Far Cry 2 will run the same on console and PC ... seamlessly? photo
     FarCry

Yesterday, I led a war band of UK Destructoid members to Wembley Stadium for Play.com's "Live" event. The day was an absolute flop, but an unannounced extra was at the show and proved to be a highlight -- a walkthrough demo for Far Cry 2 with the team.

The demo, in which designer Peter Redding attempted to show us the game in action before the PC crashed (seriously, poor guys), showed off the 50 square kilometer game world. We know it was that big because he said 50 square kilometers more times than I've ever heard it said before. After we saw a very beautiful game world with some pretty cool gun play, they accidentally got themselves killed and we had an impromptu Q&A, where Redding dropped a rather interesting claim.

Apparently, the game will not be "better" on PC than on consoles, as Redding promises the games will be pretty much equal across the board. He also promised a near seamless experience, unlike Oblivion, which Redding said has a several times smaller game world than Far Cry 2's.

Unfortunately, they shunted us out after their technical difficulties, but at least we go to record that rather heady boast. Far Cry 2 is said to be just as good on consoles as on PC, and the game world is almost seamless, save one concession where the world is split into a northern and southern area.

Ambitious goals? Unrealistic hopes? We will have to wait and see. What I can say, however, is that the game at least looks gorgeous on PC so far. The consoles have their work cut out for them.

Cheeburga beat me to the punch. :(

Either they've going to sacrifice distant detail on the PC, or the console versions are going to be slideshows. It doesn't help that from the demonstrations Far Cry 2 looks to make Crysis's requirements look like Solitaire.
If they actually pull if off, making it run well and look good on all three/both platforms (Is it coming out on PS3 and 360, or just one or the other?), I'll be amazed. So far, most publishers can't even pull that shit off just porting between the 360 and PS3, let alone the vastly different focused PC standard hardware.

If those claims are true I will be impressed. It will be a big change considering how mediocre I thought the previous Far Cry iterations were on the consoles. The first Xbox game (Instincts) was enjoyable, but the quality declined from there until it hit the ultimate low-point in Wii's Vengeance.

I'm pretty sure Nvidia pays Crytek big bucks behind the scenes to make absolutely sure 95% of the pc's on the market can't run their games, in order to drive video card sales.

Its gonna suck on console. It will probably be dropped down in quality and run at a locked 25 fps

Hoping it works well on the consoles considering my rig probably couldn't even play the intro to this game.

PUCK FORTS! Devs really should just keep the game complex, and put it on Steam. If the quality goes up over time, so will saless. Translation: FUCK PORTS!

If only I had some sort of rig that was could run such a high-quality game, possibly a rig with some sort of artwork from a video game set on speculative history of WWII.

*ahem*

I agree, Farcry 2 was definitely the highlight of a rather disappointing day. It was nice to see some of the Destructoid team in person too. I hope that you wasn't hanging around at the station for too long though guys, it was seriously cold.

What is the point of a "larger than oblivion" game world? If i play FC2, i'll want to gun down/set traps/unleash feral abilities on people, not wander around for three hours in a random direction with nothing but forest animals for company.

Yes, I fully agree that a 360 will surely be equal to my 3500$ PC in terms of, well, everything.

YA until the pc guys use there better GPU's to turn up the RES and AA/AF higher than the consoles.

oh and they have a mouse so it automatically is better by 1000 times. even if it looks bad it's still better with a mouse.

The biggest Levels on Lair were 32x32 miles, 20,000 feet high, and ran at 1080p, 60 fps if I'm not mistaken. The game ran smooth with a little hitch here and there, but given the amount of detail and things going on it was definitely excusable, so I can see Far Cry going on consoles (also 32x32 miles... but for the entire game) especially the PS3 since the PS3 has already proven it is possible.

Hey pal, not everybody wants to buy a $5000 PC. Ports aren't going to hurt you if you know which version you're going to play. Let everybody else have fun, mkay?

Honestly, I don't see how this is possible. FC2 looks just as good as Crysis (sometimes better) and they said they could never do Crysis on consoles. Did they just get better at porting all of a sudden?

It looks awesome on the PC. If they can match it on the 360, then good for them. And for me.

if you are paying $5000 for a pc you deserve to be dragged out to the open savanna depicted in fc2 and trampled to death by rampaging wildabeest.

I’m also skeptical about this. Looks damn good though! Farcry was and is much better to play than Crysis.

I saw the demo for Far Cry 2 and I don't see what the problem would be for this to run on the 360 and PS3 well. Probably will look better on full graphics on a top of the range PC though.

I thought the event on a whole was quite enjoyable. It wasn't anything like some of the events you see in America or Japan, but considering we have nothing else in the UK like this, and this was Play.com's first attempt, I thought it went ok. Maybe a bit poorly organised at times, but beggars can't be choosers.

As long as they treat each platform as if it were the only platform they were developing on, it's possible. Whether or not it's a goal worth working toward, is another story.

Just my opinion kiddo, PC gaming is shit, waste all the money you want on your machine, you're still playing the same damn genres over and over, they just look really pretty.

Enjoy your FPS, MMO's and RTS games, its all the PC market seems to be good for.

Fixed. If all you think PC gaming has to offer is those three genres, then you've obviously haven't been doing your homework.
