Final Fantasy re-release still draws the crowds, and tattoos photo

As you may, or may have not of heard, June 26th was the day that Square Enix released the 20th anniversary edition of Final Fantasy I for the PSP. To commemorate the occasion, the fine folks at the PlayStation store, located in sunny San Francisco, hosted an event for the fans of the long running series.

The first one hundred people in line to buy the game were guaranteed an extra piece of swag along with their purchase, not to mention being part of the gazillion people to buy Final Fantasy I – again.

As always, Destructoid was there.

To be honest, the swag would hardly be considered worth the wait. A free t-shirt and your very own picture of yourself – in said t-shirt—could hardly be considered epic; that is, unless, you’re into the FF series as much as the folks pictured below.

FF Fans

From left to right, I hope, are: Will, Gavin, Randall, Ben, Wren, Tommy, and Eric (ignore the second afro kid and the guy to his right). This somewhat motley crew, had been waiting in line before there was even a line to speak of.

Arriving as early as midnight the previous evening, Tommy, Randall, and Wren had staked out their territory. But finding that they were the only ones in attendance, so far, they decided to take a nap in their vehicle, followed promptly by a nice meal at Denny’s – and lost their envious position as numero uno of the FF Brigade.

That ever-glorious position was now occupied by the likes of Will, Gavin, Ben, and Eric. Four gentlemen who had arrived on the scene at roughly 4:30 a.m., but, were still bright eyed and bushy-tailed (at 4 p.m.), when I asked them this question:

"What could make a man stay out all night, in the cold, surrounded by the denizens of the harsh streets of San Francisco, just to purchase another Final Fantasy game; a game that has been released, and re-released, many times over, on different systems, and available (emulation style!), on any PC?"

Because it’s Final Fantasy!!!

I can't say that I wasn't surprised by this answer. In fact, with the draw that this game still commands, I have a strong feeling that any offspring I may potentially have will be uttering these very same words when they ask me for their allowance. Which, of course, will be fine by me, as long as they're dressed in cosplay when they ask.

What is it with Squenix events? When I went to the official FFXII day in Times Square it was lame to the power of lamesauce. Poor cosplay kids woke up and put on their costumes for nothing but a limited edition FFXII temporary tattoo...

that's a pretty lame tattoo. He might as well just have got the word (tattoo) done instead.

Also, a long haired dude in a system of a down t-shirt? SOUNDS LIKE A HOPPIN' EVENT!!!!!!!

gg squeenix lrn 2 party

Damn you dvddesign! My clean slate of a mind is now forever tainted. And, yes, the event was hardly a party. But how many times can people buy this game, for real?

Seeing that kid in the SOAD shirt makes me wish I could go back in time and bitch-slap the shit out of myself at age 15.

SEnix needs to hire on a less awkward marketing arm, one with a budget, and one that's innovative. The least they could've done is paid to have some women willingly want to show up at the event.

Believe it or not, that song is the Theme song to Galaxy Express 999 in Italy.

a real FF fan would get anything drawn by Amano Tatooed on his back

I would take it in the ass from any man with this Tatooed on his back

The event was LAME. Went there and found out you needed to get tickets that they passed out 2 hours before the "event" started. Missed out on the tickets and couldn't get in. I saw the event by peeking through the windows and just saw people at the gaming stations and crowding the front counter. Nothing happened, it was just a game release gathering that showed nothing. I still can't believe that they actually limited the amount of people that could get in, I mean, I would think they would want as many people to purchase the game as possible. Squenix failed and Sony failed at this "event".

@ Rainbowblack: no shit. Too bad the art direction for the actual games hasn't followed that tradition. I mean, I can understand the 8 and 16 bit games looking blocky and pixelated so you had to just imagine the monsters and characters looking that badass. But, with all these remakes, _that's_ how I want my Final Fantasy's to look. Not that I'm not still excited about IV...

Fuck final fantasy until they (square-enix) can make a FF game that I care whether I finish it or not. I will admit that they make great games, but I've never been compelled to finish at least one FF game. The closest I've come is FFV and FFIX.

Y'know, all this talk about how FF sucks now gets me asking...

What would your ideal Final Fantasy game be?

What do you want to see in the FF series that'll make you want to play till the very end? All the other Squeenix haters I asked really couldn't answer.

If I was the sort of person who would do such a thing (and a woman), id work that line with a sign around my neck that said "loose your virginity, $20". Id probably make a grand just off the guys in the above picture.

If I was that sort of person.

How I weep for the future of humanity. 6000 years of culture and enlightenment end here.

HOLY CRAP I FEEL LIKE A CELEBRITY. Yeah, I will say I was slightly dissappointed by the whole thing. Especially since they kicked us out after like 45 min. And they did NOT give out goody bags for the first 100. I was fuggin number 2 and I got nothing of the sort. Oh? And Ritilin Twitch? Already have, no deal. Plus I got a gf. So does Ben, and Will dumped his a while ago. We're all cool...Don't know about Eric though...Or Randell...Whatever, I'm pictured, I'm happy.
