Final Fantasy IV DS bosses are nasty little buggers photo

[Warning: This post has spoilers in it, if you're one of those whiny types]

Just when you think you know a game, it smacks you in the face with something out of left field. While some purists bitch and moan about changes, Square Enix nevertheless has chosen to update more than just the graphics in its upcoming Final Fantasy IV remake for the Nintendo DS.

Our pal Spencer over at Siliconera has warned gamers that the bosses in FF IV will fight back in ways you may not be expecting if you're intimate with the original game. Their strategies have been shaken up a little, and they put up far stiffer resistance than before.

For example, the Antlion no longer just counters physical attacks, but magical ones too. If his eyes are glowing red, then he will be able to counter the Chocobo summon. Rather than just relying on that, you now have to swap out your attacks in order to win the fight. Cagnazzo retains his classic strategy, but this time his Tsunami attack is embellished with a potential instant death effect. Add in his Sleepel spell and a Hold counter, and you've got yourself one challenging globule of damp evil.

If you're a fan of grinding, then it seems like FF IV DS was made for you. If you're a fan of grinding your teeth, well this remake is going to be everything you need to reduce those molars to stress-induced powder.

This is one of the things that demotivates me from certain RPG's...

Some developers do it right, and make the game balanced and progressive. But some - namely Final Fantasy III - you're having a blast killing monsters with ease, then all of the sudden when you're least expecting it, you're fighting this beast who can kill your entire party with one spell!
And forget about trying to revive that healer, because the boss will kill him right after he comes back to life!
So all of the sudden you're in grind hell, forcing you to spend hours getting higher levels just so you can fucking survive!

It is definitely much harder. I got the game a week after it was released and I still haven't finished it... currently at the Sealed Cave, don't want to think about the boss there (^^;;

Don't let the difficulty discourage y'all from getting it, though, it's still plenty good :)

If you like the original ones 1-6 then yes its very good, I think I put about 40+ hours into in. Old school turn based.

If you never played the original FF3 (the jappo NES one) then FF3 is definitely worth getting on DS. Way ahead of its time on the NES, and still one of the better RPG's on the DS (in my opinion). Definitely worth 20 bucks if you enjoy older FF games.

FF3 on the DS is a really good game if you like old school RPGs. You'll need to grind, it's not even an option. Personally I grew up on these games so I like them alot but I like games like Lost Odyssey that needs you to think for every encounter not just bosses. I can't wait for FF4 DS, FF2(us) was my first RPG and I still love it a lot.

Eh no offense to Dyson, but we really need to just make one standard numbering system. Just call it 4 and move on.

But yeah they always said only about a quarter of the original script made it into the game in the end. I wonder how much actually got put back. The director said it was a bit of a blessing as it left them with a sleeker, faster paced script but can't help but wonder what got cut originally.

As for FF3 DS, eh I'd played the fan translation NOT ROM and it's friggin amazing. The DS one, I don't know, it felt sort of missing something despite all that was added. I can't really put my finger on it

I wonder if this is just the Japanese version, which was significantly more difficult than the American one.

Antlion looks awesome! Can't wait.

Some added toughness (especially early in the game) won't be such a bad thing. But some of the bosses were already tough to begin with - i.e., the battle with the 4 elementals. As long as it's not like FF3 DS where you can go from full health to dead in 1.5 turns, and the outcome of the battle is highly dependent on the sequence of attacks the bosses just happen to use.

FF3 sucked shit.

But a version of FF4 that might actually be mildly difficult? My interest in this game just rose a few points. I MIGHT actually pay the ludicrous $40 for it.

Maybe.

Probably not.

Bloody hell! I've been assuming they're using the Japanese version which is hard enough....

FF3 is from the vein of games long gone where you traverse hours into a dungeon, only to find that you are insufficiently equipped to fight the said boss, sending you hours back outside where you must attempt it again (not to be confused with Roguelikes). Get it if you're the self-loathing type.

Also Zeromus from the OG FF4 was hard as balls. I can't even fathom how much harder they can make that fight...

If they upped the difficulty, then they'd better have fixed the sham of experience you get while trying to level-grind. It takes for-fuckin'-ever to gain a single level in FF IV, even when you're under L10.

Oh boy, I can't wait to see how fast the baddies off you in the Sealed Cave. Nightmares of the Trap Doors shall be coming back...and that GODDAMN Demon Wall.

Final Fantasy III on the DS was not that good. It had 3D graphics......whoopdy-fuckin' doo. Too bad you have to spend a good chunk of time without a save point from the Crystal Tower to the boss, with approximately nine-thousand bosses in between you and her which you have to fight if you want Ribbons for your party...which you almost have to get considering the final bosses affinity for fucking you over with status effects.

I wonder if the FFIV DS title has the secret ruins tower thingamabob that was in the FFIV GBA remake? If so, that will probably be harder than hell.

Also, are there CG scenes aplenty? Or is it like FFIII where there's one decent CG scene in the opening credits, and then in-game engine shit for the rest. Although I just bashed graphics above, I do like watching beautifully rendered cutscenes.

@ Poopface Morty: From what I read in Nintendo Power, the game is like FF III and has a huge cutscene in the beginning. Sadly. =(

This good news all over the place, since I for one was very dissapointed in the level of difficulty the FF1 remake had, man that was fucking easy compared to the original.

I actually anticipate this more than I do FFXIII. Hopefully with this version I'll make it past that 3/4 way choke point I hit the last 3 times I got the game.

Awesome! I think thats great. Tough RPG bosses are fantastic! I always loved the epic half hour battles with blaring intense music as you fish through your inventory for that last "save your ass" potion you swore you wouldn't use unless direly needed. This is a good thing.

I wanted FF3 for Christmas 'cause I thought it had online play with anyone, but in reality, you have to have friends registered in your friend list, and I didn't want to fool with Friend Codes. I agree with ProjectExodus: it seemed really easy at first, but then there were monsters that completely obliterated me, and that turned me off from the game, and I haven't played it since.

Bah, I welcome a challenge. Kudos to Square Enix for making a game hard instead of holding our hand.

@Zodd the Immortal

Don't say stuff like that, the idea of a SoM I could carry on my DS, play with two other friends (!!!), that's just too much for my heart to bear.

re: FFIV: I don't mind grinding so much in DS games because often I'm in a situation where I can play, but I can't pay lots of attention/have sound, because stuff is going on around me. I don't want to waste my cool scenes in such a distracting place, so I just wander around, kill some monsters, etc. Very relaxing. I only had to over-grind and waste time once, but that was because I am a giant idiot.

FF3 on Famicom is easily the better version. 9 enemy maximum instead of the 4 or 6 on the DS version among other things made it a far worse game overall.

To those who brought up Secret of Mana, all I have to say is Sword of Mana. *shudder*
