Final Fantasy XIII has been a ridiculously long time coming and, as you might expect, Square Enix's marquis title has a huge burden of proof on its shoulders. With five years of hard work, time and money invested in this thing, the latest full chapter of the Final Fantasy series needs to seriously deliver.
"You're right there is an unusual sort of pressure on Final Fantasy XIII," states producer Yoshinori Kitase, speaking to EDGE. "I'd say we need this game to have ten times the success of these smaller titles."
"... I don't think that means we've compromised in terms of the game design or creativity in any way. Indeed, the development of the game has very much followed in the tradition of the previous titles in the series, welcoming input from the full range of development staff."
I wonder how many people on the dev team will be alcoholics before this one comes out.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
sorry i dont know where i was going with that.
I too will bust a nut over this game. I remember getting FF7 with my first Playstation, now i'm on the PS3 and haven't missed an installment. Even the PSP spinoffs.
Bring it Enix Bring it on.
Was 12 the one with Blitzball? - That was badass! Or was that 11.
I don't know....
I think there refering to the fact that their last 3 games (infinite undiscovery, last remnant, star ocean tlh ) all had mediocre sales at best ( were in the past square games would hit blockbuster status almost instantly).
I don't think they have anything to worry about with this though, there's a lot of anticipation for this game, and the only thing really up in the air right now is the quality of the 360 version, but considering how many people bought PS3's to play this ( when people thought it was exclusive) even if they fumble on the 360 version(I'm not saying they will please don't flame me) I doubt that it will have much of an impact in the grand scheme of things.
I just wish they would give us a release date already.
But TEN TIMES the success? I doubt it. We've entered a relative period of decline for both Japan's leadership position in development to the genre itself, and no doubt there are folks who will read:
"very much followed in the tradition of the previous titles in the series, welcoming input from the full range of development staff."
And groan "aww man another JRPG won't they die already" etc. etc. I loves 'me JRPGs, but the fact is that we're in a down period, and even FFXIII may not change that.

I don't know...."
10 had blitzball. 11 was an MMORPG. 12 was garbage.
...here's hoping it's not. And to enjoying it on my PS3. :)
I certainly recognize this. Halo is a good game that I don't enjoy. FF12 is a bad game.
I think he means smaller titles as in their other studios games (IU, LR etc) as this is their flagship game series.
Also Unangbangkay, square didn't nearly go under, their film division did but got bought over by Sony Pictures I believe. The two companies were seperate and Square pictures was a subsiduary, meaning that if it went down it wasnt taking Square with it. The Squenix merger was to capture the dragon quest series, which if they put the words "dragon quest" on a dog turd it would still sell through the roof.
Wasn't anything in that game that I didn't see coming in one way or another. 7 had some pretty crazy plot twists. 8 had a few as well and even 9 & 10. But 12s story stayed fairly similar all the way through.
If 13 can get back on track then I'm all for it. But till then I'll see how it goes.
I wonder if the quota will include Versus and Cunnilingus (or whatever the PSP game's called) and any other XIII-tagged stuff that's supposed to come out after the main event.
Square did nearly go under. The Spirits Within shit in their brekkie. Enix bought them out.
What does "Smaller Game" mean?
It's probably already 10x more successful than Valkyria Chronicles, But it's a "Bigger" game than Wii Fit, and it's fucked if they think they can get 10x more sales than that.
1 million? I don't see ff13 selling 10 million. Not even final fantasy 7 did that, even counting the extra editions they put out.*
*It came very close.
500k? I do see ff13 selling 5-6 million. That's how the last few have gone.
This stuff just reinforces that FF has basically committed financial suicide, despite arguably having the best brand in the jrpg space. The premiere, flagship JRPG may just barely turn a profit? There is something wrong with the development model here.
It seems like developers have been spending longer and longer times making rpg games. I mean it's taking 5 years or more to make FF13. Blizzard took 5 years to make World of Warcraft, an MMO!
And I agree with other fellow destructoid'ers who think FF12 is garbage. It really is. During most of the game, my only main feelings were "How does any of this concern Vahn and Penelo?" and "Why isn't the main character Ashe and the game restricted to 4 characters?". And above all, RPGs shouldn't consist of running around into enemies and letting the game's auto-battle system solve EVERYTHING. Especially when said RPGs take 80+ hours to complete...
Day 1 purchase... though im more digging the versus one im still interested in the main game.
This wasn't directed at me, but I'll respond anyway.
I think I feel particular hatred towards FF12 because I looked forward to it so much, pre-ordered the collector's edition, played through pretty much the entire thing.. and regretted absolutely every step of this process. If I cared less about it to begin with, I think I would've just shrugged off its awfulness and moved on, but all the hype, the rave reviews, the complete lack of criticism for it.. all got me so hyped and excited. This has had two effects on me: 1. It makes me want to warn anyone against getting too hyped about the 13th one (and other over-hyped games). 2. It makes me want to warn anyone away from getting FF12.
Granted, you have different tastes (*cough*freak*cough*), so you are entitled to your opinion. I'm still here to criticize it though, and I won't back down. I honestly think it was a bad game, and I don't think games should be made like it anymore. I'll fight for that.
Metacritic's review of FF12: 9.2
Average Gamefaq review: 7.47205
Sure, there is certainly some measuring error with Gamefaqs reviews, however there are 161 of these reviews. Yeah. 161 of them. I think that's gotta help with the measurement error. There might be a selection bias here (more negative feelings = more likely to review?), but I don't see how particularly positive reviews wouldn't also feel strongly inclined to talk about it. The "bias" captured here might also be capturing some of the game's quality. I also think the fact that Gamefaqs requires the posting of true, full reviews instead of short blurbs or just assigning numbers makes its dataset more valid than most "user ratings". Especially since the VAST VAST majority of the reviews were full-on reviews, rather than middle-of-the-ground or short reviews.
Essentially, I'm implying that FF12 was completely overrated by the gaming press. The gamefaqs community seems to agree.
Sadly. I feel the opposite you do.
I loved ff12. Loved the AI design, loved the way the game was setup, loved the story. Then again, I also liked 11, Thought 10 was shit, and thought 7 was mediocre
Sing Yuna SING!!
