Great post
Zant spent the whole game as this completely badass villain; engulfing the land in twilight, utterly humiliating powerful light spirits by waving his hands about, and almost murdering Midna.
Thats why I thought it was really interesting that when you finally confronted him, when you finally cornered him, you saw that underneath it all he was just a child, corrupted by the power given to him by Ganondorf.
So yes, he was shown as whiny and childish, having a bit of a fit about not being made king, but it showed that Ganondorf had taken advantage of his desparation for his own needs.
I felt more of a connection with Talon in OoT than I did Zelda, Midna, Zant, Ganondorf from TP.
I mean so many villains are defeated by killing them, but Zant... he got humiliated.
but then nintendo was all like "hey look gannondorf go fight yay"
Sadly, Twilight Princess itself is without doubt the worst 3D zelda game ever made, so it's not really unexpected.
Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and windwaker were far superior.
I apologize for my rant.
I agree, though, that the bait-and-switch execution was a bit sloppy, and they could have played out the whole 'corrupted child' angle much more effectively. But hey, this is Zelda, no one gives it points for its exemplary storytelling.
As for Zant himself, I agree with most of what was said in this article, he did lose a lot of his bad assery during his fight. But let's not forget, he dealt the final blow to Ganondorf, self neck snap FTW!
With some of the best cutscenes up until the half-way point.
Over the course of the game there was this looming feeling of a greater power. Perhaps it was just me, but there was almost a constant tension unto when Ganon would appear. And when he did finally appear, his new appearance(my personal favorite iteration) and mythical status as set up by the game, led to perhaps the most intimidating Ganon to date (albeit very disappointing in his difficulty).
Overall i thought TP was really cool (mainly for story & emotion) the game play felt dumbed down .
But whatever, I'm just glad to see people talking about Zant.
Then again, the entire last hour of Twilight Princess was just one long flush, undoing all the good of the rest of the game. I can't put into words my sheer disappointment at the ending.
Nothing about Zant's role dissappointed me. Your description was accurate, but there was no let down for me.
Following The Legend, I figured Zant was bound to be either
1) an alter ego/disguise of Ganondorf
2) second chair villian to Ganon's legacy of ruin
Remember Agahnim from Link to the Past? This is been in Ganon's bag of tricks for a looooong time! :) It was interesting, though, to get a pretender to the thrown this time out.
Also, as much of a chore that TP was to play, I think it adds to The Legend very well.
I see the debate continues. I for one LOVED Twilight Princess. I can see why others don't, but I don't care to be honest. Playing through that game was a real treat for me. It was also a dream come as this is how I pictured Link in my head as I grew up with the Zelda series. Back before pixels could detail him as more than a little green blob with a white pointy thing.
As for Zant, he just reminded me of the crazy wizard that gets duped by Gannon. That theme is seen in a lot of Zelda games. Powerful wizard thinks he is king shit, and then Gannon steps in and lays the smack down on his ignorant lackey.
I see your point in the build up and let down with such a story driven game, but you can't tell me you didn't see it coming? As predictable as it was for me, I still enjoyed beating him as well as the Gannon fight, even if it was a bit too easy. But show me a Zelda game that isn't easy these days.
