FFXIII-2 levels up, equips Facebook photo

In a bizarre twist of events, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is getting Facebook support. By inputting your social network credentials in the game's settings, you'll be able to update your friends on your party structure, story progress, and other useless statistics.

Does anyone else think this is kind of backwards? Personally, I think this idea is far better suited for leaderboards. I like the idea of in-game information staying in-game, and not having to use an additional step to compare stats. It's much more convenient to see how my friends are doing by using a simple seamless menu while playing, than it is to leave my console and go check a third party website to see what my friends are up to.

But hey, at least it's better than Final Fantasy's other "2", which only really offered super stylish outfits. For more information, check out the official press release after the break.

Greetings!

Square Enix announced today the ability for players to post achievements and trophies on Facebook® as they journey through FINAL FANTASY® XIII-2, now available at retailers.

For the first time in FINAL FANTASY history, players can keep friends up-to-date with their gaming experience via a direct link to Facebook. Once players are introduced to the Historia Crux, they will have the chance to upload information about their progress: including current party setup, monsters collected, battle scores and more.

FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 Key Features
·        A New Tale Awaits
FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 will reveal further events from the amazing mythology as presented in the original FINAL FANTASY XIII. The story is written in a way that it can still be enjoyed without playing the previous title.
·        Larger, More Interactive Environments
Places with multiple pathways to explore and many secrets to find offer players the chance to shape their own adventure.
·        Time Travel - A New Dimension of Exploration
The situation, scenery, flora, fauna and weather conditions all change, depending on when you visit locations. Untangling the threads of time is essential to experience the full story.
·        Enhanced Battle System
New elements, such as visually dynamic Cinematic Action sequences and the Mog Clock that rewards players for their actions, create further variety and choice for the player.
·        Master of Monsters
A wide variety of more than 150 different monsters inhabiting the game world can be recruited into the player’s party and battle strategy, with each creature having unique and devastating special abilities.

It's a stupid idea, who cares about these kind of things on anyone's Facebook-stream? And if you have gamer-buddies I'd imagine you would already discuss about the games you're playing with them.

ehh i don't really like the whole FB thing(even though i published mine on my account; all it does is show trophies)

i don't even used it that much. probably only 3 people on it and i don't go searching everyone on the net so i have little to no reason to use it besides those 3 people.

though it's optional so it's all good :P

I'm really enjoying FFXIII-2 so far!

I think it might actually be my favorite RPG.

Yeah, Square-Enix is just an oblivious arrogant asshole at this point. They're like every cartoon and toy line from the 80's and 90's making a new "extreme" reimagining of their products to cater to the new generation of youths back in the early 00's.

Wish I could kick Motomu Toriyama in the ballsack.

I'm not exactly an "extreme" gamer, but I'm absolutely positive none of my friends on Facebook care about the games I play. I'm getting tired of constantly having Facebook integration with shoved down my throat with games and apps. It makes me think that it's really more about the company tracking its users and having an easy avenue to deliver advertisements. Junk advertisement comments and messages on Facebook is most likely the future.

FF13-2 needs to equip a good story, better characters and a battle system that isn't like FF13's.

I've had a few Facebook friends that had games posting their trophy progress and so forth as they played. Every last one of them got embarrassed and turned the feature off once they realized it was spamming their wall with useless nonsense.

This sounds like the sort of feature that someone at the publisher suggests without having any real idea of how it will actually make the game better. "Hey Jeff, the producer says we have to have social network integration. Make the game post stuff to the player's wall." "Crap. Ok."

That said, I would be down with something like LA Noire's Ask The Community feature in an RPG, e.g. if I die on a boss fight I can ask to see party setups of people who've succeeded or something like that. Key word: "ask".

Chris, get Mulder and Scully on the case, they'll figure out in no time the dark reasonings as to why FF has been sucking so bad lately...I think it has something to do with the "smoking man"... :(

As long as there is not a stupid Facebook button in any of the game menus, then I do not care. Nothing is more annoying than seeing that button. Why do game devs and/or publishers feel they need to integrate social networks in a non-social game.

I bought FFXIII the other day for 10 dollars and played about 10 minutes of it. Haven't had the urge to pick it up since.

I'd rather not degrade myself and not join a social networking site abundant with mindless illiterate 13 year old simians to just check other peoples pointless game progression and stats, let alone sharing mine.

Facebook is not the same as gaming, and the two should not mingle at all.

"But hey, at least it's better than Final Fantasy's other "2"." Why would you even compare this game that came out this year to a game released in 2003? Not cool man not cool.

Unless its a Facebook game, Facebook should really stay out of gaming. I bet anything Square got the idea from the 360's achievement sharing and ran with the idea without thinking.

Leaderboards are fine, but the entirety of your social circle doesn't care about your leveling progress, even if they already know your a gamer. If they care enough (IE and to do that they'd probably have to be gamers themselves) they'll also have the game and can check the leaderboard. (And leaderboards for an RPG seem a little excessive any way, but thats a whole other thing)
