Totally agree with you, it's not racist but just an ill-judged blanket statement put crudely. If he said "I'm not a fan of Japanese games these days", I don't think anybody would really care.

Also Jon Blow should know about joyless husks because Braid was a pretentious, hideous, snorefest. At least Fez looks really enjoyable.

Naw, he is absolutely correct. Japanese games do suck anymore. They've been left in the dust by a lot of other countries publishers. Originally, in the nes and snes days, japan WAS the only creator of games... its not like that anymore. Hell, this has been said for the past 10 years. Just because a dude says it bluntly, doesn't mean it isn't correct.
There are exceptions to the rules of course, because a lot of other countries games suck also. But as a whole, the japanese industry pales in comparison to what it used to be.

Not that i give a shit about Phil fish but yeah games from japan have been kinda shit as of late.Between my PS1-3 and my 360 i have about 30 very japanese games but 90% of thats from my ps2 collection.FF13 made me cringe hard with the pedo sarah stuff and i havent seen anything from japan in the last 6 years worth buying outside resident evil and devil may cry.
I don't think it's racist. It would be racist if he said their games suck because they're Japanese, but I think it was a criticism of the design of Japanese games rather than their makers.

I don't see why people think they should hate on Fez because of this. Just because you think the guy who made it is a jerk, doesn't mean you can't enjoy what looks to be a cute, clever game.

Japan keeps making games and game stories for teenagers and shut-ins; all us players and developers in the West have done is just grow out of some of them (Final Fantasy, I'm looking at you).

Mr. Fish, I would like to introduce you to a concept called "timing." It's what separates a comment from being funny and being a failure. Telling a random Japanese developer this his entire country's games suck at game developer's conference during a Q&A? That's what we call "bad timing."
This is so weird. I've watched a couple of videos with Phil Fish (one where he was interviewed by Max and Tara at PAX, and another with Tara, him and Anthony Carboni discussing the term gamer) and he always seemed like such an intelligent and nice guy.

I think the spirit of his statement, and I taking some giant liberties here, is that Japanese games suck much more often than they used to. Which IS true. I mean, it used to be that Japan was pumping out great games all the time; they still do, but to a far reduced degree...
That isn't to say that North American and European games are suddenly all amazing, because I think they have the same consistent quality problems that Japan does.

It's true that games from Japan have taken a dip from their golden PS2 era but critically acclaim games like Dark/Demon Souls, Nintendo's games, and a few others prove this guy completely wrong. Looking at the best games of this generation, most of them come from Japan in my opinion.
I don't remember the last Japanese game I've played and enjoyed...maybe Ninja Gaiden 2?

When I heard this, I couldn't believe it. I think it's so wrong. Sure Japanese games aren't where they used to be, but to make such a blanket statement like that to a dude's face... What a tool.

I think there may be a grain of truth to his statement, but it's not a problem that does not manifest itself here in the West too.
Too many studios are coasting along making the same shit they've been making for years. Yes, there are fair complaints to be had about that stagnation of JRPGs, but the West keeps churning out shooters, that are also largely too similar.

Demons Souls is the saving grace of Japanese game development in your opinion? Well then they are pretty fucked from where I'm standing, never have I played a more overhyped piece of shit...
