Shonen Jump is at it again. This time with info and images on a PSP remake of a game that some believe is better than sex, Final Fantasy Tactics. Not a direct port, the remake will feature at least one new job class, brand new illustrated full motion video, and will be presented in widescreen.
Originally released on the Playstation in 1997, Final Fantasy Tactics was a departure from the series, with its tactical roleplaying style, and a battle system that hadn't been previously seen in the franchise. The game spawned at least two spin-offs (Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for the GBA and Final Fantasy XII), giving cosplayers worldwide even more reasons to spend hours in their parents' basement constructing Dragoon costumes.
While many of you might be rolling your eyes at yet another remake or a port making its way to the PSP, many believe the original Final Fantasy Tactics to be perfect. Whether new cut scenes, widescreen support, and potentially long PSP load times will improve on the game remains to be seen.

[Update: 1up.com is reporting that the full title of the game will be Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War.
Additionally, Square Enix has announced another Tactics title called Final Fantasy Tactics A2: The Sealed Grimoire. While the platform for the game hasn't been announced, one can assume it's a sequel to Final Fantasy Advance (Get it? A2?) and will likely appear on a Nintendo handheld (hint: Japan sure does like the DS).
So I guess this means they aren't just making games for the DS.
Wonder what class they are adding...
You know, the first two times I played through Final Fantasy Tactics, I always thought, "This game could really use some ridiculously long load times."
Also after playing through it twice, I still don't understand the story.
they are adding the "Fanboi" class.
He can only use items/weapons manufactured in one town, and his "persuasion skill" makes other human characters commit suicide after he talks to them for six hours at length about technical specs and his stock portfolio.
in other news:
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO now I have to buy a fucking PSP
I have a PSP and I've always wanted to play Tactics, so this is simply orgasmic for me. However, with the PSOne emulator in place, and the possibility of Tactics being emulated, how viable is this remake both financially and... I guess, in a practical sense?
That pirate of the opera guy in a business costume is amazing
Niero, I was thinking the same thing. He must be some Jump mascot or something, because he appears quite often. If I ever get totally whacked out on mushrooms and decide it's a good idea to cosplay, I'm totally going to be that guy.
Alright, there is no possible way I can't buy that damn thing now. FFT is the best game of all time, no debate. (Although the plot is hilariously convoluted.) Oh well here's to another 200 hours of my life devoted to the gloriousness that is FFT. *raises pint*
I have FFTactics for the PSX. I'm looking at it right now. Excellent condition. Rarely played. I really didn't like the game. I found it confusing. I like FFTAdvanced, but the original...couldn't get into it.
W-wha? FFTAdvanced was an abomination.
yeah tactics advanced blew monkey chunks. and I should know, I logged over 100, soul-crushingly boring hours into it. get tactics ogre knights of lodis GBA that game is 1000X better. if you can find it.
Again, the stnadard PSP formula
1. Take a game that would benefit highly from stylus controls and a 2nd screen that doesn't have super high end graphics or huge amounts of cutscenes
2. Make the game for the PSP instead
3. ???
4. Be disappointed in lack of profit!!!
DAMMIT! PSP emulators? Where can I find them?
From a quick look over, there's some talk about the movie being cell shaded, along with there being two heroes in the story. So, this, Revenant Wings, and Ivalice Alliance are all parts of their 3 point project or whatever.
Okay, now I NEED to know what COSPLAY means. I keep hearing that word... I loved LOVED Vandal Hearts. It made me find/buy/play/love Vandal Hearts 2, Final Fantasy Tactics, ...Gladius...
Damn squareenix and there "we'll make some final fantasy games for nintendo and the better ones for Sony" tactic... seriosly, it's like ff tactics even NEEDS the higher graphic power of the PSP... it would be just fine on the much more popular DS... Final fantasy tactics was possibly the best game ever.
Luckily however... i have a copy for the psx, both it and my ps2 are in working condition, i don't give a damn about one new job class, and most of those cutscenes will wind up being avaible online anyway; thus leaving me STILL little to no reason to desire a PSP... This is much like when i heard they were coming out with disgaea for PSP, but i had that covered too
y'know i've actaully been thinking of playing it again... it's been quite a long time really...
Cosplay
I think I pissed myself
Thanks Nick. I need to add wikipedia to my repertoire of things-I-think-of-on-my-own.
Wow, another remake? I should be excited by all means, but somehow the words "Dragon Quest IX on DS!!!" keep ringing in my ears.
holy shit I totally forgot about gladius. I was mad far in that game, yo ::::goes to play gladius on the wii::::
kickass.
gladius portable? somebody hear my cries
wtf. i LOVE this game and ive always wanted a true sequel (not that FFT:A bullshit)... this would be friggin amazing if it werent on the damned psp.
new class, hopefully cleaned up dialogue and cutscenes; awesome. load times; gonna blow. man, im gonna have to buy a psp for this and that aggravates me. why not DS or ps2 or something? comeonnnnn.
btw, the new class looks to be fencer. dont quote me.
YES. YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES.
What I've read so far has suggested a class to be added will be the Onion Knight, or something of that accord. Also I read that Balthier will be a character involved. Along with potential multiplayer via that PSP's system. But this my just be idle gossip. Either way I'm stoked to see a good game getting a makeover instead of seven spinoffs and two movies. (While DECENT movies, worthless as stand alone films) I'm glad to hear about this and extremely excited nonetheless. Thank god Squarenix doesn't feel like leaving any of the older games die.
