Square Enix isn't working on an HD remake of Final Fantasy VII. At least, that's what the publisher keeps telling everybody, but nobody seems willing to believe it. Game producers Yoshinori Kitase and Motomu Toriyama have addressed the issue yet again, claiming this time that it would be an incredibly difficult and lengthy process to remake something like Final Fantasy VII.
"It is a result of considering HD graphics will be the mainstream. Considering the amount of work to make graphics that deserve HD, it is hard to make towns in the conventional style," explains Toriyama. "In the limited period of development time, to convey the the great story that deserves the name of Final Fantasy, and to convey the battles that entertain players enough, we condensed each element."
Kitase adds: "It is very hard to make games on PlayStation 3 in the same style as the games in that era had. Making graphics will take enormous time."
Personally, I hope Final Fantasy VII never gets remade. I still think the original is terrific, and I think Square Enix ruined it enough with its stream of sequels and prequels that bogged down the original story in anime bullsh*t and characters that were shoehorned in so roughly it's impossible to imagine them fitting with the original game's universe. I see no good coming from a remake.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Really? Because I always remembered it being a gaming blog. You want nothing but a steady stream of news, go to Kotaku.
The time spent remastering an old game would be better spent making a new one :).
No no, I think it was right the first time :-)
Then again, why does FFVII have to be such a dramatic overhaul? Have Sony and MS outlawed pre-rendered backgrounds or something? Why not just HD up the combat and cutscene side of the game and do the rest of it like the did it on PSX, just with prettier pre-renders.
Or worse yet, you see a whole entire party burst from Cloud's body.
Now imagine that in HD graphics. Yea, weird and scary.
It would certainly need consideration for the modern style of gaming, and I'm not even that excited about playing it again, but I still think that it deserves a remake just for artistic consistency within the game and allowing you to look at the game without your eyes bleeding.
And that's why, if a remake ever is made, the only thing it better change is the visuals... because the visuals are crap. They're so primitive looking. While the Final Fantasies that came before it have visuals that age like wine, FF7's visuals has aged like milk.
And seriously, stop remaking all the older Final Fantasies with N64-grade graphics. Maybe I'm crazy, but I much preferred the way FF3 looked on the NES as opposed to the DS.
My thoughts exactly. If ANY of the Final Fantasy games NEEDS to be remade, it's FF7. It's a freaking eye-sore.
FF7 is fine as is.

"early 3D on PS1 on top of horribly blurry prerendered backgrounds"
SD games are supposed to be played on SD sets, preferably cathode tube sets. upscaling also generally makes games look worse. even if they did release a remake with HD graphics, that game will also look like shit eventually (just like FFVII was the best-looking game ever when it came out, believe it or not). I've said this once, and I'll say it again: what's the point?
No you don't.
Also:
It's worse than that, he's dead, Jim, dead, Jim, dead, Jim;
it's worse than that, he's dead, Jim, dead, Jim, dead.
FFX anyone? But the part about Cloud's gang bursting out of his body=Nightmare fuel.....
Anyways,if Jim is saying the PC/PSP version of FFVII needs to stay intact, let it be.PS1's version of FFVII had those horrible puppet models, which seriously screwed my mind after FFVIII and FFIX.That needs a remake.
1/10
If I lived in that city I would merely move a few k's out and start a new leafy-green suburb.
Is that a good enough reason to remake it? I don't know.
I think Jim is at least partially right. Almost all the crap they inserted around the original sucks. Plus, there is a pretty good chance that SE would screw it up; decide to mess around with the game instead of just upgrade its graphics.
Either way, I'm not holding my breath for a remake.
But maybe it would be a good idea... for a portable console, really donīt expect it appears on a main console because it will be a waste of money, and itīs a part lame excuse and a good one, lame, because we know Squeenix, with the FF III and IV, they done a fine job (well... itīs actually Matrix but you see my point), and easily they can put in charge Matrix again in the remake or make themselves like ALL the friggin spinoffs, prequels and that shit...
The good reason is that most of the fans WANT it in PS3, and really, that would be harder and the game itīs short in some way (yes, even with the 3 discs thing), remaking it would be mean extending it and adding new graphics, which, it needs but heck, HD are not easy buisness, even for Square and itīs army of well-looking-boys...
So well, you can tell, I hate FFVII, but if they do it, they should make it decent enough
Because people don't judge games based on actual quality, they judge them based on nostalgia and how much influence they had, otherwise you wouldn't see SMB, OoT, and FFVII on everyone's "best games of all time" lists and such.
However, sprite-based games look beautiful all the time on my HDTV, provided I have a way of outputting it in 480p or higher. Their graphics age well. Even on an SDTV, Final Fantasy VII is horribly ugly. My PS3's upscaling just prevents it from looking even worse than it normally would be, since HDTVs don't handle 480i signals well.
The fact of the matter is, early 3D games - pretty much the entirety of the PS1 and plenty of the N64 catalogs (as well as Saturn 3D games) - just age horribly, regardless of what set you play them on. (The only reason I still like how Super Mario 64 and some N64 games look is because of the abstract, unrealistic nature of the whole thing - or nostalgia.) FFVIII and beyond at least worked out some of the kinks and had consistent art direction (my comment about the models), but FFVII is, visually, a mess. It has nothing to do with playing on an HDTV, it's just an ugly game. I predict 3D games from the era of PS2 onwards will age more gracefully, as they already have, though not quite as gracefully as sprite-based games.
I usually have a straight face when you respond to people who troll your topics, being all like "Why is he stooping to their level? That's not classy!"
Then I read your little gem: "I remember when Destructoid users didn't feel the need to be little bitches." - Jim Sterling
I retract my stance. I laughed pretty hard at that one.
I lul'd.
I agree 100% on 32-bit era graphics aging horribly (same thing holds for gameplay, IMO, in a lot of cases). One of the problems with FFVII is that it's polygon models over bitmap backdrops, so if you upscale you get sharper models (with little or no textures) over the same lo-res backdrops. Keeping everything lo-res makes it look MUCH better to me.
Personally I don't let it bother me too much. I enjoyed the game and the graphics back in the day, and I still enjoy it for what it is. It had its own style back then and I can still relate to that. The whole point of a remake is moot for me, because graphics will ALWAYS keep aging. I'd rather have new content.
I don't get it
Leave Final Fantasy alone.
Well, you can shit on X-2.
That's quite alright.
it'll never get remade...now FFVIII on the other hand needs to be remade as that story just fell apart
But so does GTAIV. So does Oblivion. So does Mass Effect. Its not something that just applies to FF so hearing devs say "its too hard" just makes me not want to play their games now. No ones telling them they have to have realistic environments. DQ8 was huge and was beautiful in looking hand drawn. The screenshots above of Terra? I could deal with a FF game that held to that look.
But a FF without towns? That's a bigger tunnel than FFX? God no. I'll wait for the price to drop or buy it used.
Me too, but after HEARING Terra/Tina in Dissadia, I wanted to kill myself. Way to rape one of my favorite characters in gaming with a horrible voice.
I want a FFVI remake.
You do? Really? When?
10/10 come back
