Final Fantasy Anniversary trailer; this is progress?

     Does it suck?

Watch the above video.

No, really. Go ahead, I can wait.

Ok, done? Impressed? Neither was I. I watched the entire thing and all I was thinking the whole time was "Wow, the DS runs circles around this thing." Sure, we all know the PSP has all kinds of horsepower and that when properly utilized it makes the DS look like a kid's toy, but comparing this to the stunning work Squenix did on the remake of Final Fantasy 3 is like comparing Uri Geller to Jesus. Yes, they both have magical powers, but one can barely bend spoons, and the other turns water into orgasms on a daily basis.

I realize I'm going to get a ton of comments from people telling me I just "don't get it" or that "2D is the new 3D", but the reality is that this compilation is just a cash-in for the publishers. That wouldn't be so unfortunate if ninety percent of the PSP's library wasn't already cash-ins, but, as it stands, this title will only end up appealing to those who love the series enough to own one of the other eighty iterations of these two games, and it certainly doesn't provide a compelling argument for adoption of the PSP.

I sat there waiting for the game to become 3-D.

As far as I know, this PSP FFI isn't a remake, it's a port of the GBA "Dawn of Souls" version, which had extra content compared to the PS1 "Origins" version (minus the CG cutscenes), which was a console port (with CG cutscenes) of the WonderSwan Color remake. The only bonus of the PSP version is that it restores the CG cutscenes from the PS1 "Origins" version, which weren't that great to begin with and can easily be viewed on YouTube.

(The above paragraph can be reused for the PSP port of FFII coming out after FFI simply by adding an extra "I" in the first sentence.)

That being said, I refuse to buy a copy of FFI until SquareEnix decides it's made the final version of the game and puts it up on Virtual Console. And they had better not dare to put up the ancient NES version on the Virtual Console, unless it comes with the updated version for free.

I will not buy it... I must force myself not to buy it...

but I hope they put it out on DS because they dont deserve my money for a re-re-re-remake and then I wont feel bad about downloading it :D

meh, Square's still feeling the sting of Spirits Within, so anything that is risky gets thrown on the ways side, specifically the Chrono series.

If you really want this game -- go with the Dawn of Souls version. It has extra content, and you get FFII along with it. Unless you already have a PSP and just really want it, or something.

This release isn't about the better graphics or a remake, though. It's clearly about the original game that thousands of people fell in love with as kids. Personally, I don't want those games touched up in any way.

FFI could stay as is, but FFII has aged really badly, IMO. That one needed a remake. The Origins version is meh, but I haven't tried out the Dawn of Souls one.

Apparently people are missing this: the Origins, Dawn of Souls, and PSP versions of FFI (and also FFII) are nearly identical, and are already updated remakes of the original games ported to the Wonderswan Color. Don't expect Dawn of Souls to wow you over the Origins version, and set your expectations similarly for the PSP version. Dawn of Souls and the PSP version have a little extra content, but otherwise, it's still the same game.

Say what you will about the whoremanship of the Final Fantasy series... but at least the games are GOOD for the most part.

Unlike other beloved franchises. (cough sonic cough)

And I really didn't like the 3-D in FFIII that much.

Jaggies killed it for me.

While I prefer 2D RPGs to 3D ones, Square should be ashamed of themselves.

A word to Square: Stop whoring out your Final Fantasy series. It's no longer final, nor is it a fantasy, anymore; It's more of a rehashed sci-fi action narrative of angst. Now look at your Enix side -- they haven't whored out Dragon Quest, yet. It's not even on its ninth game, yet. And there's only a few spinoffs. You're not going to see Dragon Quest versus IX, Dragon Quest Haeresis IX, Dragon Quest Agito IX, or even Dragon Quest this-naming-scheme-doesn't-make-sense IX. You're going to see ONE Dragon Quest IX. And it's going to be a FANTASY, and you're not going to have to listen to the main character's angst as he points out all of his subtle thoughts to the stupid people playing the game.

Now go make a good game for the first time in a decade.

I like how they make remakes of their crappy old Final Fantasys but fail to do anything with their big hits. I mean if they were remaking the chrono series or I don't know Final Fantasy 6 oh or even 8 or 9 to go on the portable of today I think we can all agree that might be worth forking over some cash.
