Final Fantasy needs ten times the success of smaller games photo

Final Fantasy XIII has been a ridiculously long time coming and, as you might expect, Square Enix's marquis title has a huge burden of proof on its shoulders. With five years of hard work, time and money invested in this thing, the latest full chapter of the Final Fantasy series needs to seriously deliver.

"You're right there is an unusual sort of pressure on Final Fantasy XIII," states producer Yoshinori Kitase, speaking to EDGE. "I'd say we need this game to have ten times the success of these smaller titles."

"... I don't think that means we've compromised in terms of the game design or creativity in any way. Indeed, the development of the game has very much followed in the tradition of the previous titles in the series, welcoming input from the full range of development staff."

I wonder how many people on the dev team will be alcoholics before this one comes out.

Since for example The Last Remnant sold about half a million, I can see FFXIII selling more than 5 million copies.

I feel like I'm in a serious minority when I say FF never has, nor ever will interest me. Am I wrongness personified?

Damn that amount of time, thats like making an MMO. I'm guessing most of the work was a new engine. Hope it works out, be a hell of a thing to see SquareEnix go down.

If you make it, they will buy.

I too will bust a nut over this game. I remember getting FF7 with my first Playstation, now i'm on the PS3 and haven't missed an installment. Even the PSP spinoffs.

Bring it Enix Bring it on.

FF12 was so terrible. I want this to be good, but I can't imagine a scenario where I'll consider its "goodness" to be credible. All the press raved about FF12....

Wait, needs success? They can seriously sell a PS3 game that's nothing more than a picture of Cloud and the main theme of FF7 playing in the background, and it'll sell millions.

I enjoyed 12, the only one I felt was a little below par was 9.

Was 12 the one with Blitzball? - That was badass! Or was that 11.

I don't know....

I think there refering to the fact that their last 3 games (infinite undiscovery, last remnant, star ocean tlh ) all had mediocre sales at best ( were in the past square games would hit blockbuster status almost instantly).

I don't think they have anything to worry about with this though, there's a lot of anticipation for this game, and the only thing really up in the air right now is the quality of the 360 version, but considering how many people bought PS3's to play this ( when people thought it was exclusive) even if they fumble on the 360 version(I'm not saying they will please don't flame me) I doubt that it will have much of an impact in the grand scheme of things.

I just wish they would give us a release date already.

I'm just glad they're diversifying to the extent that they are. I remember when they had practically everything riding on the FF Movie and when it tanked, they nearly went under, eventually necessitating the Enix merger.

But TEN TIMES the success? I doubt it. We've entered a relative period of decline for both Japan's leadership position in development to the genre itself, and no doubt there are folks who will read:

"very much followed in the tradition of the previous titles in the series, welcoming input from the full range of development staff."

And groan "aww man another JRPG won't they die already" etc. etc. I loves 'me JRPGs, but the fact is that we're in a down period, and even FFXIII may not change that.

Well, I think the are pretty much locked in for millions of sales. Whether it's because they didn't have enough confidence in being console exclusive, or were just smart enough to realize they needed more money. Going multiplatform is going to pretty much guarantee millions of sales, if not just for the hype alone of having a final fantasy game on 360. Even if the game is shit.

...here's hoping it's not. And to enjoying it on my PS3. :)

I certainly recognize this. Halo is a good game that I don't enjoy. FF12 is a bad game.

Whats with all this 12 hate? Especially from people that played 9 and 10, they were both below par for me. I liked 12. This will sell millions guaranteed, its an FF game, the fan base of which consists of millions of gamers that will buy it day one, like me.

I think he means smaller titles as in their other studios games (IU, LR etc) as this is their flagship game series.

Also Unangbangkay, square didn't nearly go under, their film division did but got bought over by Sony Pictures I believe. The two companies were seperate and Square pictures was a subsiduary, meaning that if it went down it wasnt taking Square with it. The Squenix merger was to capture the dragon quest series, which if they put the words "dragon quest" on a dog turd it would still sell through the roof.

I just hope they changed the battle system they used in XII. After a while I just couldn't be bothered giving input when you could just line it up and...well let the game play itself really.

Everything just felt wrong with 12. The combat system annoyed the hell out of me and the story was just so dull compared to previous FF games.

Wasn't anything in that game that I didn't see coming in one way or another. 7 had some pretty crazy plot twists. 8 had a few as well and even 9 & 10. But 12s story stayed fairly similar all the way through.

If 13 can get back on track then I'm all for it. But till then I'll see how it goes.

Yeesh, I hope this doesn't end up being another Sonic X-Treme and leaving half the staff with a foot in the grave.

I wonder if the quota will include Versus and Cunnilingus (or whatever the PSP game's called) and any other XIII-tagged stuff that's supposed to come out after the main event.

Square did nearly go under. The Spirits Within shit in their brekkie. Enix bought them out.

What does "Smaller Game" mean?
It's probably already 10x more successful than Valkyria Chronicles, But it's a "Bigger" game than Wii Fit, and it's fucked if they think they can get 10x more sales than that.

What's success for a normal multiplatform game now?

1 million? I don't see ff13 selling 10 million. Not even final fantasy 7 did that, even counting the extra editions they put out.*

*It came very close.

500k? I do see ff13 selling 5-6 million. That's how the last few have gone.

This stuff just reinforces that FF has basically committed financial suicide, despite arguably having the best brand in the jrpg space. The premiere, flagship JRPG may just barely turn a profit? There is something wrong with the development model here.

Ten times the success of smaller games? What does that mean? Do they have to sell ten million to break even? 50 million?? How much exactly

It seems like developers have been spending longer and longer times making rpg games. I mean it's taking 5 years or more to make FF13. Blizzard took 5 years to make World of Warcraft, an MMO!

In my humble opinion, you can't really appreciate Final Fantasy 9 unless you've grown with and played through FF 1 to 6; Sakaguchi himself stated that the 9th was his personal favorite, and was meant to be a retrospective on the old school ones. Zidane is a cheerful main character as opposed to the introspective ones in 7 & 8, that sudden change alone with the general lighter mood of the game might explain that it did not mean fan expectations. I could defend FF9 all night long, but I'll just conclude that great fantasy stories do not have to be serious or photo realistic...

And I agree with other fellow destructoid'ers who think FF12 is garbage. It really is. During most of the game, my only main feelings were "How does any of this concern Vahn and Penelo?" and "Why isn't the main character Ashe and the game restricted to 4 characters?". And above all, RPGs shouldn't consist of running around into enemies and letting the game's auto-battle system solve EVERYTHING. Especially when said RPGs take 80+ hours to complete...

"Piellar: And I and other fellow Destructoiders disagree and think that FF12 is a good game. It's just all a matter of opinions and tastes, not facts.'

This wasn't directed at me, but I'll respond anyway.

I think I feel particular hatred towards FF12 because I looked forward to it so much, pre-ordered the collector's edition, played through pretty much the entire thing.. and regretted absolutely every step of this process. If I cared less about it to begin with, I think I would've just shrugged off its awfulness and moved on, but all the hype, the rave reviews, the complete lack of criticism for it.. all got me so hyped and excited. This has had two effects on me: 1. It makes me want to warn anyone against getting too hyped about the 13th one (and other over-hyped games). 2. It makes me want to warn anyone away from getting FF12.

Granted, you have different tastes (*cough*freak*cough*), so you are entitled to your opinion. I'm still here to criticize it though, and I won't back down. I honestly think it was a bad game, and I don't think games should be made like it anymore. I'll fight for that.

I just did a quick comparison.

Metacritic's review of FF12: 9.2
Average Gamefaq review: 7.47205

Sure, there is certainly some measuring error with Gamefaqs reviews, however there are 161 of these reviews. Yeah. 161 of them. I think that's gotta help with the measurement error. There might be a selection bias here (more negative feelings = more likely to review?), but I don't see how particularly positive reviews wouldn't also feel strongly inclined to talk about it. The "bias" captured here might also be capturing some of the game's quality. I also think the fact that Gamefaqs requires the posting of true, full reviews instead of short blurbs or just assigning numbers makes its dataset more valid than most "user ratings". Especially since the VAST VAST majority of the reviews were full-on reviews, rather than middle-of-the-ground or short reviews.

Essentially, I'm implying that FF12 was completely overrated by the gaming press. The gamefaqs community seems to agree.
