Fan made Star Fox project looks pretty amazing photo

Star Fox: Shadows of Lylat is a fan made Star Fox project that has been in the works for six years now. Six years is a long time for a fan project but there’s a lot on offer here. Space and ground missions, co-op, multiplayer, a deep storyline, massive enemies to much more. Plus, the game looks amazing.

Shadows of Lylat seems to be exactly like the kind of sequel we should have gotten in the first place. Not some stupid game with dinosaurs (Star Fox Adventures) and not that game with the really horrible voice-over work (Star Fox Assault). No word on a release date but you can find out more info over on the game's Web site.

Hit the break to check out the trailer. How's it looking to you?

To everybody who says it looks shit, I think you need to open your eyes, go to Specsavers and come back. If you don't like it, fuck off. Lol.

Morons! This is Nintendo! They NEVER shut down fan projects, end of story! Think of all the insane Mario hacks that have come out over the past years and chill out!

Someone just needs to STFU and stop complaining about comments in a comments section of DTOID article.

Looks great, too bad Nintendo is going to eventually call out the dogs on them and take away 6 years of hard work.

Every time Nintendo closes down one of these, I buy less of their games.

So yeah, I haven't bought a nintendo game in some time.

@Zippyduda

Everyone just needs to STFU and stop complaining and be happy someone's going to the effort instead of thinking it will get shut down.

Counterpoint: Why should I bother to get my interest and hopes up over something that almost assuredly is going to be shut down now that they've gone and prematurely announced their existence?

If this doesn't end up getting canned by Nintendo, then good for those guys, but I'm not going to care all that much about this until it's actually released and isn't just a trailer. And even if they don't get shut down by Nintendo, there's no guarantee at all that this won't simply stagnate and die like so many other promising looking fan projects in the past.

I've never bothered to get worked up about unreleased fan projects ever since the old Ghostbusters Quake project got killed, some time back in the early 18th century or so.

@Magnalon

Think of all the insane Mario hacks that have come out over the past years and chill out!

Because most of them are just shitty rom hacks, or shittier flash games, that nobody really gives a fuck about anyway?

Well, except for this one. Does anyone have any idea what's going on with that one? Did they get FOXed, or did the project just stagnate and die? The wiki link in that old-ass Destructoid article (so old that the comments are gone) is broken and their forums seem to be all but dead, so it seems to be the latter.

@Peteru, so I'm not allowed to put these doubters in there place am I? Even though a member linked me this story on the Forums, so I sent it to Hamza.

If it wasn't for me I doubt you'd know about this, so shush. Read Mag's comment.

Great, now that you are reporting on it, Nintendo will catch wind of it and shut it down. Way to go, guys.

Also, Star Fox Adventures was a great game.

@Im OK, stop being such a negative nancy! I don't think they will shut it down. Never heard of them shutting a project down.

You too Dex.

I don't see how Nintendo have any ground here, they could just change the name. However, it's free, runs on a different engine for a start. I'm sure the code will get released at some point.

I'm not only talking about the ROM hacks (some of them are big-time), but the myriad of other ground-up Mario and Zelda projects that, I'm pretty sure I saw in an interview once, Nintendo said "helps their brand".

If it's fan-made, and they aren't selling it, why can Nintendo shut it down? I don't understand. It's effectively like fan art, except much more difficult and time consuming to create.

@Zippyduda

Sorry for getting your knickers all twisted. Sheesh.

They'd have to do more than change the name. They'd have to remove all the references to Star Fox and art assets. You know, like the logo... on the side of the Great Fox... the design for which is pretty much lifted straight from the official games. You don't see how Nintendo has any grounds here? Really?

Sure, they could totally change all that stuff and still have a game, but then it wouldn't be a Star Fox game anymore, and then what would be the point? The only reason this is getting the attention that it is right now is because OMG STAR FOX!!!11~`11!

Look, I'm hoping that this doesn't get FOXed, just like most everyone else. I'm just saying that the likelihood for that to happen is high, just like most everyone else, so I'm not going to get all happy and out-of-hand over this.

@Magnalon

The fact that I've never heard of any of those projects seems to indicate that they're intelligently keeping a relatively low profile and aren't being announced to the world by being featured on Destructoid's front page like this Star Fox thing is. If and when they do get featured here or elsewhere in a similar manner, I would say that the likelihood for those projects to get canned will have become significantly higher, just as it is now for this Star Fox thing.

With 6 years of development, I hope they will release some kind of final product. Hopefully they put in a basic multiplayer mode that can be released early, since I think that the problem with a lot of PC mods is that they get stuck making a big story or a total conversion (Goldeneye Source), while forgetting that interest wanes when updates are intermittent.

"Release Date: Whenever it's done." is a fair thing to say at first, but after a few years, it begins to sound more like an excuse to procrastinate.

Isn't this how Ghostbusters came to be, a fan-made project that proved to be pretty incredible,and thus was made so?

Frankly, I don't see how Nintendo could C&D them--if it's being distro'd for free after they're finished and not profiting at all from it, it falls under a fair-use clause. I do a comic strip based on a very popular TV series and three years later, it's still going strong, because I include disclaimers that the characters belong to the network/production company and I'm merely producing a parody that does not defame the show in any way, nor am I profiting from it..

Nintendo isn't fan-hating Square after all. I mean, I already brought up Mother 3. I understand that NoA isn't particularly kind to the Earthbound fans and whatnot, but the translation was essentially a ROMhack, and most people who played it didn't buy the game. And they (Nintendo) had all the time in the world to shut it down.

And they didn't. You could argue that they were doing a lot of the work for Ninty, what with translating and everything, but there's no way to buy Earthbound or Mother 3 in a way that gives Nintendo money (currently). There'd be no interest at all financially. Perhaps in the future if, say, there was a Mother Compilation for the DS, but we know Nintendo isn't THAT nice. =P

@Solid Squirrel: People are afraid that something like this is gonna get shut down after the horrific knee-jerk Square pulled on Crimson Echoes. Not only did they C&D, they essentially banned any future ROM hacks, any research into the game, and pretty much eliminated the entire fan mod community for that game. It wasn't done the same way as this--it's a modification of already established and copyrighted code--but people are still afraid right now that anyone else can freak out and do as Square did.

I think they may be safe given how this isn't a hack of any kind (but that didn't stop Square with Chrono Resurrection, did it?).

For a fan project this looks pretty good.

The truth of it is Nintendo haven't produce a decent Starfox game in many years, the last good ones being the N64 version (awesome) and the recent DS version. GC and WIi have the good to make another good Starfox game, but Nintendo aren't willing.

I think as a fan project it could get a pass, especially if its going for free, and once interest in it is built up amongst, perhaps Nintendo might think about an offical new Strafox game. Nintendo are so laced in casual games, that they forget what hardcore people want

There is another option, which is that the devs could submit it for a Wii Ware release, and if tweaked by Nintendo with their approval, Nintendo could take a cut of the funds, keeping everyone happy. We get a new Starfox game and everyone is happy. Make it clear its a fan homage production, and hopefully keep the lawyers out of it.

Besides, it makes no sense suing you fanbase. Sometimes, a bit of understanding goes a long way.
