Fils-Aime talks community, says Nintendo has a 'vision' photo

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently told Forbes that Nintendo is set to deliver community “in a way that’s unique to Nintendo.” This is extremely different than the company’s previous stance, which was (and still is) an attempt to put up a massive wall in front of every aspect that could be construed as online gaming.

From the interview:

Nintendo has always had a vision on community. The issue is that we define community differently than our competitors...Our consumers do want a sense of community, and we're going to deliver that -- but in a way that's unique to Nintendo.
I’ll take that Nintendo needs to approach community differently, but I find the lack of definition of community a bit disturbing. Is he simply referring to universal matchmaking and lobbies, prizes and calendar events? Or is he referring to enhanced forums and chat rooms to discuss games and trade those disastrous 12-digit Friend’s codes? Somehow I think this will only result in another channel.

* After more than a year my Wii have 3 or 4 friends. My PS3 have 21 after 3 months. Reggie can talk about changes, but don´t have the power to change. Nintendo development is with japanese Nintendo team. And friend codes are the worst online use I had see. Playing online with Wii is like playing with a bunch of anonymous robots, because you never know who are online.

The Wii online sucks. I mean, it may as well not exist at all. Meanwhile, on my PC, I have steam, with a large friendlist. And I have my PS3, which I've owned half as long as my Wii, and yet I have around 40 friends on it. Of course, LBP is responsible for around half of those friends, but hey, that's just how it works. If you dig adventuring with someone on LBP, most likely you're going to add them. It just takes one really good social game to make that friendslist jump.

I want nintendo to have a good community, but I feel so burned by their tiresome approach that even thinking about it annoys me. It's kinda like the whole storage issue. I don't care what they say, the fridge idea is stupid. The answer is right there, Nintendo, and yet you just sit there. I don't get it.

Fils Aime: "And by unique to Nintendo, we mean it will be the cheapest, lamest looking thing we can conjure up. We'll slap Mario on it in some way shape or form, and people will drink it like mothers milk. We'll totally miss what core gamers enjoy, but casual folks will love it for 5 minutes and never play it again."

I suppose its a step in the right direction, as you're currently not even allowed to exchange friendcodes in the official Nintendo forums. At least you couldnt in the Norwegian one (wich Nintendo of Europe shut down a while ago).

Fils-Aime: "Yes, can I help you?"
Creditor: "I'm here to collect on a loan you took out for school."
Fils-Aime: "Well, I define money differently than the bank."
Creditor: "Umm... yeah... I still need $50,000."
Fils-Aime: "Ok, let me see. Here is 2859-3856-2784-2853. That should do it."
Creditor: "What was that?"
Fils-Aime: "It's better than your bank's money. It's MY personal money. It's more secure because you have to remember 16 digits to give it to anyone. That way only people you REALLY want to give it to can have it."
Creditor: "..."

This will likely result in 4 packs of multi-colored wrist straps. You know, so your community of old folks can waggle in STYLE.
