Fils-Aime restates Wii's general purpose; do you want your Nintendo back? photo

Speaking with CNet, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime further clarifies the company line that has been pushed by Nintendo since the announcement and launch of their "new generation" console, the Wii. We all know it by heart now: The Wii is a casual system meant to have the ability to appeal to the masses, not just Nintendo's or the video game market's core audience. Here's a bit of the philosophy Fils-Aime says is behind the Wii:

... First, how do you satisfy the core while still expanding appeal? And second, how do you leverage your strengths against entirely untapped audiences--to the so-called "blue oceans" in popular marketing speak?

The answer by Fils-Aime and Nintendo?

Provide a new product that actually underperforms on an established industry metric for "progress," and substitute an alternative that typically is smaller, less expensive and easier to use.

And the result is:

It is purposely so simple and intuitive that anyone in a household can use it. It also incorporates functions like a photo browser, an Internet browser, and custom news and weather channels, which lead some people to wonder what these elements have to do with video games.

In all honesty, this begs the question: Do you want your old Nintendo back? Do you want that company that provided the best gameplay experiences with the best technology they could give at the time? Quite simply, is Nintendo alienating their core audience with the Wii?

I like Nintendo, I like having my Wii. I look forward to them getting past all their mothballed GameCube games, so we can get onto some Wii developed games.

I think everything I've seen from Super Mario Galaxy is decent proof that the Wii is going to be just fine in the visuals department.

And so long as they keep the VC service running, you will never ever ever hear me disparaging the Wii. Unless they fuck up and never put Mega Man or Bionic Commando on the VC. Then heads will roll and blood will fall from the sky.

I liked the GameCube. I'd say the main problem with it is that it just didn't have the games or online ability that could have maybe pushed it over the top.

Honestly, the PS2 killed it because it had better games overall. Right?

I don't know, Summa. I agree with you about the online thing. That did hurt it with some people, but regarding the games, the Gamecube had a plentiful supply of decent games. It just didn't have Pro Evo or GTA. Nor did it have the marketin the PS2 had, which is the biggest factor.

Oh crap, now I see where this post was coming, All Nintendo fanboys will come and say, "Nintendo is perfect as it is", although they would obviously buy the Wii 2 the second it hits shelves and buy one as a spare too, while anyone with a less fanboyee mentality, will obviously say "of course!"

Nice work summa!

Developers dont care that much for the Wii and are focusing their efforts on next gen consoels , go to www.gamasutra.com and check on that please. So what you get is exactly what you have now, lots of consoles, no games, since only Nintendo is making worthwhile games for it (and not all of them, mind you) is exactly what happened with the gamecube

Also every Analysts and their pets, predict the PS3 is going to be the winner in the next gen race by 2009, maybe even before since the price drop is coming earlier than expected. (blu ray price has already dropped)

Well I am not saying Wii is going to be the winner..just saying that I have have heard a lot of developers buzzing about the Wii and working on games.

And I believe we have covered the intial "launch a system, wait awhile for the games to come on" shock that has even plagued the 360, PS3 and PS2.

Hasn't it been discovered that analysts are pointless and can't always be trusted ? I mean the price drop issue, has there been any confirmation?

61 replies can't be wrong.

I have to agree with some of the sentiment here about the Wii. I've spent way more time this generation with my DS than my Wii. I still very much like my Wii though. I'm not tired of Wii Sports, I haven't finished Zelda or Monkey Ball, and I'm looking forward to playing Paper Mario and Excite Truck.

I love the eye candy, but if a game is fun I will play it. Like DvDesign, I'm hoping Nintendo gets rid of their back catalogue of Gamecube games and starts working on Wii games. With tweaking Wii games could be very pretty and hopefully would come with good gameplay and controls.

I'm worried about a lot of 3rd party developers getting on board and producing cheap crap and decreasing the perceived value of the Wii further.

Two things I wish Nintendo would do the with the Wii. Get the online play going for Wii games and the VC, and lower VC prices or increase VC game value (new modes/graphics/online play).

I'm selfish. I want Nintendo to appeal to me. I want them to live and breath for me and me alone. Although to be fair what they are doing now is pretty much doing that.
Game droughts? From what I can see they are lasting long enough for me to finish Uni, then, as a UK citizen, I'll get Paper Mario followed shortly by Galaxy.
Lack of HD? Perfect! I can't afford it for a few years anyway. By the time the next console s released maybe I'll actually have an HD TV.
Shorter Games? Fantastic! I no longer have the ability to play games for hours upon hours in the day. School was a long time ago.
So the way I see it Nintendo ARE appealing to me. Although I wouldn't mind a 360...

True. But you can't deny they are alienating a substantial group of gamers by not having a robust online system and "next-gen" features (high-end graphx and sound).

I'm just asking if you guys think the sacrifice is worth it, in the long run.

No you can't, and it is alienating a lot of so-called 'hardcore' gamers. But in the long run I think they will do okay out of it. So what I'm saying is 'Yes' the sacrifice is worth it...

The Wii has certainly alienated me from wanting one. It's a combination of the laggy motion-controls, weak graphics, and poor software (outside of kiddy platformers which really don't do anything for me anymore).

That being said, I'm glad it exists because it's recruiting gamers. I just hope Sony and MS don't switch gears due to the Wii's success.

28% sounded a bit high to me even. I have an HD set, but it only does 480i and 1080i. It's an old CRT set with component in. Even still, I'm not sure I care to get a new set that does 1080p/720p until they come down in price and increase in quality. Say 4 years or so.

By then Wii 2 will be out with PS3 graphics, improved Wii controls and Super HDMI 5.0 output to my brand new Sorny 2160p SHDTV/wall.

I don't need online to enjoy a damn game. I didn't it 15yrs ago... don't need it now. And like I said before... graphic whores witht he cash to dish out for an all out HD experience can go right ahead. The Wii is perfect for me.. as is the 360. The game can fit to anyone if their willing to except the fact that it's a different experience all together and not a killer app every damn game.

Give it time and watch Ninteno sort out the small nooks and crannies.

What makes the Wii not "next-gen"?

Cause it doesnt have 720p/1080i/1080p graphics?
Cause it doesnt have a 20-120GB Harddrive?
Cause it doesnt have the processing power to do medical lab work?

And you can say there are GameCube games blah blah blah...

But wait, when the 360 came out it had games like King Kong and Gun (especially this one) that were direct ports from the XBox game! So in the beginning there will be some ports.
Not to mention even the Spiderman 3 game supposedly was and looked horrible on ALL systems but the DS. (8.1?)

So many people think next-gen means graphical upgrade.

"Do you want your old Nintendo back? Do you want that company that provided the best gameplay experiences with the best technology they could give at the time? Quite simply, is Nintendo alienating their core audience with the Wii? "

What?

Old Nintendo?

Best Technology?

What Nintendo is this you speak of? Is it the Nintendo of the N64 that gave us the best, most high-tech cartridge technology or the Nintendo of the Gamecube that gave us the best Online technology? Maybe it was the NIntendo of the gameboy that gave us superb and realistic graphics on a handheld!? HA!

Are you crazy? (don't bother, I know the answer) We finally GOT the old nintendo back! With N64 and cube, Nintendo stupidly listened to gamers like you and tried to win the graphics battles for 2 generations and look what it got them. Last fucking place. The NES and SNES were NOT the graphical power houses of the day. The gameboy was not a graphical power house. Back in those days, they only cared about the games and doing something fun and interesting. If feel like that Nintendo has been gone for a while. Maybe it's because I'm an older gamer and I see the changes in N64 and Cube generations that led to many problems. Get back to the old school nintendo thank you very much. They are doing that with the DS and Wii in spades. I love it.

As far as core audience, I feel like they are finally listening to us, the nintendo core audience rather than listening to people like Robert Summa. No offense Robert, but if you are Nintendos core audience I would shoot myself.

Oh I get it alright. Like I said before games and hardware aren't the primary factor: marketing is. It's the reason the Gameboy, NES, SNES, PSX, PS2, DS all won their respective console wars and it's the reason the Wii seems to be on top now. It's just whether Nintendo can carry that on...

Nick...Nintendo is focusing marketing on new gamers to get new people cause they know gamers know about their 1st party titles and don't need to advertise to them directly cause they feel confident (cocky?) enough that they can sell their franchise hits cause they are well known.

Granted the commercials will show the new games and franchise games but they are more geared towards non-gamers.

There marketing is just fine. They target everyone. Not just pre-adolescent pubes with mom and dads cash to spend. Makes the parents feel better about forking over $250 cash for something they can actually enjoy too. I don't mind the slow pace begininng with some "easy" games. It'll pickup.

I just don't think we know just yet. Zelda is certainly more of a "hardcore" game that appeals to Nintendo's original audience. Some of Miyamoto's recent comments regarding Zelda's "poor" sales in Japan could indicate a change in focus for Nintendo's games to even more "casual" fare. If after Mario, MP3, and Brawl come out the good "hardcore" or "base" Nintendo games start to dry up, then this is probably why. At that point, I certainly will miss the old Nintendo.

Yeah, it is now. That's only because they saw the 64 lose to the inferior PSX and saw the Gamecube go down in flames. They've learnt their lesson and they are wiser because of it.
But you said it will pick up, and no doubt it will. Just don't expect the "hardcore" gamers to ever buy into the Wii.

Nintendo seems to be marketing to everyone besides the real gamers. Real gamers want one because they are in "the know"; not because Nintendo is marketing at them.

Does this make me feel alienated? No. But, the Wii has alienated itself from my living room because "the best gameplay experiences with the best technology they could give at the time" are missing.

"Real gamers?" Are you serious. What constitutes a "real gamer". That's as ridiculous as the phrase "hardcore gamer". They have plenty of "real games" in the pipeline for all those people that wan to spend more than 30 mins on a quick Wii Tennis rally. Nintendo are not *focusing* on "real gamers". They are trying to spread the gaming wings a little. Yeah sure, a few people maybe alienated, but with every generation who isn't. I remember my Mum used to love games. She played the SNES more than me. I could never get a look in. The 64-era onwards aliented her, along with many others I'm sure. Nintendo pulled through in the end. Now they are going back there. Back to the people who made Nintendo in the 80's.
Joe Burling's Avatar - Comment posted on 05/09/2007 12:09

Real gamers. Those are people who play games besides the occasional Solitaire on Windows. My mom never plays games so my mom <> real gamer. My dad plays the occasional PC or 360 game so my dad = real gamer. If you play games on any console, I'd consider you a real gamer.

And these are not the people Nintendo is marketing towards. Otherwise, they'd be showing the actual game in commercials instead of showing people jumping around the couch and living room, smiling, and laughing with friends.
DanGale's Avatar - Comment posted on 05/09/2007 12:13

By your definition Nintendo ARE marketing towards "real gamers". Nintendo generally *do* show game footage in their adverts. But they are *also* focusing on the people that genrally don't play games. Or the people that used to play games before 3D-era. There are people that played Nintendo years ago that were alienated with the N64. These are also the people being attracted back to gaming.

@Dan Gale,

You've got it. I was trying to make the same point. Nintendos' early success was fueled by regular folks, kids, families. People who enjoyed a bit of fun. They got too serious in the N64/Cube days with graphics and hardware. Sony and MS did the same only more successfully. Now Nintendo is going back to what made them great, the average gamers. The really hardcore gamers what want 50 space-marine shooters/ urban sandbox gamers per year were killing the industry. Let em go.
