Fenner Investments versus the Big Three photo

Scrabbles over patents never fail to amuse me. Never put it past some thinky little troll to investigate every nook and cranny of the judicial system they possibly can. This time it's Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo up on the chopping block, courtesy of one Fenner Investments, who claim the big three are infringing on the company's patent  for a "low-voltage joystick port interface."

Good night! First the Immersion drama, and now this. Unfortunately, Immersion had some decent ground to work with and Sony lost the case to them, perhaps contributing to the decision to eliminate the rumble feature from the PS3 controllers. Question is, has Sony learned a lesson, or will they fight this one to the end too? When it comes to the fine print, it's hard to be sure where things will go. Also, is this one a truly legitimate claim or a slimy attempt at pawing money away from bigger players? The patent summary is as follows:

“The joystick port interface according the present invention is a low power port which interfaces a typical 5 Volt joystick peripheral device with a lower power computer port. The low-voltage joystick port interface includes a bidirectional buffer circuit and a pulse generator which, together, generate a digital pulse signal, representing a joystick coordinate position, based on an input analog measurement signal.”

What do you think? Valid or a bucket of crap? Tell me in the comments.

I can't tell if it's valid or not since the patent summary doesn't make sense to me (Psych major). I will say this sounds a lot less legit than what I read about the Immersion case.

The patent was filed long after companies had already begun the use of analog sticks.

Awesome, companies getting sued is always fun. Maybe Sony will learn this time and settle out of court instead of contesting it and losing. who knows, maybe the PS4 won't have a joystiq, ahaha

I hate legal mumbo jumbo. As far as I can tell, these people have a patent for... a joystick? An analog joystick? Wow.

This case should be dismissed on the grounds of plaintiff's stupidity...

They find some vauge similarity then sue for an outragous amount of money.

Fucking parasites.

The patent is for a device to allow use of a 5V joystick on 3.3V computer joystick ports (and do the conversions based on the analog movement of the joystick). Most consoles are now wireless, for one, and for two, they do not now, nor have they ever, use PC joystick ports. It is a very specific patent.

I am thinking this sounds completely baseless.

That's so absurd. As we speak, these people are drawing up blueprints for an "A" button and then soaking them in weak tea. "No, see, we thought of it first, see how old the diagrams look?"

Do they seriously think they can sue all three at once?

MS alone could hire a lawyer team that could convince a judge black was white and up was down

This is, as Nagiko said, a bucket of crap. Joysticks have been around a hell of a lot longer than Fenner Investments; and now they want a quick buck. This is what is so wrong with the American legal system; people decide they want money so they look for some ridiculous technicality and sue for everything possible. Just like McDonalds junkies suing for their fatness.

Cory FTW because that sounds like the most technical answer so far. How do you know all that stuff? I want to learn.

I was born without an olfactory bulb (meaning I have no sense of smell.) but I can still detect the aroma of grade A BULLSHIT coming from these jerks.

The description of the patent, #6,297,751, says it was originally developed by Lucent Technologies in 1998, the same year the original DualShock was released in the US for use with the original PlayStation. It is unclear how Fenner acquired patent #6,297,751 from Lucent, now called Alcatel-Lucent following its merger with French telecommunications firm Alcatel last year.
