Final Fantasy VII moves 100,000 on PlayStation Network photo

Not bad for a game that's over ten years old!

You-know-who is going to die about 100,000 more times in 2009 as gamers relive the classic spoiler, now on their PlayStation 3 and PSPs. Sony says that Square Enix's spiky-headed PlayStation role-playing masterpiece has been downloaded over 100k times in the first two weeks on the PlayStation Network.

Before year's end, Final Fantasy VII will be followed by Wild Arms 2, Mobile Light Force and Special Ops: Stealth Patrol, the latter two of which no one cares about. Let's get more RPGs, eh? How about some Suikoden action? Maybe Xenogears? Vagrant Story? Yes. We appreciate the release of FFVII, but what's the hold up, Sony? We've seen the Japanese offerings, so we know what's possible.

This is really refreshing to see. It proves that there is alot of money to be mad with re-releasing PS1 games. I wonder how MGS1 will do, I bought my copy.

DID YOU!?

Hang on, where the heck is that screenshot from? They didn't update the graphics for the PSN version, did they? I mean, aside from upscaling it to HD. The character models for Cloud and Barret in that screen are way more detailed than I remember them being.

The header image made me do a double take; did they remove the pop-eye models in this version? Have I been living under a rock?

Downloaded this at 11:30 pm last night, but I only got to play for about an hour, so I'm dying to get some more time with it tonight.

Definitely hoping to see other offerings, considering I still own the game on PSOne.

Is FF8 coming? I never finished it back in the day, mostly because I didn't like it, but I'd be willing to try it again possibly.

Seriously what version is that header imagine from?

For the people asking about the header image, that's from the PC version of the game, no doubt. People have made more updated character models you can download.

Honestly, I always thought the PC version was far better, anyway. But for $10, you can't beat the PSN download, especially to put it on your PSP.

Imagine how much a remake would make...
This, along with the refusal to release the FFXIII demo anywhere apart from on Japanese copies of the film, shows that money may be made from the franchise, but the potential is still there for so much more.

@EDS - I have FF8 for PSOne, wanna swap? Whatcha got?

@Dexter - sadly, no. The graphics are the exact same as the PSOne version.

@ Dale

did FFVII always look like that on PC or is it a modded version?
Aurain's Avatar - Comment posted on 06/23/2009 15:32
Aurain
That's a modded PC version of the game.
The PSN one looks like the FF7 you remember.
I have no idea why that Pic was chosen, especially as it's a mod.

@ PappaDukes: No, I'd rather not swap. I don't have much for the older consoles so I have nothing I'd want to part with. Besides this, I can actually buy the game on Amazon brand new for 17 bucks. I'd just rather download it and keep it on my PS3

Those look like their battle models. I imagine Cloud looks strange running around, they would have had to make new animations for running because they don't really take "steps" in battle, y'kno?

I bought this and MGS1. The option to play these PSOne games on PSP is the real deal maker here. Would like to see RE2 & 3, also Dino Crisis.

I'm torn on this. On one hand, it's cool that a game I worked on is still that loved over 10 years later.

One the other hand, I'm pretty sure this title from over 10 years ago pretty much outsold the title I just worked on, lifetime for all regions, and that was a new game.

playing on psp is a deal breaker. I can't stand RPGs nowadays unless I can easily turn off the system and come back where I left off

Syn: I did some effects programming on the PC version, and on the PS version, I was QA. The game I just worked on was Crimson Gem Saga. You can wade through my random posts to find some stories I wrote on that title.

So, this is awesome, I guess. I mean, in recent weeks we've had Resident Evil: DC, Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, and Final Fantasy: Tactics is coming down the pipe.

I have to wonder, really, what the hell DID take so long? Will we keep getting awesome games at this rate for a while? What's the deal?

While I'm eager to download this since I never played it before, I decided to hold out unitl I can play it on my PSP Go. Of course I'll probably get bored in the next few days and end up purchasing it.

@wutang

You know that when you turn off a psp it picks up exactly where the game was when you turn it back on right? Theoretically you could play through the entire game, turning it on and off, and never have to save. Of course if you die youre screwed though.

I ended up playing through FF7 about... 5 or 6 times. I decided I didn't care for the trek through Midgar to get to the real game about halfway through the second playthru.

Did you end up hating Midgar as much as I did or even more? =P

Square get lots of free money, Square put FFVIII on PSN, I give them lots of money to finally finish that game, and the cycle continues..

I cant wait 'til they get on that line of thought!

I've had the game in some form on my PSP for over a year now. Of course, I have to dick around with disc changing and that's not terribly fun, but it's still doable at least. *shrugs*

But man, I really need to dig up my PC version and get some rather nice models. Good lord.

I got one as well :-) I think its pretty cool that you can keep it on the ps3 and PSP at the same time with one buy :-)

And FINALLY we've got a use for "Remote Play" :-) I can't smoke inside because of my fiancee's asthma, but when I'm playing FFVII on PS", I can just save, switch to remote play and continu where I left off :p I just have it on the PSP for the lone moments where there is also no internet... It's kind of a mindfuck though to do 2 playthroughs of the same game at the same time, just with a delay of a few hours of playing... and slightly different stats...

It's my first time with the game too. Really sucks being 12 years late to a party. A party you've been told about so many god damned times nothing can really surprise you. Although, this might be for the best, as the you-know-who sequence happened to me while I was taking a shit in a public restroom. Had I broken down sobbing uncontrollably in the stall, it may have been slightly awkward for anyone else present.
