[Editor's note: SWE3tMadness kicks off September's promotions with her hatred for Zant from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Spoiler alert! -- CTZ]

(MAJOR SPOILERAGE ahead! You've been warned!)

There are many things in videogames that I despise. Cheap deaths, framerate slowdown, and ridiculously charted Guitar Hero songs are just a few examples, but while they can elicit frustration and anger, true hatred can only be brought about by emotional attachment. You have to be able to like something at first, then when a major plot point, or twist, or action involving that character goes awry, it all comes crashing down, Like a jilted lover, my bitterness at this deception has mostly been related to one character, the example I use in this post: Zant, the self-proclaimed King of Twilight.

So this may seem a little strange that I pick one of the main villains in what is by and large a very respectable game. I, in fact, know a lot of Zelda fans that love him. So what in his character utterly pissed me off when I played through the game? Hit the jump to find out.

Well, first of all, I didn't hate Zant all the way through. At the beginning of the game he was downright intimidating when he confronted Zelda with his horde of Twilight creatures - a scene with a spooky atmosphere almost reminiscent of Silent Hill rather than the Legend of Zelda. His presence as a major evil player in the storyline is furthered when Midna reveals her background and explains that Zant was passed over for the throne because of his ambition and greed. So he forcibly seized the throne and cursed her to the impish form that you find her in. And he isn't necessarily a "sit back and watch my minions do all the work" sort of bad guy either, numerous times throughout the game he gets hands-on with his evil mission. Once you finish collecting the Fused Shadow pieces, he doesn't steal them but simply throws them away. He then claims that his power is so immense that he doesn't even need the Fused Shadows, which are, by the way, ancient Twlight relics so powerful they were sealed away and turn innocent creatures into monsters when they come into contact with them. Zant then goes on to demonstrate his power as he binds Link in his wolf form and nearly kills Midna.

Figure A. - Badass.

Later on when you get to the shadow temple of the game (Fine, Twilight Palace, if you're picky), you see just what his twisted schemes have brought on even his own people. They're all transformed into the red-marked Twilight beasts, much like the one you battle throughout the game. I went to attack one and Midna had to remind me that they were just innocent civilians twisted by Zant's dark rule. As you get closer to the final battle with Zant, he sends giant versions of his freaky mask that shoot balls of magic at you. And did I mention that they're invincible except to their own magic attacks? Those apparitions scared me the first time I ran into them because I couldn't figure out how to kill the damn things. But while these moments were sad or scary, they didn't make me hate Zant, they only strengthened my resolve to defeat him and bring back light and justice to the world. These moments all but cemented him as a major, powerful villain in the franchise, and I even began to respect his character quite a bit.

Unfortunately, it's this buildup to the final showdown with Zant that makes his downfall all the more infuriating.

As you walk into the Twilight throne room, the obligatory villain monologue starts. At this point, I'm eagerly paying attention because I want to know more about Zant and his motives, and see his true character behind the mask. Of course by this point I have an idea that he really isn't the main bad guy (that honor is always reserved for Ganondorf) but that doesn't mean that he can't go out with a bang. I'm waiting for some huge plot twist that shows us what an awesome character he really is.

Figure B. - Even more badass.

And boy was I mistaken.

It turns out that Zant here just bitches throughout the entire scene about "Oh, I really deserved that throne! But noooooo, everyone was just a poopyhead and wouldn't let me have it!" while prancing about the room like a demented clown. Not like Kefka though, just a demented clown.

Then the bomb drops -- he's merely a PUPPET for Ganondorf. Throughout the game he was just a whiny pansy with delusions of grandeur until Ganondorf (quite literally) drops out of the sky and bestows him with great power to do his evil work in the Twilight realm. So none of the truly malicious deeds he committed were due to his own cunning or abilities, only in service to what he sees as a sort of twisted god, Ganondorf. Instead of the badass I expected, a character that used his own power and plans to seize control of two worlds, he is quite powerless except for what was given to him by Ganondorf.

This theme is further emphasized in his fight where he simply copies other boss fights, and you can easily defeat each stage of the battle by utilizing the items that you used on the respective bosses beforehand (Forest temple = Gale boomerang, Water Temple = Hookshot, etc). Then even when defeated, he can't taunt with any threats of his own retribution, all he can spit out is that since it was Ganondorf's power that cursed Midna to her current form, only killing him will change her back. Which promptly infuriates Midna so much that she destroys Zant anyways. Nice going, dude.

Figure C. - FAIL.

So essentially, in two cutscenes and one short boss fight, Zant is reduced from supreme usurper King of Twilight to an irritatingly whiny lackey of Ganondorf with no real power of his own. Even the final showdown with Ganondorf felt less epic than other titles like Ocarina of Time, simply because I associated the great evil that I struggled against the entire game to Zant (the puppet), and not Ganondorf (the puppetmaster). And even the emotion I felt against that evil was lessened, defiled if you will, because the character that I associated it with was nothing more than a pawn.

I really did like Zant at the beginning, but instead of elevating him to a sort of Villain-Hall-Of-Fame in my opinion, the abrupt change of power after defeating him kept the story, character, and even the actual final boss, from achieving the kind of fond remembrance and respect reserved for other videogames. And it's that one fault that makes me hate it all the more.

Good post, and good point! I was a little disappointed with Zant towards the end. I didn't mind Ganon being the mask behind it all and Zant being the puppet, but when he went all clown loopy, it was just weird. He seemed so majestic during the rest of the game, almost like he didn't walk, he floated majestically. But when that scene happened where he prances around like a prat, it just seemed out of character.

I completely agree with you. Zant going all clown-crazy ruined any sort of attachment for him. He was a total bamf and then he ends up prancing around like a fairy.

Great post

I'm Sorry, but I have to disagree.

Zant spent the whole game as this completely badass villain; engulfing the land in twilight, utterly humiliating powerful light spirits by waving his hands about, and almost murdering Midna.
Thats why I thought it was really interesting that when you finally confronted him, when you finally cornered him, you saw that underneath it all he was just a child, corrupted by the power given to him by Ganondorf.
So yes, he was shown as whiny and childish, having a bit of a fit about not being made king, but it showed that Ganondorf had taken advantage of his desparation for his own needs.

I despised the completely topical character development for all characters in TP, and Zant's lack of an individual story with depth is a prefect representation of how this game's story was fucked.

I felt more of a connection with Talon in OoT than I did Zelda, Midna, Zant, Ganondorf from TP.

I knew Zant wouldn't be the end of Twilight Princess, but I was disappointed to find out his powers and all of his endless posturing was for nothing; it was all a gift from Ganondorf, the real major player. Though Zant turned out to be a flop, getting to have an honest to goodness, face to face locking of blades with the King of Evil and Lord of Darkness himself was quite awesome.

I'm with Jogrbbs, here.

I mean so many villains are defeated by killing them, but Zant... he got humiliated.

I think Zant is a shitty villain, but if you don't see the point behind him (giving power to those who crave it) and didn't see the plot twist (suddenly GANONDORF!) then you should take a step back. Yes, he was a shitty character. Kinda bad-ass, then totally fruit loops, but to be honest the whole game felt like a let down, at least to me, and I think Zant ends up being the fall guy.

He really is a whiny-ass brat, but in retrospect, I think that was perfect for him. Ganondorf chose a weak soul to manipulate to bring him back, and it worked out absolutely perfectly.

I completely agree with your letdown...

Sadly, Twilight Princess itself is without doubt the worst 3D zelda game ever made, so it's not really unexpected.

Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and windwaker were far superior.

Well given the fact that I enjoyed Twilight Princess despite it being a carbon copy of the Ocarina of Time with a poorly done new mechanic to make it fresh, I still find it funny when people say they hate the game. Everyone wanted an adult link, and the tech demo Nintendo showed way back in the day of Link fighting Ganondorf was what you clamored for. They gave it to you. Sure it wasn't the best Zelda game ever, but what a lot of people here are complaining about is the plot. This is the first Zelda that actually had a plot outside of Ganondorf is back to rule, Link has to stop him, Zelda is going to get kidnapped. = /

I apologize for my rant.

I'm with JoGrbbs. I mean, we've all PLAYED Final Fantasy VII, we know what that badass character archetype is like. I applaud Nintendo for doing something more interesting with his character than keeping him two-dimensional throughout.
I agree, though, that the bait-and-switch execution was a bit sloppy, and they could have played out the whole 'corrupted child' angle much more effectively. But hey, this is Zelda, no one gives it points for its exemplary storytelling.

Zant's totally awesome outfit, and groovy looking helmet thingy prevented me from hating him. Also I was never to sure about him throughout TP anyways, I always felt he was a phony or something. Great read though :D

This makes me wonder what would happen if Nintendo hired a talented writer to craft a Zelda storyline. Maybe Zant could have achieved Kefka-levels of greatness in the right storyteller's hands, puppet of Gannon or not.

Yeah he seemed to change quickly from staunch evil villan to winey dancy fool very quickly after they showed Gannon. For such a build up to have an anticlimax is just unfair.

Wow, apparently I'm the only one that thinks Twilight Princess is the best game? At first I thought it was a hype thing, but after playing it a few times, as well as the other Zelda's, I still think it's tied for first with Majora's Mask for my favorite (I guess I like the weirder games).

As for Zant himself, I agree with most of what was said in this article, he did lose a lot of his bad assery during his fight. But let's not forget, he dealt the final blow to Ganondorf, self neck snap FTW!

I agree with said points; Zelda: TP has to stand as one of the most overrated games of all time.

With some of the best cutscenes up until the half-way point.

I'd really have to disagree.

Over the course of the game there was this looming feeling of a greater power. Perhaps it was just me, but there was almost a constant tension unto when Ganon would appear. And when he did finally appear, his new appearance(my personal favorite iteration) and mythical status as set up by the game, led to perhaps the most intimidating Ganon to date (albeit very disappointing in his difficulty).

Good article. Zant was looking to be a Zelda version of a sith lord, that is until the twilight palace which made Zant from Sidious to Newt Gunray.

Wow, there's a lot more hate for TP than I expected. I actually quite liked the game. Not perfect by a long shot, but not bad either. The story really irked me just because it was good up until the battle with Zant, and some of the gameplay elements were repetitive and/or frustrating, but I still had fun with it overall. Overhyped? Yes, but still far better than a lot of other games I've played.

Great article, but I disagree. I loved the early Zant like you did, and then thought it was fantastic when you see how batshit insane he is. And I freaking loved that boss battle. Sure, about 85% of it was retreading the other bosses in the game, but the little twists put on it were great. I mean, when his helm comes out of the water and opens to reveal him inside it, come on? Also, Midna obliderating him was one of the best moments in the game and genuinely shocking. Finally, as Stonedfox pointed out, though he may have technically been a puppet, he dealt the final blow to his puppetmaster.

But whatever, I'm just glad to see people talking about Zant.

i have to agree with this article. while i didn't actually think ganondorf was any less epic (he's gdorf... gdorf=epic IMO) but the boss battle with zant did nothing but annoy me.. his voice.. his movements.. it was so easy... EVERYTHING about that battle made me mad.. and he was such an AWESOME character in the beginning.. then he just turned into this... stupid thing

While I enjoyed the game, and even wrote some long post that got front-paged, I do agree: they completely destroyed any respect the character had with the boss fight. Hell, I could overlook the cutscenes, I just hated his wiggly bouncing.

I agree that they really squandered Zant, but I didn't think the clowning around at the end was stupid - I found it pretty creepy, although somewhat at odds with the calm, indifferent character he'd been for the rest of the game.

Then again, the entire last hour of Twilight Princess was just one long flush, undoing all the good of the rest of the game. I can't put into words my sheer disappointment at the ending.

Great write up!

Nothing about Zant's role dissappointed me. Your description was accurate, but there was no let down for me.

Following The Legend, I figured Zant was bound to be either
1) an alter ego/disguise of Ganondorf
2) second chair villian to Ganon's legacy of ruin

Remember Agahnim from Link to the Past? This is been in Ganon's bag of tricks for a looooong time! :) It was interesting, though, to get a pretender to the thrown this time out.

Also, as much of a chore that TP was to play, I think it adds to The Legend very well.

Great post! I love a good Zelda discussion.

I see the debate continues. I for one LOVED Twilight Princess. I can see why others don't, but I don't care to be honest. Playing through that game was a real treat for me. It was also a dream come as this is how I pictured Link in my head as I grew up with the Zelda series. Back before pixels could detail him as more than a little green blob with a white pointy thing.

As for Zant, he just reminded me of the crazy wizard that gets duped by Gannon. That theme is seen in a lot of Zelda games. Powerful wizard thinks he is king shit, and then Gannon steps in and lays the smack down on his ignorant lackey.

I see your point in the build up and let down with such a story driven game, but you can't tell me you didn't see it coming? As predictable as it was for me, I still enjoyed beating him as well as the Gannon fight, even if it was a bit too easy. But show me a Zelda game that isn't easy these days.
