Final Fantasy VII still the most popular PSN game photo

Despite having a whole wad of brand new and original games all the time, such as Gran Turismo PSP or Critter Crunch, the PlayStation Network proves that nostalgia overcomes all, with Final Fantasy VII remaining the online service's most popular download in both the United States and Japan.

Here's the most recent North American sales chart, with FFVII sitting atop it like some mad old king:

1. Final Fantasy VII
2. Zombie Apocalypse
3. TMNT: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled
4. .deTuned
5. UNO
6. Gran Turismo PSP
7. Marvel Vs. Capcom 2
8. Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest For Booty
9. Critter Crunch
10. God of War: Chains of Olympus

Final Fantasy VII's performance is pretty impressive for a game released in 1997, and it's kind of amusing to note that the PSP and PS3, two systems sold on the strength of their graphical horsepower, are making loads of cash off an old and graphically dated RPG. Still, the PSPgo is pretty much the best PSOne I ever had, so I can totally understand it.

Well critter crunch made it in the top ten. So maybe their developer doesn't have to make Zombie games. NO more Zombie games damnit!

The staying power of FFVII is incredible. Also, Aeris dies.

God is there anyplace where they can put Uno up and it doesn't sell like crazy?

But FFVII doesn't surprise me. When I get a PS3 I plan on reminding myself what all the fuss is about.

@ Happy Chainsaw

A burn? I took it as a complement. A burn would be that his PSP Go is better used as a pepper weight or an object that clogs toilets. ITS A COMPLIMENT! Write this in the books sir, Jim (the xbot) Sterling complimented the PSP Go on one of its functions.

The U.S. store needs Xenogears or some version of Star Ocean 2.

I took it as saying that the Go was good for playing PS1 games and nothing else. Perhaps that's just my pessimistic nature shining through.

you ever heard that "vote with your money" crap? well, it appears that psn users have voted. looks like developers might just have to take a serious look at remaking the title. or find yet another way to milk this one game with spin-offs and movies and any other way they can get away with squeezing the last penny out of the game without actually making a remake.

Buy Critter Crunch.

Also, I don't know why everyone wants FFVIII so much compared to the other games that could be released. I really want Chrono Cross and Xenogears to be on the Playstation Store since they never originally game out in Europe.

final fantasy 7 was the shit, how many games could span across 3 discs and take up so much of your time? i have tried to go back and seriously play that game so many times and just cant get past the second disc. its just so long (thats what she said) and intensive and really shows that great story and gameplay can really make a game, who cares if your raytracing every drop of rain or hair and have physics and all that junk. if i can beat the game in a day or two then whats the purpose, thats the case with most of my games, i buy em, beat em and then they sit on my shelf collecting dust. the only reason i dont keep going back to ff7 is because if its length is so long it boundries over my lazieness and i dont want to get in too a three week marithon where im trying to beat it and i dont, thats how good the game is. period.

@EternalDeathSlayer: they've already made a movie and 2 games (besides FFVII) set in that universe. What more do you want?

I don't see the point in remaking FFVII. I mean, I do, but I guarantee you if they do remake it, they'll update it with a million different things (Advent Children visuals, voiceovers where there were none, etc.) and it would be one of the most polarizing games to ever come out.

This game is the most overrated game in the era, and maybe in video game history. It was a step ahead in graphics technology from the past games in the series, a step back on everything else.

It wasn't the best game of 1997, the best RPG of 1997, or even the best FF of 1997 (FF Tactics anyone). Hell, its not even the best RPG of September of 1997, that goes to Fallout.

A game fully deserving of it's success! (All you haters, stop whining and stick to FF6 if it's SOOO superior)

Fingers crossed for a remake.

... so the most appealing games on psn are old games, not new creative titles. no, just clinging on to old franchises.

from this data i doubt Braid or Castle Crashers will do well on psn and it's data like this that probably explains why such content is released last on psn - psn users are very strictly loyal to sony franchises and nothing else it seems

...I'm already sticking to FF6 since it's more superior. Shadow > Vincent, Locke > Cid, oh... and Mog, Gogo and Umaro > Everyone else in the FF7 cast.

PSN still doesn't have a very big library, the prices on games tend to be a bit on the high side for me, and for some insane reason they don't have demos up for all the games. So yeah no wonder an older very popular game that it's hard to get in disc form anymore is selling well..

FFVI is in IGNs Video Game Hall of Fame and FFVII isn't. Its eligible, but it hasn't been voted in.

Maybe because its overrated.

Even if it is also an old game, marvel VS Capcom 2 needs more attention. But so do CritterCrunch and Shatter.

I still haven't bothered getting FFVII even though it would be cool to play on PSP and my disc one on PS1 is scratched from playing it too much.

If FFVIII is released on PSN it will be a completely different story. Will play that game to death for the hundredth time.

Dear Square Enix,
Please just remake FF7 already. Really all you have to do is update the graphics. That's it. Not hard. Seriously, we'll all buy it. You'll make gazillions, fanboys (and most gamers) will cheer, and one of my best friends can then die happy. The End.
Love,
Many, many gamers.

P.S. It'll help save the PS3.
