Final Fantasy IV DS US release date confirmed! photo
Well, it was inevitable that Final Fantasy IV DS would see a stateside release, but it's still nice to hear date and details officially confirmed by Square. We can now mark our calendars for July 22nd, although there was no mention of Japanese voice option (I'm guessing there won't be one) or episodes of Final Fantasy IV: The After. Although I have to admit curiosity about the latter, I'm happy enough to see the game itself, which looks like a solid remake.

A  few small changes have been made from the Japanese version to the US that we currently are aware of. The ability switching system that was known as Decant will be known as the Augment system in the US version. Also, Rydia has a summon that you can play through as a little mini-game called Pochika, but this also gets renamed stateside as Whytkin. Just some little here and theres, although if you can read Japanese and did a side by side comparison I'm sure there would be many more to be found.

To hype yourself up until April (as if you needed any help), go back and check out secret superstar Dale North's hands-on of the Japanese version way back from last year's Tokyo Game Show.

I just want to be able to play a 16-bit FF game on a console without having to deal with PS1 load times

Square Enix: while AMAZING and awesome, this news does not put you off the hook. Put the old games on the Virtual Console!

Oh god I must buy this.

@welkstar, I totally agree. I am not sure what Square Enix is thinking. I mean, they could release FF4 on both Virtual Console and the DS and I am sure there would be enough fans that would buy both.

Great news. I was dbeating on whether or not I should open my copy I had for the GBA. But since I have FF6 and 3 to finish I have been holding off. SO I might just wait for the DS game now.

I will buy this day one.

That said: I'd kill for Japanese voice and English subtitles and an unlockable version of the original SNES game. That game is tiny in size and would satisfy the old-school, pixel-love in me.

Alright! Let's overpay for a game we all played almost 15 years ago!

I'll buy it when it's $20 or less.

i love remakes when they are close to the original with some positive tweaks. I love the art and find it funny that they are wearing form fitting suits instead of armor, but whatevs!

Cecil. Kain. I too have my Red Wings.

This'll be the first Squeenix game I get for the full $40. 'Twas my third RPG, and my second Final Fantasy, and I still have a soft spot in my heart for it. Hopefully this face-lift will let me re-live the old days.

And like I said in another article, considering what a great job Square-Enix did with Dragon Quest VIII and Final Fantasy XII's English voice casts, I'm not worried at all for what they'll put together for FF IV.

This is definitely a must purchase, but right now I'm more interested in "The After." I wish they would make it into a full-fledged game on the DS, instead of doing the Japanese cell phone thing.

I can't wait for this. According to Takashi Tokita (creator/re-creator) this will be the hardest iteration of FFIV yet.

Colette, I bought the latest Nintendo Power just because of the FFIV feature and I read through the interview. One thing Nintendo Power asked about was FFIV the After and whether or not we'd ever see it in America. They said that if there was interest, they'd bring it. Nintendo suggested porting it to the DS. I would be all over that if they ported all the episodes into one DS cart. I think we need to harass Square Enix to make that happen!

I'd definitely march behind that banner. I was starting to get worried that we weren't going to see FFIV's remake because of all the voice acting.

It'd be cool if it did have the Japanese voice option, but I suppose the cart is already tight for space.
