As someone with very little JRPG experience, I always thought there was something wrong with me for not "getting" the way SE does things; apparently I'm not as much of an idiot as I had assumed!
PS - Glad to see you still writing editorials on Dtoid. I was worried that with all your Gamefront, GamesRadar, et al work that you'd forgotten about little old us :)
I wish Capcom would stop jerking off and ruin Square-Enix's shit by releasing a heavily promoted, huge-budgeted Breath of Fire VI. But alas that'll never happen.
And I'm going to be different and say that FFX was my favorite.
I hope squenix starts to take the time to make unique games like those of old, and stop ruining my old favourites. Bastards.
But with new and better RPGs releasing, such as the always awesome Dragon Quest series, Arc Rise Fantasia, The Last Story, etc. It feels that Final Fantasy is like McDonalds now. Good if you haven't played it in a while, but excessively playing a new installment will be sickening.
Also, Tales>FF
FF9>all.
But I can't. Because you are right; every single word is true. And every time I see a new trailer, all I can do is shake my head in utter sadness and laugh at how utterly stupid it's all becoming.
Even things I disagree with you on are at least generally entertaining to watch/read, but this is just plain boring. I felt like I was reading GameFAQs forums for a minute there. You can do better than this, Jim.
when people say "the Japanese gaming industry is dying in a cesspool of regurgitation," my mind always drifts immediately to Square Enix.
Type - 0 : Summer 11.
They're oversaturated for sure, but don't evade facts in favour of sensationalism.
The best description of FFXIII was that every character was designed to be someone you could cosplay. And look at those kids in Type-0. That's *extremely* easy to cosplay, and they probably have a couple cool aesthetic things going on with them. That's what they're into. After FFXII failed miserably (in their eyes, not mine; it's one of my favorite games) they said, "Wait. We have six million fans, who will buy EVERY item we release. Who love them. Let's give them what they want. Let's appeal to female gamers who've only played Kingdom Hearts and seen Advent Children."
They'll never remake VII because it will break the mystique. Right now, new fans, if they decide to play VII, will like it because it's old. If they remade it, people would look at it and say, "This game's a bit boring." Not us, but the gothy nerd tweens who love Kingdom Hearts. They need to keep the mystique of VII to sell games. That's what these games are doing: catering to a retarded, mewling fan base, who buy their games unquestionably. That's the business model.
'As of 2010, fourteen games have been released as part of the main (numbered) series, and twenty-eight games in total, including spin-offs and sequels, have been released in the franchise. It currently ranks as the second-best selling RPG series ever, and the sixth-best selling video game series in the world. '
Note this number doesn't count ports, remakes, and...uh...whatever else that'd skew that. 28 seems awfully low, but what do I know? I just want another Einhander or Threads of Fate or other non-FF game they put out during the PS1 era. I'd ask for another Musashi, but they've...what have they done to him? Another World Ends With You is something I've seen a lot of people call for, but who knows if that'll ever happen.
@Niero:
Yeah, FF7r would potentially save the company, but the fervor of FF7 fans has died down a good bit, and the reason they say it'll take ten years to make is because they need that many years to connect all of the Compilation of FF7 plot to it. :P But no, I really think they will do it (eventually) but there's no way in hell it'll be a simple remake. They're going to have to foreshadow and callback and all this crap to events that didn't happen in the game. And then Japan will have a Final Mix edition with even more crap crammed into the game that the west gets screwed out of blah blah blah.
Nowadays, the excitement is gone. I still play them, but I rate them just as "good". God of War III had a much deeper impact on me than FF XIII. I only wish Square would treat her best franchise like Nintendo treats hers.
I miss you, Squaresoft.
Final Fantasy used to be the one of the most solid ties between the "East & West" markets. The franchise was living, breathing proof that game developers could bridge that gap without making compromises. How ironic that now the series is an example of the complete opposite; of how catering too much to one market can leave you stranded without a paddle in the other.
anyway, tight now i'm trying to play through FFX for the first time, and i'm already feeling quite bored. But it has it's moments, as does FFXII which i, strangely, like very much (despite "star wars ripoff" story). With FFXIII i wasn't interested from the first trailer. Not because of the setting, as you've also pointed out, but because of the feel of "i saw it before AND it's a bad thing". Sometimes "i saw it before" is an okay or even a good thing, but here it wasn't.
And now, with a shitload of games bearing FF name, i really can't care anymore. It seems, that Squenix don't even try to do what they did before - doing something familiar but in a new way. They pretend to, but it doesn't feel the same.
You know what though? If FFVI got the DS remake treatment like IV did, I would probably pre-order that shit, and I never pre-order games.
One of the things that keeps me from writing of the company all together are games like The World Ends with You. I want more games like that one. Pleeeeeaaase SquareEnix?
The only part of the Final Fantasy series I still care about is Final Fantasy Tactics. I enjoyed Tactics Advance and A-2. Squenix needs to either remake VII or make A-3. Then I'll care.
I also enjoyed XIII pretty well, and that seems to be the complete opposite of everyone I see here on the internet. Actually, I feel as if the internet is what makes seem so awful, more than they may be, for me at least.
I don't think it will even play the same as a remake. If it's just the same game with high resolution backgrounds and models (like several mods for FFVII on PC), then it's cool, but i don't think it will be popular enough, since you can buy a simple FFVII verion and a lot of people will whine about how it's the same.
And if you do it as more of a remake, updated to today standards - i don't think the game will be better with fully 3D locations, full Voice acting and other things people will ask for.
