Just when you think you know a game, it smacks you in the face with something out of left field. While some purists bitch and moan about changes, Square Enix nevertheless has chosen to update more than just the graphics in its upcoming Final Fantasy IV remake for the Nintendo DS.
Our pal Spencer over at Siliconera has warned gamers that the bosses in FF IV will fight back in ways you may not be expecting if you're intimate with the original game. Their strategies have been shaken up a little, and they put up far stiffer resistance than before.
For example, the Antlion no longer just counters physical attacks, but magical ones too. If his eyes are glowing red, then he will be able to counter the Chocobo summon. Rather than just relying on that, you now have to swap out your attacks in order to win the fight. Cagnazzo retains his classic strategy, but this time his Tsunami attack is embellished with a potential instant death effect. Add in his Sleepel spell and a Hold counter, and you've got yourself one challenging globule of damp evil.
If you're a fan of grinding, then it seems like FF IV DS was made for you. If you're a fan of grinding your teeth, well this remake is going to be everything you need to reduce those molars to stress-induced powder.

Some developers do it right, and make the game balanced and progressive. But some - namely Final Fantasy III - you're having a blast killing monsters with ease, then all of the sudden when you're least expecting it, you're fighting this beast who can kill your entire party with one spell!
And forget about trying to revive that healer, because the boss will kill him right after he comes back to life!
So all of the sudden you're in grind hell, forcing you to spend hours getting higher levels just so you can fucking survive!
Don't let the difficulty discourage y'all from getting it, though, it's still plenty good :)
If you like the original ones 1-6 then yes its very good, I think I put about 40+ hours into in. Old school turn based.
But yeah they always said only about a quarter of the original script made it into the game in the end. I wonder how much actually got put back. The director said it was a bit of a blessing as it left them with a sleeker, faster paced script but can't help but wonder what got cut originally.
As for FF3 DS, eh I'd played the fan translation NOT ROM and it's friggin amazing. The DS one, I don't know, it felt sort of missing something despite all that was added. I can't really put my finger on it
Some added toughness (especially early in the game) won't be such a bad thing. But some of the bosses were already tough to begin with - i.e., the battle with the 4 elementals. As long as it's not like FF3 DS where you can go from full health to dead in 1.5 turns, and the outcome of the battle is highly dependent on the sequence of attacks the bosses just happen to use.
But a version of FF4 that might actually be mildly difficult? My interest in this game just rose a few points. I MIGHT actually pay the ludicrous $40 for it.
Maybe.
Probably not.
Also Zeromus from the OG FF4 was hard as balls. I can't even fathom how much harder they can make that fight...
Final Fantasy III on the DS was not that good. It had 3D graphics......whoopdy-fuckin' doo. Too bad you have to spend a good chunk of time without a save point from the Crystal Tower to the boss, with approximately nine-thousand bosses in between you and her which you have to fight if you want Ribbons for your party...which you almost have to get considering the final bosses affinity for fucking you over with status effects.
I wonder if the FFIV DS title has the secret ruins tower thingamabob that was in the FFIV GBA remake? If so, that will probably be harder than hell.
Also, are there CG scenes aplenty? Or is it like FFIII where there's one decent CG scene in the opening credits, and then in-game engine shit for the rest. Although I just bashed graphics above, I do like watching beautifully rendered cutscenes.
That sucks. I'll save my money then.
FUCK THOSE TRAP DOORS!!!! There goes my sleep for tonight...
...And somehow I don't regret that at all.
Don't say stuff like that, the idea of a SoM I could carry on my DS, play with two other friends (!!!), that's just too much for my heart to bear.
re: FFIV: I don't mind grinding so much in DS games because often I'm in a situation where I can play, but I can't pay lots of attention/have sound, because stuff is going on around me. I don't want to waste my cool scenes in such a distracting place, so I just wander around, kill some monsters, etc. Very relaxing. I only had to over-grind and waste time once, but that was because I am a giant idiot.
To those who brought up Secret of Mana, all I have to say is Sword of Mana. *shudder*
