Final Fantasy band nixes name in fear of Square banhammer photo

If you've ever listened to the Arcade Fire, Beirut, Stars, or any number of alternative Canadian bands, you've heard Final Fantasy's work. At least, you heard what used to be Final Fantasy: violinist, composer, and indie-pop übermensch Owen Pallett has officially dropped the Final Fantasy moniker in preparation for his new album, Heartland.

"I began playing solo violin shows in 2004," explains Pallett. "Although it was essentially a solo project, I named the band Final Fantasy, as the experience—and the tone of the material—was reminiscent of the hours and hours I had spent as an adolescent playing those epic JRPGs."

If you listen closely, it's easy to tell that Pallett's music has been influenced by videogames: "An Arrow in the Side of Final Fantasy" from the album Has a Good Home uses the melody from Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins, and He Poos Clouds features a song called "Many Lives —> 49 MP."

Pallett's new album, Hearland, will be released next year, and it's the first of his albums to be released in Japan. Given that Square Enix doesn't really play nice with its intellectual property, it seems like Pallett might have just dodged a bullet. Remember when they shut down that Chrono Trigger fan game called Crimson Echoes? What about when they nixed Chrono Resurrection? "I feel it is in my own best interests to definitively distinguish my music from Square Enix's games," Pallett wrote in an e-mail statement.

Smart move, friend.

I've seen Final Fantasy in concert three times (most recently a few weeks ago in Nashville), and someone always asks him what his favorite Final Fantasy game is. He's never answered. Now, like the number of licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, the world may never know.

The amount of licks it takes to get the center of tootsie pop is subjective because everybody produces a different amount of saliva per lick, has different tongue lengths and may lick for different durations

Square's mother was very interested in this information last night.

Yay. This guy's like my favorite homosexual Canadian indie artist. But seriously.. you guys (if a genre called 'chamber pop' interests you) should definitely give him a listen. "Adventure.exe" is definitely a song every gamer should hear.

I've been listening to Heartland lately, and it's a lovely album. I think it's a fair tragedy that he had to lose the moniker, but, honestly, he has sort of reached the point where he would gain the attention of SE. Makes sense, but makes me sad too.

It's not coming out until next year. Is it on the torrents?! I'll definately go out and buy it when it comes out, but if it's on the torrents, please do tell.

@ Robotic: I'm on more than videogame PR lists :)

There are two very big fans of Pallett on Destructoid, and I bet you can suspect who they are. We've been in contact with his reps, so maybe we can see something more on the site?

You should definitely leak it... to me. I kid, but that would be completely awesome if you got Owen to do something on the 'Toid.

Between Owen Pallet and Arcade Fire, next year's going to be a great one for music.

Is this the same Final Fantasy that made an album called "He Poos Clouds"? Because they suck major ass.

I saw him in Orlando last month, it sucked because he was supposed to be opening for The Mountain Goats but John Darnielle got sick last minute and cancelled both shows in central Florida. Owen Pallett still went on though and it was great.

Yes, if you were to actually read you article that you commented on you would see that it is the same Final Fantasy.

Dude, soooo weird. I was just listening to The CN Tower Belongs To The Dead as I saw this article.

I don't think Squeenix would have done anything though, Owen has been around for quite a while using that name, you'd think they would have said something by now.

Huh. I didn't even realize there was a band connected to Arcade Fire called Final Fantasy until a few days ago. Weird.

You'd be amazed at all of the projects connected to Arcade Fire. Owen in was one of their touring violinists during their Funeral tour. He also composes all of the orchestral arrangements for them.

Another great band/guy connected to Arcade Fire is Beirut. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMMjEOY3VGk

Sad, I've always enjoyed his music, and its sad to see that something he obviously enjoyed so much as a kid could end up potentially causing him that much grief as an adult.

Wow, I really owe Destructoid an apology. I would have never guessed Final Fantasy would have been known by anybody here.. let alone read an article about him. Nice.

Also, it probably is in his best interest, thus this is probably a very good move.

I was at that Tennessee show too. Great show. Owen is extremely talented and I'm just glad that he is continuing to make music. Sad that it had to come to this. But, it's wise considering what could have come from not changing the name and releasing the CD in Japan. A surprisingly mature move in an age of music where copyright is largely ignored.
