We knew it was only a matter of time, and now it's finally here. Well, kinda. Final Fantasy proper, on the iPhone. A full-fledged RPG in your pocket. And no, Vay did not count.
Wow, it looks really great! A new Square Enix trailer shows the game in action, with upgraded graphics and all. I'd love to see someone playing this to know how it works, though. I see bigger menus for touch action. That's good to know. And at around :50 in the video you can see the fancy looking virtual d-pad that you'll presumably be controlling your movement with.
This is a Japanese release, of course. The video says that both Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II are coming to the App Store soon.

Looks exactly same as the PSP games, although I personally think it's probably one 'remake' too far. Square, if you're going to make remakes for very old games, make it full-3D like you have with FFIII and FFIV on the DS.
Final Fantasy I&II were released for the GBA (which can still be played on most DS systems) and the PSP. How exactly is this release taking anything away from other handhelds?
I know everyone's all nostalgia'n for the sprite graphics and such, but I really do wish they were DS/n64 style updates. I love me some FF III and VI DS.
They're not really upgraded graphics. It's a slightly lower resolution port of the 20th anniversary edition. Speaking of which, I wonder if those are ever going to show up on PSN.
It's still kind of amazing to me that the relatively-slim little IPhone can have more processing power than the NES. The game looks very shiny, and considering that I haven't played I or II yet, I'll probably end up buying this when it comes out. :D
Why not put FFXIII on the iphone/PSP too? You could do so with absolutely no compromise to the gameplay, just scale down the pre-rendered nonsense to the appropriate resolution and your set!
Vay was an awesome game, terribly underrated. I didn't even know there was an iPhone "port" until this article referenced it. After seeing what they've done to the battle sequences and menu system, I really wish I had remained ignorant.
You know, for a rerelease that I've already bought who knows how many times, I'm actually looking forward to this. Really dig the theme in the trailer too.

They seem to be reusing the sprites from Dawn of Souls, but I don't recognize that scene at :44.
I did too. The iphone version sucks, though
You obviously haven't played Zenonia for iPhone if you think it has no good RPG's.
Zenonia, Inotia, Inotia 2, Rogue Touch: they're all good, and off the top of my head.

Bigger, higher res display, likely cheaper price, on a device that's always with you.
Plus, this is a turn-based RPG. If there's one type of game that doesn't need physical buttons, it's turn-based RPGs.
Also - too many ports of FFI / FFII!
