Man... I am just so damn contrary today... God, it is so much easier when you agree with the popular opinion... >_>
I feel like my command of the English language will soon degrade. I will then grow belligerent and childish. Finally, I will lose my grasp on reality and the transformation will be complete; I will have become the new jimmyx.
Also, why so resistant to change? Do you really want to play the exact same thing you've played before?

Also, on the go play suits this game more than a console. Can't wait.
The original Little King's story had unique art direction, part Manga, part western storybook, part western fantasy. This new art direction looks totally generic, like it was drawn by someone who just bought a "How to draw the Manga" way art book.
I hope that the game has fewer cut scenes that the original, because that art just totally kills the Little King's Story feeling.
Probably won't bother with it.
dun dun DUN!!!

As someone who didn't play a whole lot of the original, it's possible that I'm less offended by this than someone who has obviously put some time and love into it. I can understand why the art doesn't sit right with you (I'd be grumpy if the Ogre series was given a Kingdom Hearts makeover), but perhaps the art will suit the tone of the game better. There's got to be a reason the developers took this direction, right?
Maybe the narrative and visuals will complement each other, even if it doesn't completely recapture the feeling of the original LKS. I'm just saying, I think it's worth it not to write off the new art completely. Who knows? Maybe it'll grow on you. That's what happened to me with the new DmC.
I suppose in the long run, you're just worried that the sequel won't capture the magic of the original. I feel you there, but if you're only giving the sequel "three strikes," I don't know if the first one should necessarily be the art.
One of its most interesting features was its weird art style and well told coming of age story, filled with commentary on society and humanity.
Both of which seem to have been chucked out the window here, from what I've seen.
I'm sure the gameplay will be good. But if you can, please try out the original.
There is no real use in explaining the other aspects which compose a good game to Holmes.
Holmes hates everything the PS Vita stands for and will not stand to reason.
I only know Holmes through some E3 2011 video footage and his PS Vita related articles (one of which he directly translated prices for PS Vita memory cards) and I can safely conjecture that I have not met a human being that hates anything more than Jonathan Holmes hates the PS Vita.
It is just that simple. Just reporting the facts! Holmes is using his position in Destructoid as a part-time writer on Destructoid to try and kill the PS Vita. Quite frankly, it is pathetic.
You sicken me Holmes.
>D
The art in the first one was somewhat "childish" (not in a bad way, that's just how it was) and now the art is a little more defined/mature. It totally fits with the storyline of the game. The first is a coming-of-age story and this one takes place with the king more grown-up. I think the art direction makes total sense (and looks good too!).
For established series, I don't mind drastic changes in the art direction so much... Castlevania: Lords of Shadow being a good example (also a polarizing one, depending on who you ask). I also tend to like some games based solely on art direction, like El Shaddai or Dark Souls. If either of those had a drastic change in visual direction, I'd probably lose interest.

Is it really all that different that it qualifies as a strike against the game? It looks pretty good, if you ask me, and the gameplay looks good, which I think is more important.
Honestly, seems like an awfully minor thing to complain about.
However, I'm getting this feeling that it's going to have those dialogue scenes that are between two pieces of static character art. You know the ones in ever other jrpg. :\
Not really. If the art style refelcts on how the game is portrayed as a whole, it is a huge impact. For instance: Jet Set Radio. If they were to do the sequel and change the style from cel-shaded & comic book-ish, to dark & gritty. Dark & gritty doesn't make Jet set Radio. Art style is why a lot of people are complaining over Rayman Origins, DmC, SFxTK, etc.
But still, diferrent strokes for different folks.
@Aaron
...Overlord?
I totally forgot about those games! Though the esthetic of this game seem more like a copy then the bleak gray and brown esthetic of the Overlord games. I wonder why ZeniMax will sue someone over the word scrolls but Nintendo let's this slide?
Anyhoo, the biggest issue the original faced was likely it's less than marketable visual style. The game looked like it was for kids (which repelled the hardcore) but was very difficult and deep (which repelled kids). DAMN good game though. Anyone who owns a wii, should own Little King's Story.
I'll try to view this like I did Twilight Princess how although I liked Wind Waker's art direction better that didn't mean I did't like the way Twilight Princess looks.
What has me irked most is that it's not being developed by the original studio, most of the time when a new studio takes over a game it doesn't feel much like the original. Though marvelous isn't a bad studio so maybe they can pull it off.
Not that I remember. I only remember there being two places with any amount of color and that was the first part with the Halflings, and that grove in the Elves' forest were you have to kill the Unicorns. That's all I remember of the first game anyway I never played the second. Then again Dragon Age didn't have any places like that so I guess you're right lol.
Besides the only similarity between Overlord and Pikmen was the very basics of gameplay mechanics. I didn't instantly think of Pikmen while playing it like I did just watching the trail for this game.
I totally agree, as a huge cing fan, i am utterly dissapointed they wrecked the gorgeous art style in favour of the generic anime style found everywhere in japan. it disgusts me. Little King Story and A boy and his blob were one of the most unique games i've played on the wii, and the art direction downright blew me away!
This doesnt exist in my eyes, i hope to god Hotel Dusk/Last Window isnt ressurected only to be butchered like Little King Story is!
I remember once hearing an interview with one of the directors of the Tales series. He was asked why the protagonists in the series keep getting younger and younger. His response was: "well, our main audience is 14 year-olds, so we're just catering to their preferences". The point of that story is that games like this aren't made with adults in mind. I love JRPGs, but sometimes I feel like I'm "too old for this shit".
