If you don't like it, don't look at it.
As for the "rational debate" issue, let's be honest -- there are no rational arguments in video games. Even when the issue of racism was brought up with Resident Evil 5, it was brought up in the worst manner possible (and I'm not referring to N'Gai Croal -- he was at least professional). When somebody argues a point rationally, it's so far out of the realm of the norm that, often times, we're not sure how to react.
But, then those same people usually ruin the intelligent discussion by alluding to your propensity towards sucking cock.
This is pretty god damn funny stuff though. You can throw anything into their comments section and within seconds be diligently swatted down for the hate monger you are. Or in this case everyone who disagrees with them is.
But give me a break. Do you honestly think someone the size of this bitch (or hell, myself) is going to have the SAME occupation as Lara Croft? *I* can't climb rocks with my bare hands, and I know damned well I can't. Hell, most THIN people these days couldn't either - not for their weight, but for lack of musculature. Skinny doesn't necessarily = strong, and Lara Croft does NOT look like Paris Hilton. She's got thighs, she's got tits. Oh, but don't make her tits too big - that's sexist!
Same for female cops. I don't think I've ever seen a female cop as large as I am, or as large as the whiny bint who wrote the opinionated slop in question. These are job with PHYSICAL DEMANDS. Yes, there ARE some differences between fat and thin women. Take your head out of the fucking sand and realize that. It doesn't mean "better" or "worse" - it just means different.
These are also women who, in the course of these games, get knocked around, kidnapped, attacked, and so on. They have jobs that not only would I not be ABLE to do, but fucking hell, I wouldn't WANT to do them. Being chased by goddamned zombies is NOT better than having a sandwich and watching Black Books. Not at all.
Thanks for responding! I was totally psyched to see you say: "defacto man-hating is NOT feminism," seeing as this was one of my biggest concerns when I read the title of your blog entry: "Feminists sh*t all over Fat Princess."
Beyond that, I agree with many of the above points: this woman's critique of the game was fairly ill-informed, and she's using the term heteronormative entirely incorrectly. And thanks to Mr Gilder, I even learned a little bit more about the nature of the game and its "beloved princess."
So all in all, apart from the folks jumping in to say "STFU" and call every feminist a hairy lesbian, I'd say that some good came of this discussion. It's always nice when the reasonable side of the internet rears its stunningly sexy head.
Considering much of what they had to deal with was derogatory, it looks like they wiped any new users or anonymous users at one point. I don't think they were looking for any sort of debate on their opinions, for better or worse.
Writing them off as man-haters is your attempt as rational debate? In my experience, feminists usually do have good arguments to back their opinion up. Not necessarily ones I agree with, but still ones I can listen to and respect as an open-minded person. The problem here is that noone didn't even take that first step before starting the hate machine and shut down all debate. You'll never know what arguments was behind the post at Feminist Gamers. All you've done is to cement your prejudice of each other.
I'm looking forward to the day when there's a sensitive, respectful debate about a serious issue in gaming on Destructoid. I really do, but I won't hold my breath.
I'm pretty sure in Jim's last post he was saying that not all feminists are crazy man-haters, and not the other way around.
The other way around, of course, being that not all crazy man-haters are feminists. Although this is also true. Man-eating lions are one example. Very few feminists are in said population.
Few people with opinions THIS stupid can process nor or worthy of a sound debate.
I can't say why that particular person is flipping you off, but let me say this with absolute certainty; many of the misogynist comments these women get on their blogs deserve a much harsher response than the finger. If there's anything that would make a blogging feminist man-hating, it would be the hateful comments she gets from mainly men.
I varied my language for the sake of language, actually. Fat and big-boned are the same thing in my comments. Watch the new fat fighter in Street Fighter 4, for example. Or go watch Kung Fu Panda. These male characters are fairly common, and female equivalents are hard to imagine.
And please, "why complain about X when Y is so much worse" is not an argument. There's always something worse to complain about. Disagree? Well, why do you complain about a few hissy feminists when there are worse things?
Timmeh:
Being dismissive of gamers is mainly because they hear the same shit over and over from complete idiots. It's like being dismissive of Jack Thompson - sooner or later you shut him out. I can't speak for a particular feminist of course, but I know what certain people say to them online. You should blame hateful gaming idiots first, then any eventual feminist idiots.
ghets:
They shut down the comments because a flood of stupid gamers flock to their blogs to fling shit at them. They have all reason to complain about trolling - trolling perpetrated by hateful fellow gamers. That's the sad truth.
I didn't accuse Jim Sterling of writing off ALL feminists as man-haters.
Bioautographical:
Clucking and backpatting... Kinda like the comments here, only from the opposite camp? How evil of them.
I won't comment on the person behind Shakesville. The people at Feminist Gamers are generally very sensible, if you give them a chance, with an open mind. If you think there was any chance of that and coming to some kind of understanding of each others' viewpoints, I must claim you're wrong. It probably died the moment the first troll from here called the blogger a c*nt.
Jim Sterling:
I think you're writing them off too easily, but that's just me. What kind of feminists don't you write off? Have you made any posts about feminist issues in games that I can read? I don't mean to test you or anything, I'm just curious.
No, clucking and backpatting in that they don't even address any points that have been made. They DID get some rational debate, and all they've done is essentially babble on with "U GO GURL!" and call people bigots who hadn't even made bigoted comments. When EVERYONE with a contrary opinion is called a bigot or "heteronormative" when they hadn't even MADE any anti-woman, anti-gay statements - yes, that's when it approaches the realm of not evil, but utter frothing stupidity.
Of course, when someone comes across with such, more frothing stupidity will likely follow. But anyone who really looks will find some decent points. They're not looking; here, there HAS been some discussion (and of the pointless "rally" posts that have been made here vs. there? Ours are insanely funnier, because people here have a sense of humour. You're inviting trouble the moment you imply that there is any subject on the face of this planet that cannot be laughed at. It can, and it will).
There was plenty of reasonable debate in the Feminist Gamer post's comments, until they were closed because of abuse from the funny people from here who are so open-minded they think practical misogyny and racism is hilarious. I guess it's all OK if you can chuckle about it.
The follow-up post on FG was also full of sensible comments, and also descriptions of the hate she gets. Regardless of whether the feminists are right about the game or not, a lot of gamers seem to be determined to prove them right by funny sexist comments. At least we're laughing at the hate, right? Haha, it's the internet.
Maybe the comments weren't bigoted and the accusations were uncalled for, sure. Another explanation is that you don't see the bigotry. If you're completely free from prejudice, you should always go with the first explanation. If not, you might want to at least consider number two. Just saying.
They're overreactionary crybabies. They're enlightened, everyone else just blows Rush Limbaugh and throws kittens into woodchippers. As a large female myself, their type thoroughly disgust me. I'm not offended at bigotry NEARLY so much as I am offended by the overuse and over-classification of the word itself. Pretty soon, everyone will be bigots and the word will mean ABSOLUTELY nothing. People like them are going to cry-wolf humanity into a fucking corner.
And yes. I'll still be laughing.
People use anything as an excuse to complain about anything. I bet nobody would be complaining if the fat shit in the game was a guy. What's the problem? I've always wanted a videogame to poke fun at a female porker, I thought that's all this game was about? Better return to my GTAIV murder-simulator to prepare for tonights murderfest I'm having in my city.... -_-
Someone wanted to know who some fat positive male game characters are, I got one right off the top of my head: MARIO! He's a total fatty! Jolly too!
I'm not a 22-year-old, 260 lb, balding male because of my genes. I am what I am because I love the sweets.
Actually, yes. As I'm made to understand, the princess' forces cause her to eat and get fat so that the enemy can't carry her off.
They'd rather she be fat than kidnapped. HOW HORRIBLE AND EVIL!
I don't care that you're a woman. It doesn't lend any credibility to your arguments. Women are perfectly capable of being sexist as well, even against other women. I'm very sure that the people at FG wouldn't go easy on you for being a woman. If they are harsh against men it might be because hundreds of them flock to the blog to shit all over it every time they dare have an opinion about their beloved games.
If you write any complaining off as whining, I'm sure you don't see many arguments as sensible. I can't really argue with baseless accusations of crybabery and whining, so unless you have something to back your opinions up with, I don't have anything more to say.
ace of knaves:
Heteronormativity doesn't really mean anti-gay, although it often has that effect. It means that heterosexuality is what's considered normal, so that anything else becomes strange or bad in comparison. Exactly how it applies here I don't quite know, however.
Women have it a little easier anyway when it comes to being overweight, some of them kinda become walking playgrounds that are still attractive, but others like the angry feminist enter some sort of rabid land sea cow stage.
Actually, it occured to me about two months ago that it probably has more to do with the shit that I eat.
I'm actually a little embarassed to admit this, but I actually joined weight watchers a few weeks ago and radically changed my diet. In that short time, I've lost a pretty significant amount of weight and my hair has started to fill in a little bit.
While balding is, yes, hereditary, there's no reason that I should look like a bloated captain picard at 22.
So the complaint itself is devoid of any basis whatsoever, but if THAT wasn't bad enough, the complaining was accompanied by whining hysterics, buzzword abuse, prejudicial assumptions and so on. I'm not saying my opinion means any more or less if I am a woman. I'm saying that, for someone who wants to talk about "those free of prejudice", FG/Melissa McWhiner (since obviously, FG lends its not-so-tacit support to her) are real quick to assume that someone who assumes a contrary stance must be either 1) skinny or 2) male. That is EXTREMELY prejudicial, so it's real funny how you try to paint them as the paragons of equality and rational discussion. They're the farthest thing from it.
What's so great about women who are so weak they need protection? The princess is a useless piece of baggage that can't do anything by herself but stuff her face. That's a perfectly valid way of seeing this. It doesn't invalidate your opinion and it won't steal the game from you. Yet you can't see any worth at all in their side and you can't stop yourself from petty namecalling? I'm sorry, you're just as bad as you claim the feminists are.
I can't help you if you don't believe they get a flood of angry idiots, most of them male, who spew their hate loudly every time they write something critical. They have no reason to be civil to trolls and naysayers, and yet they occassionally are. Your general commenter is rude, stupid, irrational and hateful in comparison.
It was kind of like "Super-Size Me" the movie, but in real life. When all you eat is a ton of hormone-injected shit and don't exercize at all, your body just starts to fall apart...
A ton of fast food, gallons of dr. pepper, and mountains of mike and ike.
Bioautographical has stated MANY TIMES her opinion on this issue, and i tend to agree with her entirely, she has deliverede it quite intelligently, and while there is some name calling, if you actually read the shakesville blog, you calling Bioautographical a petty namecaller, and then so entirely defend these "feminists" is like the pot calling the kettle black (seriously those people have some misguided hate).
Nothing i have seen so far on this game denoted a negative attitude towards being obese, rather its an obstacle to be overcome.
in short,
in short i think that we would be better served to focus on more important issues, like others have said before, if they really were feminists they would be focusing on IMPORTANT issues to their gender (low conviction of rape etc.)
What's so great about games and movies that portray fat MEN as oafish, stupid and/or brutal? The day they get all up in arms about that is the day I'll raise a stink about this. They're called fictional archetypes. We have games where women are the protagonist, the hero, the one who saves the day. And we have games where they need rescuing. We have games where men are villains, and some where women are villains. There are also games where turtles and reptiles and animals are villains as well, or need rescuing; I'm sure I'll see PETA and THEIR hysterical nutjobs someday as well, when they've got nothing better to bitch about.
I can see WHERE they're deriving their point of view; I just think that point of view is derived from 1) idiocy and/or 2) the need to have SOMETHING to bitch about. They're the type who think there HAS to be a big, scary boogeyman in every dark corner. Sometimes a game is just a game, sometimes you play it, shut the fuck up and have fun (or don't, and go find something non-offensively sexist to play instead).
And while it's no particular skin off my nose that they whine and cry about it, I think it's hilarious to watch them be laughed at, and wonder why no one takes them seriously. They are eye-glazingly ridiculous. As ridiculous as black people who think "Devil's food cake" has racist implications. They are SEARCHING for something to take offense to, since being offended is quite literally an entire INDUSTRY these days.
This doesn't bother me, needless to say. Fat people can be way too sensitive, sometimes. I don't like to be made fun of, but if you're overweight, there's a good chance you're responsible for being overweight. It's not good, it's not healthy, and you need to own up to it and deal with it.
And I thought they were jolly, oh well.
(Hopefully the image goes through, lol.)

I can kinda see why this would make them irate. But then again, maybe they just ran out of Cheetos long enough to rant.
