It sells millions.
As for 50 Shades I won't judge a book without reading it, It seems to be another case of I'm going to hate something because it's popular. I don't like it when people tell me they hate something I like, so I don't do the same to them.
If I had to think of a reason why I dislike it, it'd be because it presents itself as intelligent well-written sophisticated literature intended for a mature audience and is, in fact, none of those things.
It's penthouse porn dressed up as high-class literature, and it turns out that was originally fan fiction for Twilight, another book series with dubious claims to validity. These are perfectly good reasons to hate it.
Though, I must admit, I often confuse this series with the scandalous but as-yet-unreleased 50 Shades of Hay detailing the irreverent lustful relationship burgeoning between several lonely equines at a Lexington horse farm.
I've seen this occur in various different ways. A relevant example is when someone purchases an over-hyped but disappointing game, and has engaged in arguments with friends in defense of it. They will not want to back down and admit they were wrong, or that they wasted money purchasing the game. They will lie to themselves and their friends to perpetuate the illusion that the game is good. This spreads outward through social groups, as more and more people delude themselves, until everyone beliefs that the game is great... when in fact, it is not. Those who are able to see through this become ridiculed and excluded from society. The worst thing about being an expert or knowledgeable about anything is that only other experts can understand you.
TLDR: Popularity has no correlation with quality. Popularity is heavily influenced by desire for social acceptance.
I remember a girl in my English class told my teacher to read 50 Shades, saying it's great literature. I sincerely hope he didn't read it. The dramatic readings are good enough evidence to say that it's trash.
Don´t Forget Bella using the poor wolf guy to make her more happy when vampire dude is not there to make her a pricess, and afther she abaddon the wolf dude when vampire guy returns.
I don't anyone here is dumb enough to think that Hyrule Historia has flat-out outsold Fifty Shades. The list is based on rate of sales. As of this moment, Hyrule Historia is the fastest-selling book on Amazon.
My chick read this book but hasn't sucked up anything. I want a refund
I didn't know it was actually officially coming to the UK. I just ordered it right now.
(Drops the mic)
Yes, people who criticise 50 Shades are idiots. Not the people who read the dreck. I don't know why you're targeting men either, the book isn't exactly empowering to women either. And the sex described is hilariously, awfully written by someone who started out writing Twilight fan fiction.
A male, 50 shades White Knight. Fucking hilarious.
I've only heard men have such vitriolic attacks against the book. I don't care if people like it or not. I don't care if its good or not. I have no interest in the book itself. I think its hilarious that men (majority of the vocal detractors of the book) are so against something, which they probably haven't read, that is for women and sexual. Are you guys that afraid to get a blowjob?
@TonyPonce Have you read the book?
Probably in a similar way to the people being roped in by the above Zelda garbage? =/
what infuriates me, though, is the fact that currently those 2 series are not only the most popular books among women. apparently these books are most, i don't know even how to call it, "respected" by female audience. we, men, are called pigs we are called superficial, sexists etc. but here we have 2 series:
1st about sexual abuse both physical and mental(and later rape) of underage and very superficial) girl by group of dudes who is all happy and don't give a crap about it. and that's called "young adult series" as "for girls up to 13-15 year old, who treat that bitch as a role model - the only plus here is the fact that in a few years we will have influx of new pornstars, strippers and VERY kinky girlfriends,
2nd is a straight BDSM-porn internet-story,
even Hunger Games trilogy, - which has very strong female for this type of novel - i would thought was more popular among female readers, but apparently, it's not.
yeah i'm an idiot because i would like to meet and marry a women that is funny, smart and stand for what women fought over the last century, independence and their free will. not one that thinks that rape is okay and acts like she was molested by her father.
when Twilight character is considered a ROLE MODEL by 10-15 year old girls, you should be disturbed.
Damn, you didn't just attack a strawman, you attacked a field of strawmen with such a sweeping generalization that has no facts to back it up, anyway.
And no, not everything I read is Catcher in the Rye. That book is not to my tastes at all. Haven't the faintest why it's so controversial.
that is the most horrifying sentence I've read in my whole life as of yet.
As a woman, I'm ashamed this, and Twilight, are bestsellers.
