You've all heard the whining: Rock Band's note charts are too easy. Where are the DragonForce-like guitar licks that will crack your knuckles and melt the skin off your fingers?

Well, allow me to introduce Steely Dan's "Bodhisattva," which may very well be one of the most challenging guitar songs featured in the upcoming Rock Band 2. Don't believe me? Check out the above video of me fumbling miserably through a practice session to get an idea of what I'm talking about.

If it's not one of the most difficult, it's certainly up there. This past weekend, I sat in on a Rock Band 2 session Harmonix put together for some of the folks over at Score Hero, and I watched them run through some of the game's hardest tracks. All on Expert difficulty, of course, including what is likely one of the most challenging overall band songs in the game, Dream Theater's "Panic Attack."

What did I learn? Those guys are way better at Rock Band than I am, and Harmonix certainly isn't afraid to make a difficult game.

FUCK YEAH STEELY DAN.

It's good to know that not every hyper-difficult solo fest is a needlessly complex metal song. Jazz and Blues can be just as annoying.

I couldn't even process that "Fast Picking" part in my mind quickly enough, let alone get my fingers to do the work. Scary.

Wow they ain't fuckin around!!! On a side note, guitar hero fans will complain that the hammer-ons and pull-offs are way to hard to do in RB compared to thier beloved GH3.

Yeah, right. I'll pass on that song. I like to enjoy my games, not have them make me want to bash my console into tiny little pieces.

Darn, and I really enjoyed my Expert Guitar achievement in RB1. Looks like the same thing in RB2 might be a pipe dream.

im perplexed.

this is a rhythm music game, the goal is to enjoy music in game fashion. why would you enjoy playing an impossible combination?

whoever designed the notes in this for the game needs to get fired.

@bruceleethree:

"Hard" is not seemingly impossible, and is tough, but I'm able to get through it ... and it's kind of fun. You need to be an "expert" to play it on "expert." I think that's the point here.

It doesn't look that difficult. Then again, I suck at hitting two or more notes in a row on the same line.

Looks like a natural step up from Green Grass and High Tides. And it's also an awesome fucking song.
I know I'm looking forward to playing it.

The first part looked easily passible. The second part looked tough, but not inpossible (thank God). It just looks like one of those parts that I call "tricky". Where a part in a song looks tough, but you just have to get the "trick" to it down and it's simple. In all honesty it looked like hammer-on chords at the end.

Sweet Jesus that looks messed up.

I think the most important point to take home is that hard songs don't have to be metal songs. Personally, metal is not my favourite genre. If i liked RB or GH3 and was forced to play metal all the time, i would be an angry panda. This is kick ass. Now if i just didn't suck at this game....

Hard != Metal

I wonder if there ever will be a difficulty in rythm games for people like me. Personally I am totally comfortable with Medium on Guitar Hero, but playing on hard just kills too much of the fun for me. Instead of rocking out in front of the TV playing on hard usually ends up getting cramps in my fingers and absolutely not looking like a rock star.

I guess I could try harder, but I keep the practice sessions for my real guitars. So, hopefully one day I will see a game that adds a new difficulty in between Medium and Hard, allowing me to still freak out while hitting most of the notes (even with the fith button) at the same time.

That all looked totally doable and I'm sure those hammer-on chords are doable, but right now I have to pick my face up off the floor so I can examine it closer.

@Nick

I understand the concept that you have to be an expert to beat expert. But the expert difficulty means every note is supposed to be faithful. Then, at the discretion of the designer do they add 2-3 note chords wherever they choose to make it harder.

This is really why I prefer expert bass, more than Lead Guitar, I tend to get 88%+ on bass expert on my first play throughs of new songs. This is because I play songs I know and since expert is 100% note faithful it's no trouble.

I think the end is just hard because its something new. Hammer-on chords?!?!?! If you wanna' practice hammer-on chords before RB2 hits stores, there's always frets on fire (google it). It has hammer-on chords, so you'll be ready to kick ass at the new stuff when it arrives. Except for you, Nick, you already have the game, so you have to live with the pain... lucky bastard.

Looks really easy though I've heard the song and I know the "fast picking" is pretty extensive. Still the majority up until the fast picking looks easy and with some well timed Overdrive it looks beatable.

Now, uh, let's see Painkiller.

Ugh. I personally thought that they had the difficulty *perfect* in Rock Band. It took me weeks to finish "Green Grass and High Tides," but I was eventually able to. If I'm not with this one, then I'll be pissed.

@bruceleethree:

Harmonix usually does a pretty decent job of only putting in notes where they "belong" or where they make sense. Maybe you're thinking of another guitar game. Rock Revolution?

@brucelethree:

They haven't added notes needlessly. If you watch the secong part of the video and then listen to the actual song, you'll hear that the first up and down run is single notes, and the second up and down run is chords, just like in the chart.

Ouch, getting the expert guitar achievement is going to be a slog.

At least the song doesn't wait 8.5 minutes to get to the 'Will I or Won't I?' moment.

Nowhere near Dragonforce difficulty. If the whole song is like that maybe, but the "Fast Picking" part doesn't require you to move your fingers that much. Pause it and look at the chart.

Although looking hard, what I've seen and heard, it looks like Harmonix got it spot on.

It looks hard at first, but a few practice sessions, and any Expert player could pass it.

Difficult, yes, but "fun" difficult where the notes are actually in a logical pattern that can be mastered through a reasonable amount of practice. I like more technically challenging songs like this rather than just heavy, flailing metal chords. (*cough*RainingBlood*cough*)

The only reason that "Fast Picking" section is difficult is because it requires you to combine two different, difficult manuevers for each hand (fast strumming and fast chord changes). A little work on hand independence and it shouldn't be that impossible to pass.

Goddamn, I can't wait for this game. :D

Rather than play them as hammer-ons, just strum them out. What would make this difficult is if they were green-red and blue-orange chords, but I only saw blue-orange and yellow-blue chords up there. Just a matter of making sure you're lifting and setting the right finger and not getting your wires crossed by moving the wrong ones.
