We already knew about Final Fantasy VIII on the Japanese PSN, but today we bring you word that the adventures of Squall and his improbably associated friends will be heading to the United States in the near future. The game has been confirmed for the US PSN store, and it will be coming "soon."
The news comes from Sony itself in an email to customers, where it was listed in the "coming soon" section. I think that pretty much seals the deal, right?
Final Fantasy VIII had a tough act to follow when it was first released, and has often been seen as a game in the shadow of FF VII. It's definitely among the most polarizing games of the series, with some fans loving it and others hating it. What side of the fence do you lie on? Did VIII impress you, or were you turned off by Squall's emo rambling and the infamous "Draw" system?
More importantly: Who's downloading this bitch?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
The love story was a unique angle, but plopping it inside a large scaled war was generic.
but broken gameplay
the slot thing? sucked
This sort of implies (well, I hope) that FFIX will make it to PSN eventually too.
I've never played either but want to try on of these old school Playstation FFs.
I've still got my copy of this, and it's on my PSP, so I don't think I'll be getting it on PS3; also, I thought the Draw system was pretty cool cos you can always steal magic from an enemy if you needed it and were in some far off place like the desert Prison where there weren't many items or cities around.
The first mission where you assault the island and that enormous mechanised scorpion tank thing chases you down the mountain was terrifying when I was younger, but it's still awesome to watch now.
I did enjoy the game and was glad the 3d graphics did manage to depict the in game characters much better then in FF7. Yes the graphics are dated, but it is clear that sqaresoft got a handle on the whole 3D business. Plus the CGI was revolutionary for a PS1 game at the time.
When it comes over to the EU (which might take a while, no biggie) I'll buy it then.
Also, remember the orphanage stuff. I don't see how anyone can defend a game with that in it.
FF9 will come to the store, square-enix wants money, sony wants money, and FF7, tactics and now this is on the store (or rather coming).
It will take some time (probably seven months) but FF9 will be on the store.
Also, WHAT ABOUT EUROPE?
Sure, the plot is even more ridiculous and illogical than VII's (which was pretty out there already), but Irvine makes up for everything bad about that game.
Say what you want about the story (I thought it was mediocre.), but the game system needed to be burned, buried in the desert, and then reburned.
And Cloud is the same, but I love FFVII more, because his face is censored with pixels at least. I'll probably buy it though.
I guess next on the list is FF IX, that'll be awesome.
I'm curious though, as a non-Playstation owner who's on the fence about getting a PSP for Christmas, would this and the PSN FFVII work on a PSP, or are they PS3 only? PSN makes little sense to me.
@ mush
Just make a US account.
Now there was a time sink game! Top notch though.
I can't wait!
