Fils-Aime: Nintendo will focus on user-generated content in future photo

Nintendo wants you to have it your way, whether that includes tomatoes, onions, or protein-style -- but there should be enough meat for everyone. That was the gist of Reggie Fils-Aime's recent comments in regards to Nintendo's outlook on the future, which according to him, is all about user-generated content.

At the recent BMO Interactive Entertainment conference, Fils-Aime said that the era of "passive gaming" is coming to an end. He went on to outline Nintendo's outlook on user-generated content, both in past and future:

If you're in the entertainment business, any kind of entertainment, this is the game changer because no longer is entertainment a one way street of content created for audiences that just sit back and absorb it ... the era of passive entertainment is waning, active entertainment is where the action is.

While I do think user-generated content opens up wonderful new avenues in the gaming metropolis, I certainly disagree about passive gaming coming to an end -- it is a form of entertainment I will always enjoy, no matter what. It will be interesting to see how Nintendo would deal with a LittleBigPlanet-type title, however, as there are sure to be lots of less-than-family-friendly results when user content is allowed. I guess as long as everyone's wearing white and smiling, we can have a few penis drawings -- why not?

Super Mario Mii-niverse:

Mario adventures through a stream of user created levels, sewn together on the fly using some amazing content aggreagator designed by Miyamoto.

The Legend of Zelda: Hyrulian Homestead

"MiiMO". Users pull up a stake of land, ala the Sims Online, and fashions the section of the world as they please. The creations and Mii Personalities persist while the users are logged off, or logged into the game proper. Here, users take on the role of a kid in green clothes, trying to save the world through the completion of Nintendo designated Greater Legend Quests, and supporting user created quests. The end game is ultimately Miyamoto designed, and limited to a single player/ small co-op affair.

Bounty: A Metroid Adventure

Nintendo live GMs a Metroid world, wherein Players assume the role of a freelance bounty hunter. Random players can be designated as Bounty, and must then evade other players who are out for a Player Kill. The fun comes in the Evasions that the user has created. From counter measures, to whole areas of supporting influence, the user will have deisnged escape plans that other users will have to foil to meet their Bounty objective.

Um... where do we store all of this great user generated content? Maybe they should prioritize. Make an easily accessible storage device a reality before making their future plans all about downloadables in one form or another.

"User Generated Content" Srsly when did this become some fad or something? I'm not in the mood to play crappy amateur levels, to be fair there are a few that are execeptionally cool. Are game companies making us pay to play other ppl's crappy levels? It's like I just bought a video game creator program or something. I'd rather see Nintendo make games than push off the work to their audience.

No. While I think there is a place for user generated content, they should still try to create new content in the future. I hope they don't use this new stance as an excuse not to make any more good games.

Fils-Aime touted the ability of the new DSi hardware to support user-creative content. "It has two built-in cameras and the imaging software to manipulate a picture of the guy in the next cubicle any way you want, and then send it via the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection to every other DSi in the office," he said.

He also explained how in Japan, users are creating and sharing music using Band Bros. Deluxe on the DSi, while Girls Mode lets girls design clothing fashions and run a store. Moving Notepad allows for users to create hand-drawn flip books, as another example, and Wario Ware Myself allows users to design their own games and play them against friends.

Not everything related to user-generated content is going to be 'LBP.'
