Final Fantasy IV remake for DS gets new system photo

It seems that a graphical overhaul isn't the only thing that Final Fantasy IV's DS remake is getting. Next in line for the Square-Enix Self-Whoring Parade, Final Fantasy IV will actually get a brand new system feature to go along with the pretty graphics. If you remember, FFIV granted each member of your party his or her own unique ability. For instance, pre-Paladin Cecil had a special attack called Dark Wave, while Palam and Porom used Twin Magic. When various characters left your party, they ended up taking their abilities to the metaphorical grave with them. Now, however, you will be able to inherit the skills of departing party members, meaning that finally, after all these years, Cecil will be able to learn Sing, just like we always wanted.

While some people are making a big deal out of this, I don't see the new feature as any kind of real problem. Some fans complain that it waters down the characters and takes away their individuality, but if this is limited to the inheritance of skills that are no longer being used, and doesn't mean you can just mix and match everything in the game, I fail to see how this stops party members playing differently. The main characters will all retain their individual abilities and I doubt we'll have instances where Rosa can suddenly use black magic or anything approaching the Materia system. Cool your jets, purists. Until we see more than this Jump magazine scan, I say we take the new feature for what it is and not cry doom and misery just yet.

They had me when that announced it was going to include the "lost" parts of the original story and now, they are just piling on more reasons for me to buy it.

Those abilities have always been pretty worthless anyway.

I'm all for more Rydia, both in adult and loli versions.

How about a remake of FF6? I would eat that up in a second.

What do they mean by "depart"? Can you use "Twin Magic" after the twins *depart*? Because that would make their *departure* a little less painful. Chad! I think they're trying to ruin one of your moments!

Meh, I probably won't be using that aspect, I'm more excited about teh lost parts.

Hopefully it has something to do with Rydia having to strip to make it through summoning school.

Why does this matter? Just because the feature is there, doesn't mean you have to use it. If you want "pure" gameplay, just don't ever use this system.

I've never seen someone get mad over a developer actually adding something to a remake. Jesus.

IMHO, this is a case of some spilt milk. If you want the abilities to be unique to the characters, then only use them with that character.

If you want "pure" gameplay, play the original game. I have been looking forward to this for a while. I heard that they had to cut out three-fourths of the game's story when it was first being made . I would like to see what they put back in and I wonder if we can call this a remake or something else.

Maybe we can get Cid to cast Meteo! No? "Cid can't use magic," you say? Fine. Whatever.

@Robert: you must have only played the snes version. It's on the gba version and ps version.

Robert was playing FF2. Har har.

Anyway, "metaphorical grave," indeed. I swear, practically none of the dead characters stayed dead. It really dilutes the impact of having them die.

I don't care, FF4 is still (Chad voice) AMAZING! I'll be buying it.

Well that explains Rydia and Rosa casting twin magic in the scans. I could take it either way. It doesn't really sound like something that will ruin the game experience, so it shouldn't matter
