Far Cry 3 boasts 'ten times' the scale of Far Cry 2 photo

Far Cry 2 was a pretty big game, full of zebras and guns that jammed every two minutes. Far Cry 3 isn't going to be happy with matching that experience -- it wants to make it even bigger.

"If you look at the vistas and the scale of Far Cry 1 and 2, take that and multiply it by ten," said Ubisoft's Jason VandenBerghe in Edge magazine. "We want to take that even further. We’re focusing on taking that scale and making it dense, so that around every corner there’s something to find or see.

"That’s a key in open-world experiences. We ask ourselves: if there wasn’t anyone to shoot in the game, could it still be fun?"

Ten times the scale of Far Cry 2? That's the definition of insanity right there. Ha ha, that is a joke from E3.

Just as long as they deal with the respawning guard posts.

Oh fuck this game then. Unless they have a lot of ways to traverse the area (Biplanes. Make them) then I'm not buying it. I don't have time to go to one end of a huuuge as map in an FPS to complete fetch missions.

Also, add bears.

I'm more worried about the gameplay than the scale of the game.

Scale was one of the issues I had with FarCry 2. Well, besides the horrible stealth system, gun degredation, missions structure and the fact that everyone only exists to kill you and only you.

Just Cause 2 did scale right. It made the world humongous, but it allowed you to literally transport yourself anywhere quickly whether through the arms dealer, hijacking a heli/jet or just grappling hook+parachuting across the world at a quick pace.

Yes.

As long as you give us OTHER things to do that are not shooting anyone.

Then they are really going to have to work on the travel system. I quit playing Far Cry 2 because I was spending just as much time getting around as I did actually playing the game.

So now u spend 10 times more wasting going from then centre of the map to 1 side then back for bad missions with enemies which respawn for no reason.

I never had a problem with the guns but that being said every mission i got a new set of guns so maybe thats why, ah well.

I also quit playing FarCry2 for all the reasons everyone above me noted.

If it's the same game then count me out.

They claimed the first one was about 30km2 and the second one had a map size somewhere in the region of 50km2. So what, 500km2 for Far Cry 3?

Hmmm, generally I'm actually not that big a fan of ridiculously large open worlds. It usually means they're far more empty, and it ends up just being a lot more distance I have to cross to get to something interesting.

Still, the only thing I feel they HAVE to change, is that stupid edit they made to the voices in the last game where they took the pauses out from between each sentence the characters spoke. It made them sounds like a bunch of crazy and mentally deficient assholes.

Not really. If they have a good streaming system, it won't be more costly, no matter what the size of the world is. Same thing than with movies ; you don't need more memory to watch a longer film on Netflix because it's streamed. Content that you don't need is not loaded. Or else, Minecraft would take INFINITE CPU RESOURCES! :P

On another note, I find this a weird marketing claims, considering one of the most criticised part of Far Cry 2...

"Hey, most people told us that Far Cry 2 was boring because it was about driving around a huge world 90% of the time"
"Well, let's make the world 10 times bigger and everything will be solved" "GENIUS!"

Am I the only one who misses linear games and sees these giant overworlds as nothing but time sucks? I'm sure if you took some of these open world games and subtracted the amount of time you spent traveling from point a to b, they'd probably be pretty short

Bigger =/= better. FC >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> FC22. Sandbox games are fucking tedious and overrated. Throw some RPG stuff into the sandbox and you might have me interested, however.

really some of you are complaining about the guns degrading and respawn of guardpost guards? so realism isnt welcome now but Im sure if COD had that there would be no complaining those are good things about the 2nd game the thing they did need to fix was a better way to travel the area besides buses and vehicles

I got tired of Far Cry 2 VERY quickly. It lacked so much of what made the original so much fun. I fear that making it so much larger is only going to make things worse.

The Voice acting for that guy in the pic was incredible in the demo I saw. Probably some of the best voice acting i've ever heard in a game.

I dont know why everyone complains. I loved traveleing around in far cry 2 esp by the boat. Exploring and enjoying the pure nature.

5 things on my wishlist for far cry 3:

1. keep the safehouses/hideouts - i loved the ability to unlock weapons and the option to equip myself as i liked to

2. Respawning checkpoints yes...but not every 30 seconds so please set up the rate

3. repairing the vehicles, why not with a qte? In FC2 you were able to spend money for getting better at it but you only got faster at it. Make it a qte in 3 dificultys. Would add more thension.

4. Finaly give us that damn pretators everyone wanted since FC2!

5. Ruins, since part 3 is settlet in an asia like terrain why not exploring ancient buildings? I traveled through allot of dungeons, my axe and swords battle ready...but with an mp5...i dont think so.

A short sidenote.
In times of kinect, why not switching shooting from the hipp and with ironsight via head leaning? Also the reload could be done with a quick push from youre palm to the controller. Kinect... so much potential, wastet for the casual(tys)

While more bus stops would have been nice, travel didn't really bother me in Far Cry 2. Things like overly-fast guard respawns and enemies that could spot you from behind a bush 300 yards away were much more of an annoyance. And yet I still loved that game.

The huge scale with multiple islands sounds great, and from the demo vid it looks like stealth has received a big upgrade, so I'm very optimistic about this sequel. Definitely up there on my list of things to look forward to in 2012.

That's fine. I simply couldn't stand playing it. I'm all for beautiful lush open environments. But the game just wasn't fun to play. It wasn't fun to drive, it wasn't fun to constantly run into things that wanted your head on a stake, it wasn't fun period.

The missions were some of the most tedious crap I've ever played which is really why I stopped playing it. It and Disgaea 3 are the only two games I can't finish. Disgaea 3 mainly because I can't force myself through the grind again. Disgaea is just dead to me. Great for people who love the grinding, but I can't do it a third time.

farcry 2 was a pretty good game despite all its flaws but hey all games have flaws from halo to metal gear to gearsof war to any game, period. but it feels like Farcry3 was the sleeper hit of E3 i didnt knew about it until a couple of days after e3. i was blown away at the trailer/gameplay footage. by far one of my favorite games from e3 i cant wait to see more of it.

Agree w/Drakengard.

Also if you're going to include stealth, make it a viable option. Stealth in FC2 was BS.

I keep wanting to finish the game then I remember how slow it is getting from one point to another. Even the bus stops seem out of the way.
I think he needs a little gyro-copter, little bird or something if the map is going to be huge.
Also the inhabitants of the world need a reason to exist of than wait fit me to show up. Maybe more faction skirmishes you could chose to either ignore or take part in.

eckers569: The game has many downfalls, I don't deny that. But it is one of the best openworld shooters I have ever played; even with it's issues.

They made stealth a little better with subsequent updates, and also upped the checkpoint respawn timer (not enough, though), and made it so enemies can't see you from half a mile away.

If you like really immersing yourself in to a game, FC2 is one of the best.
