Fans making Starfox game; Will Nintendo pull a Microsoft?

5:33 PM on 01.14.2007, World Famous 23 comments

     Mods
If history has taught us anything, it is that this fan-made StarFox game in the making may not ever see the light of day by way of threatening letters from a pack of rabid Nintendo lawyers. But, in the meantime, we might as well bask in the dream before it could be crushed to a creamy pulp. Check out the site here and as you see, you got the video above. Good luck guys, we'll keep our fingers crossed for ya!

Unfortunately the way the law works pretty much requires Nintendo to sic rabid lawyers on these guys or risk losing the copyright on Star Fox. Not like they've done much good with it since the n64, although the DS one was pretty decent.

Oh, those big companies are such assholes for holding up their copyrights! They should all be beaten!

The problem there is not their rights - it's the fact that they manage to make shitty games out of their good franchises and, at the same time (as if that trick wasn't impressive enough), they are not kind to their devoted fans (especially those that are competent enough to do better then them).

All in all, it makes sense. But anyway, those guys deserve some merit for their achievement.

I can't remember, did Nintendo ever go after the guys who remade Ocarina of Time in the top-down style of Link to the Past?

It would make more sense if these guys just released a Star Fox clone rather than actually basing it on the characters. Then they could release it without worrying about legal action.

That looks really sweet, as long as the people making the game arent selling it, Nintendo wouldn't have much of a legal case.

It _would_ make more sense, but teams behind these kind of projects care more about e-penis than money.

why not release the game as non-Star Fox and then later release a Star Fox mod anonymously.

@ CaffeinePowered:

Actually, they would. 20th Century Fox was so notorious for doing just that that the term ""foxed" was coined in their honor. Free mods like the Aliens TC for Quake (and more recently the Halo RTS Summa mentioned) can be construed as unfair competition when the rights holders are planing on releasing their own games.

If the team is lucky, Nintendo might just ignore them. But if the project starts getting a big enough buzz, chances are they'll get squashed.

Doesn't look particularly good. It's too dark to see anything, and I don't see any example of gameplay. If that is gameplay, it's confusing as fuck. And they're best off just dropping the trademarked names, modifying the style a bit, and making an homage game. However this doesn't seem like a Star Fox game at all.

There have been numerous other Nintendo fan games in the past, and I don't believe any of them took heat from Nintendo to do a cease and desist. Nintendo isn't so harsh like Square-Enix is about fan games, and I doubt they'll be changing their policies regarding them. Of course, if the team gets a cease and desist, they could just "rebrand" the entire game, and keep the same gameplay.

I wish more big companies could be cool about these kinds of things, like Vivendi (eventually) was with The Silver Lining.

i know this mod.

it's based on the (now) open source freespace 2, one of the best space simulators. This mod has been in construction for a while, i think it's almost finished...

They should spend time making a Star Control fan game, instead. The original developers say they are cool with that kind of stuff.

Yeah, Assault was terrible. Freespace 2 engine FTW. Hope it doesn't get canned.

They need to fire whomever is dong the music for it. That's one of the worst orchestral compositions I've ever heard.

Oh well, it's not likely that the game will survive too much longer anyway. Now that the intertubes are aware of it, the Big Guy will come shut it down.

Why doesn't he sell it to Nintendo so that they both profit?

If these guys aren't making money off the product, Nintendo can't do shit about it. Though I agre they should sell it to nintendo, or become a second-party studio.
