Final Fantasy IV, the Chinese Famicom demake

The world of Chinese bootleg software is a fascinating one. Sometimes, these wares go beyond mere copies to exhibit a healthy amount of sheer effort. You are no doubt aware of the Famicom demake of Final Fantasy VII, which translates the story of the PS1 classic into 8-bits, yes? Siliconera recently got its hands on a Final Fantasy IV Famicom demake, and my goodness, is it even more impressive!

Though the Chinese FFVII omitted a large number of elements from the original, FFIV sticks far closer to the source, right down to the music. But what makes this demake so unique is that it has been split across multiple carts: Dark, Light, and Final. Since the Famicom is incapable of transferring save data, each cart serves as its own standalone title, with a brief recap of events and party members at a reasonable enough level at the start of each.

Never mind the out-of-place character art on the title screens and packaging cribbed from an assortment of other Final Fantasy adventures. This looks like a bang-up production that I wouldn't mind checking out myself -- if an English version were to materialize, that is. For more gameplay clips, check out the Siliconera link below.

Want to watch 35 minutes of gameplay from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt?

With gamescom now behind us, you'd figure that CD Projekt RED would keep a tight lid on all things related to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. But apparently not, as it would seem. A week after the show, the developers decided to un...more

Check out new direct-feed Bloodborne gameplay

Last week, I got to go hands-on with Bloodborne. This visually evocative and bleak follow-up to Dark Souls II is a change of pace, but also something that feels and plays very much like the games of the past. While the change...more

Review: Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment

Despite how you may feel about the polarizing second arc of Sword Art Online, fans generally have nothing but good things to say about the first arc. It managed to nail a lot of aspects of MMO culture, along with marrying the...more
