Final Fantasy Dissidia announced for PSP photo

You might recall an ominous mentioning that a new Final Fantasy title would be announced at Square-Enix Party 2007, and lo, it did come to pass. Witness the first image -- the logo, ooh! -- of Final Fantasy Dissidia, or Dissidia: Final Fantasy, or Dissidia Final Fantasy Without That Colon In There.

We don't know much, and it's likely that more information will be spilled in a matter of hours, but here's the from-the-hip evaluation: this new Final Fantasy will be appearing on the PSP. Those figures featured in the standard Amano logo seem to resemble Shiva and Ifrit, er, maybe. They could just be... you know, folks. Folks with horns and flowy blue dresses. As you might imagine, it's mostly conjecture at this point.

The official Web site doesn't tell us much either, but it does include the following mysterious rumblings: "Fantasy is endless ... Fantasy has no limited form ... information revealed at Square-Enix Party 2007." From there it launches into the logo. Like I said, not much information.

Something to consider, however: given the somewhat enigmatic phrasing on the Web site and Final Fantasy's 20th anniversary, could this be a remake? A spin-off of one of the earlier titles in the series? A really gnarly Barret dating sim? Well, as soon as we're told, we'll let you know.

uhoh. "fantasy has no limitless form." that makes it sound like its not going to be a classic final fantasy game.

Answer me this: why does this need to be a Final Fantasy game? Why not just make a new IP for once (ignoring that one new IP they just announced)? All they're doing is diluting the brand name. Unless this is a remake/direct sequel, there's no need for the FF name. And if this is a remake/direct sequel, it doesn't need to be made.

"Fantasy is endless"
So, uh, not Final? Or is this bizarro world where up is down, light is dark, and crystals are flan?

It looks more like Gilgamesh to me.

And I loved the series but they just aren't trying anymore. I haven't played a single one after X. XII looks pretty good but I don't know...I just don't get that love for the series that I once did. Time to go replay part VI...

@Necros
I wish SE would just stop whoring the FF name but why do that when adding Final Fantasy to a title makes them so much more money?

I lost faith in SE a long time ago.

Necros is correct, as is twesterm's reasoning why that won't happen.

why not a final fantasy game? each one is a variation on the same theme but the game play gets tweaked here and there but the characters are different. and really, isn't that the whole point of a RPG - to get involved with the characters? and anyways, it's just a fucking game from a company that's been shitting out games under the same umbrella title for well over a decade. no one bitched and moaned when part 3 - 7 came out, "oh another final fantasy game, huh?" you guys bitch and moan about the dumbest things when really, how is this not unexpected? you get pretty graphics, an engaging storyline when your cynical ass is pacified, some interesting game play, and it gives you some fun when you let it.

For some reason, I'm thinking it's a monster battle game but with summoned creatures.

Would certainly explain the logo.

I'm with realyst on this one. Either its a monster battle game, or what I was thinking was that it could be an RPG set in the world that summons come from. But that's me...

""Fantasy is endless ... Fantasy has no limited form..."

Translation: We're going to milk and whore out the final fantasy franchise until we lose our large hardcore audience and then find another. Expect another 3 FF7 spin-offs too AND a remake.

Doesn't mean it can't be a place, Wheeliedude. Much like Ivalice.

Besides, in video games - things don't necissarily HAVE to make sense.

But really guys. I have my own ideas on RPG's and a great deal of other games. If you guys have some great ideas to change it up - perhaps you should write in suggestions? No info is out on this and already the naysayers run out there....

Sounds to me like Square isn't the only one that's out there feeding off of the name only. You guys saw the name and decided to just bash it because of it. Two opposite ends of the stick, yet both holding their own ends of the same root issue.

If Square wasn't making RPG's, I would be bored to hell. I don't know about the rest of you, but I just don't want to wait 5 to 7 years for a decent RPG to come out every single time. At least with the Final Fantasy games, I can rest assured that I will at least see SOMETHING interesting that is, in the very least, a tolerable decent RPG...

I'm almost certain this is going to be a beat-em-up.

Saw the screens and it looks like Zidane is fighting a summon or something maybe? there appears to be health bars too so it would also indicat its a fighting game.. :)

It is a fighting game, kinda like SSB, but with FF characters. The two in the logo are Chas(remeber him?) and Cosmos, goddess of light(possibly the goddess whose statue revives characters in FF2j, but mer conjecture.)The basic storyline is that they are in a constant war, so Cosmos has summoned 10 warriors to fight Chaos' forces. So far, characters have gone hand in hand, Zidane and kuja(NB-Badguys do not count towards the 10 i mentioned before), Warrior of Light from FF1 and Garland(wields what looks like a buster sword). The only other character that has been announced is Sephiroth, so i'm gueesing that either Cloud or Aerith will also be appearing. I've also heard something about Cecil Harvey and Kain Highwind, but not seen anything to utterly convince me.
