You've all heard the whining: Rock Band's note charts are too easy. Where are the DragonForce-like guitar licks that will crack your knuckles and melt the skin off your fingers?
Well, allow me to introduce Steely Dan's "Bodhisattva," which may very well be one of the most challenging guitar songs featured in the upcoming Rock Band 2. Don't believe me? Check out the above video of me fumbling miserably through a practice session to get an idea of what I'm talking about.
If it's not one of the most difficult, it's certainly up there. This past weekend, I sat in on a Rock Band 2 session Harmonix put together for some of the folks over at Score Hero, and I watched them run through some of the game's hardest tracks. All on Expert difficulty, of course, including what is likely one of the most challenging overall band songs in the game, Dream Theater's "Panic Attack."
What did I learn? Those guys are way better at Rock Band than I am, and Harmonix certainly isn't afraid to make a difficult game.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
It's good to know that not every hyper-difficult solo fest is a needlessly complex metal song. Jazz and Blues can be just as annoying.
this is a rhythm music game, the goal is to enjoy music in game fashion. why would you enjoy playing an impossible combination?
whoever designed the notes in this for the game needs to get fired.
"Hard" is not seemingly impossible, and is tough, but I'm able to get through it ... and it's kind of fun. You need to be an "expert" to play it on "expert." I think that's the point here.
I know I'm looking forward to playing it.
I think the most important point to take home is that hard songs don't have to be metal songs. Personally, metal is not my favourite genre. If i liked RB or GH3 and was forced to play metal all the time, i would be an angry panda. This is kick ass. Now if i just didn't suck at this game....
Hard != Metal
I guess I could try harder, but I keep the practice sessions for my real guitars. So, hopefully one day I will see a game that adds a new difficulty in between Medium and Hard, allowing me to still freak out while hitting most of the notes (even with the fith button) at the same time.

That part requires overdrive. Hahah.
I understand the concept that you have to be an expert to beat expert. But the expert difficulty means every note is supposed to be faithful. Then, at the discretion of the designer do they add 2-3 note chords wherever they choose to make it harder.
This is really why I prefer expert bass, more than Lead Guitar, I tend to get 88%+ on bass expert on my first play throughs of new songs. This is because I play songs I know and since expert is 100% note faithful it's no trouble.
Now, uh, let's see Painkiller.
Harmonix usually does a pretty decent job of only putting in notes where they "belong" or where they make sense. Maybe you're thinking of another guitar game. Rock Revolution?
They haven't added notes needlessly. If you watch the secong part of the video and then listen to the actual song, you'll hear that the first up and down run is single notes, and the second up and down run is chords, just like in the chart.
At least the song doesn't wait 8.5 minutes to get to the 'Will I or Won't I?' moment.

That is all.
It looks hard at first, but a few practice sessions, and any Expert player could pass it.
The only reason that "Fast Picking" section is difficult is because it requires you to combine two different, difficult manuevers for each hand (fast strumming and fast chord changes). A little work on hand independence and it shouldn't be that impossible to pass.
Goddamn, I can't wait for this game. :D
