After fifteen billion years of nothing, Square Enix has seen fit to finally shed some light on Final Fantasy Versus XIII, the game Sony fans have been touting as the best game ever, simply because it's exclusive to the PS3. Seriously though, it seems like it will be better than Final Fantasy XIII, and here are some new details.
The big news, and most crucial to Final Fantasy fans, is that Versus will have a huge open field. According to Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura, the game's horizon goes "really far" and it'll take quite a bit of walking to reach the end. It will be populated by monsters, some of which may be random encounters, but Famitsu seems a bit sketchy on that point right now.
To accompany the scant details are some scans revealing gameplay screens. As always, Squenix is putting a huge amount of focus on graphics, with clouds that possess physics and significant draw distances. I just hope they don't put all their budget into masturbating over graphics as opposed to providing solid gameplay and narrative this time around. Fingers crossed!

My girlfriend stopped playing XIII altogether and she eagerly awaits this to come out.
Second, tell us %0.1 of the info that was released
Third, the usual rant

Fingers crossed, versus will ne the game that proves the xbox dragged 13 down.
I'd say 13 would have been far better had they not needed to take into account how shit the 360 is.
Jim haters, if you don't like these jurnalisums fuck off back to joystiq.
Which isn't a bad thing, mind you... it just stands in very stark contrast to the obnoxiously androgynous protagonist standing in the middle.
Jim compliments the game in paragraph one. He's also right: PS3 fans know absolutely nothing about the game, but claim it will be the best thing ever. It's like Xenoblade Wii fans when we knew nothing about the game.
@Mrandy
This is the first "Versus" basically. What Square is doing is essentially what they did with FF Tactics, FF XII, and Vagrant Story with the "Ivalice" universe. They're having Versus take place in the same universe as FFXIII and Agito XIII, but a different part of the world.
It's a win win strategy: if you hated FFXIII, you can at least say "I hope Versus will be good". If you loved XIII, you'll say "I can't wait to see what else this universe has in store for me!"
Also see The Elder Scrolls games.
But an open world always makes me tingly. At least, I'm hoping by that they mean something more in the scope of FFXII or Xenoblade and not a GTA game.
Because it's not FF 15 - think how FFX-2 was an "expansion" on X's universe. It's like that.

Now where was I? Ah yes, the game looks decent and it seems that they might be taking the criticism of XIII to heart.
I like Final Fantasy games.
OK train wreck is a bit harsh, but still that game just didn't have much going for it.
No, actually I'm interested.
Why this isn't just called FFXV is beyond me though. It seems silly. But whatever, I'm excited. Now I need a gameplay trailer! Or a demo!
"According to Square Enix, they all take place in the same world but in different time periods and there is no cooperation between the teams of the various titles, the only connection being a "vague crystal theme"
Anyways, I want this badly, and I also want Jim to review it.
I really do hope they work on gameplay and story and just not the graphics.
Gameplay>Graphics.
Another thing to point out, I hope this is a PS3 exclusive. I heard that FF XIII had a city removed because it wouldn't fit on 3 discs on the 360 so it also had to removed on PS3, which is ridiculous.
:(
Ah, thanks! I don't know why I thought there had been other Versus games already... I must have been thinking of Tactics or the others you mentioned.
It's true that all RPGs are linear to some extent, but even the dungeons are a basically straight line where you walk from one end to the other. The game also has no replayability. There's no character customization until ridiculously far into the game, and you can't even choose who is in your party until 20 hours in. This means that each playthrough is the same characters, going through the same hallway, fighting the same battles.
There's little in the way of towns, which means that even outside the hallway dungeons (if there even IS an outside), there's no real world to interact with.
The combat is mostly automated, as well. For the most part, it's just HIT HIT HIT, mash A to attack until you win. The "paradigm shift" mechanic had a lot of potential, allowing you to change the party dynamic on-the-fly, but then they made the rest of the combat so shallow.
You should look at the reviews that span a range of numbers to find out the reasons people like or dislike it.
