming releases. I will definitely get this and give it another go. Xenogears is also on the Japanese Ps1 Classics list, I sure hope that will make its way back stateside.

Now there was a time sink game! Top notch though.

I will definitely be downloading it. I had it beforehand, I don't like it as much as the others in the series. I don't hate it, but I don't love it. That draw system is a bitch, but then again it can make the game overly easy. Just find an Ultima draw point... Game. Set. Match.
