The introductory sequence from Final Fantasy VII has been remade by a team using Epic's freely available Unreal Development Kit, showcasing what a remade FFVII might look like if Square Enix ever did it. Except, to be brutally honest, it wouldn't look quite so creepy as this.
Choppiness and weirdness aside, the video has turned a few heads today and been doing the rounds among the usual videogame news sources. It was actually posted at the end of November, but I guess late's better than never.
Let's be honest though. It doesn't look ... good. I mean, it's totally better than anything I'd ever make, but still ... let's just leave Final Fantasy VII alone, yeah?

No, no, no... Shut this project down NOW!!!!
Before Square Enix sees it and gets it into their idiot heads that we actually WANT FF7 remade as a first-person shooter!
Ugh, if they had left the first perspective out of it, it might have been better. Also, these guys need to get the physics of animation down first.
If Square-Enix does a remake, I hope it's just from the graphics perspective (and tweak the battle and storage system a bit) and not an amalgamation of "stuff." I don't understand why they'd need to change anything else; other Final Fantasy's have had remakes and were successful.
Wow... I uh, wow. looked like bad photoshop when the guns were firing. Odd thing is, it looks like they spent more time on boob physics then they did anything else. And for the love of Odin, why does Cloud's hair glow? This is not Dragon Ball.... *facepalm*
@gwendolyn:
Other FFs have been remade, true, but they were on a totally other scope. The sprite-based games were either very low-poly or simply upgraded with higher resolution sprites.
If they were to remake FF7, they would be expected to make it with the same production values as recent FF games, which would mean a huge investment and a lot of workers.
That's a hard decision to make when they already have so many projects going, they don't have much left over to spend.
David Brent dancing was less awkward than that. You know, I'm not completely opposed to an FFVII remake, but I'd want it to be nothing more than swapping out the blocky overworld models and maybe smoothing out the prerendered backgrounds and battle scenes. Nothing more.
As much as I want FF7 to be remade (well, it still looks pretty good when I play it on my Go, and yes, I bought it on the PS Store on day one), can the fans please try not to remake it? This looks absolutely horrible, and first person? I liked seeing my Chibi characters, thank you very much. Yeah, there are FF7 maniacs that remember every line of dialogue, including minor ones, but the fans are not always correct. And no matter how much Square Enix has fuc*ed up the FF franchise this Gen, I have the utmost confidence that they are the only ones who will be able to remake it perfectly.
If there were a possibility of it turning out anything remotely as awful as this, I would kindly thank Square Enix for refusing to remake this game. Integrity where it counts.
I don't know why people want one so badly. I tried to play it the other day after not touching it for several years, and the gameplay does not hold up. It's a lot clunkier than I think you all remember.
People, this is NOT a prototype, It's all there is, and is made as a way of learning to use the Unreal engine. They are not trying to remake the full game, just somehow recreate the initial scene as a learning demo
I don't know why people worship FFVII like it came out of Jesus' ass or something. I love FFVII, it has great aesthetics and a unique setting with good characters. On the other hand, it has VERY outdated gameplay and graphics. If a remake were to happen I would buy it, not because I want to replace the original, but as a companion piece to it. This happens all the time in the film world, and guess what? Sometimes remakes turn out BETTER than the originals. John carpenter's The Thing? Yeah remake of an old 50's movie. I'm not talking about a cash-grab remake like Hollywood does now, but a loving recreation. Sure, it might turn out badly, but that's why the originals still available. We don't lose anything.
For a small team, this is not BAD. They need to change the camera to Third person and work on it. This could work if they team up with a better/Bigger group of Modders
I thought it looked pretty good for something that a small group of people did on the side. Except for the Tifa model, which looked disturbingly like one of those life-sized sex dolls.
For all those idiots wondering why it is in first person it is becuase they are using the unreal development kit, which has first person as the default setting. But most of you would have no idea what goes into making games or development kits in general would you.
Heh :p it's a pretty cool hack at it for sure, clearly the people involved aren't exactly animators or texture artists and the textures kinda look ripped from Crisis Core or Dirge of Cerberus, that and they really could've done well adding some dynamic lights, specular/normals to the materials, and some post processing, maybe add some trilinear filtering alongside 16x anisotropic and a few other tweaks but yeah, call me impressed and I wish I could have a play around with their assets used to construct this. :>
Considering this was made by just a couple of diehard fanboys I think it's quite impressive. This isn't an actual thing that's happening, just a "What if?", so calm down.

Squalia!
At this point I would rather leave FFVII alone as it is. No up-res re-release money grabs, no forced awkward remakes.
Let the old game age gracefully in peace.
