First the good news -- the previously mentioned Resident Evil 4 Wii remake leaked by retailers has been confirmed by Famitsu. Not surprisingly, Wii remote functionality has been added. Players will be able to aim with the Wii remote; reload by holding B and shaking the controller; and wave the controller without holding B to swing your knife. The game will also contain the extra Ada missions from the PlayStation 2 version of the game, as well as a trailer for the upcoming Umbrella Chronicles. Speaking of which, this is where the "meh" news comes in. It appears that the Wii "original" Resident Evil title, Umbrella Chronicles, will be a first-person gun shooter on (wait for it) rails. There will be no free movement (other than occasionally choosing your path), with the game focused entirely on shooting. The game will detail the fall of Umbrella Corp., and will include most main characters previously seen in the series. In preparation for this potential disaster, gamers can feel free to pick up a copy of the PlayStation 2 game, Resident Evil: Dead Aim, for under twenty dollars at their local pawn shop. [Update: I added some more Famitsu scans for your viewing pleasure. Just clean up after yourselves.]

So is it going to be on rails like Killer 7 was on rails?
i don't mind an on rails shooter if its fun.
as for RE4, i don't think i need to play it again.
Oh, just fuckin KILL ME NOW. Ive been waiting months, and frothing at the mouth, for this new "fill in the story gaps" Resident Evil game, and this is what theyre givin me.... They didnt have the balls to tell us its another dead aim in the first place? Why bother? get back to work on Res5 and dont slap my face with this Rail-shooter crap.
RE4 remake for wii, they already have it it's the 20 dollar gamecube version
only RE people care about now is RE5
I"ll buy it on Wii if it's 20 bucks. Which it probably won't be.
I too will play the shooter on rails if it's fun.
As a big RE fan, I can take a lot of punishement. I'll probably buy it.
House of the dead... anyone?
JamesSorensen
I am a RE person and I care about the release of these 2 games. Still cautious of RE4Wii but Umbrella COULD be good.
Pucho:
I'd buy House of the Dead before I'd buy RE:UC. Bring it on...

Wasn't there someone on this site or another that was calling for House of the Dead or ANY "light gun" game to be released on the Wii?
And now we have a bumped up version of one (light gun games usually dont let you control where you go), we complain and bicker about it...SWEET!
I'm a huge fan of the Arcade style FPS Rail Shooters. It was the best part of Raving Rabbids, and an entire game based around that sounds fucking awesome. I played through House of the Dead on dreamcast atleast 100 times, same goes for the sequel.
You just got me more excited for the game. Hopefully it has like 5 difficulty settings. The only thing that would dissapoint me is if they only have like 5-8 levels in it. I need atleast 10 to really make me happy about spending $50 on it.
As for RE4Wii, I'll probably get that as well, as long as it is not $50 I got it on playstation, but never finished it. With the Wiimote for aiming, I am now a lot more interested.
potential disaster? Time crisis 1, 2, 3 was on rails. Rebel Assault 2 was on rails. Starfox was on rails. House of the Dead 1, 2, 3 was on rails. Virtua Cop series was on rails. Silent Scope series was "on rails". Hell, I'm snorting rails right now. Viva la rails!
You know, I was just thinking today
"You know what I'd love to play on my Wii?"
House of the Dead 15764
FUCK!!!!
Bahamut:
And those games were fun for about a half an hour. See where I'm going with this? Rails. Meh. Light gun games. Meh.
I'll take it a step further than Nick. This won't be a light gun game. The Wii-mote does not point where you point, necessarily. It moves like a mouse. There will be a need for a reticule onscreen to see where you're pointing, and aiming the Wiimote is nothing like aiming a real- or light- gun.
I'm not gonna blame them for trying. Maybe they'll surprise me. But, I doubt it.
You know what will be hilarious? When the Wii port of RE4 comes out looking worse than the Gamecube version.
Looks worse than Gamecube? There is no logic there...someone just trying to bash?
Brandon:
That's impossible. The Wii is two GameCube duct taped together. That's double the power.
Hopefully, RERails will force devs to focus on the aiming, and make it fluid and intuitive, instead of tacked on. If RE can make some improvements in the controls dept., maybe it will turn out to be fun after all.
Yeah, I know. I was just bashing. Kinda. The Wii has disappointed me so bad it hurts my heart, but that comment definitely was not meant to be taken seriously.
I like the way you pluralize GameCube. As in: A gaggle of GameCube. Nice.
I say fuck off with ports already.
OK guys I know you're hurting. I'm hurting too although it hurts even more to admit it. The wii kind of sucks right now. but I am an optimist. The DS sucked for a long time before good proper "DS" games came out that weren't shite (as opposed to GBA ports etc). But I take solace in the fact that there are going to be at least four or five console-worthy titles that will make me glad to have picked up the system. I'd have bought it for smash brothers and SMB Galaxy alone. and I'm sure there are going to be great UNIQUE surprise titles we could never imagine coming. (rhythm aciton games anyone?) And think about this - the Wii2 with better controls and 3D holographics will come out before the PS3 turns a profit.
What the! RE4 started in the gamecube, why cant they get it to work in the Wii? what were they thinking?
Bad capcom bad!
Azrael...what did you say?
I am confused...
"Umbrella Chronicles, will be a first-person gun shooter on (wait for it) rails."
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!
To my knowledge, it was never officially announced that Umbrella Chronicles will be on rails.
I think Destructoid has pulled a Joystiq and turned rumor into fact.
Shame on you guys, shame on you..
After spending time with Rayman Raving Rabbids on Wii and their on rails shooter I'm not disappointed in the slightest. That Rayman mini-game is one of the best "feeling" games that uses the motion control on Wii. Anyone else check it out yet? It's surprisingly awesome as hell.
I will give it a rent before to turn on the hateraid. but still that is not a ture RE game damit.
This article is based off of info from the latest issue of Famitsu, not rumors, tehArtist.

True RE game? What is a true RE game? Wasn't there some people saying that RE4 (before it came out) wasn't a true RE game cause of the new viewing angle?
A TRUE RE game is a survival horror game where there are a bunch of zombies and other mutated creatures that our out to eat you or what not, and you run around with a knife and some guns for some action and puzzles thrown in to break up all the action.
So aslong as it has puzzles and zombies and creatures, it will be an RE game, just a different view.
sounds good to me
Summa, there is that Silent Hill arcade game!
But I've played Silent Hill 1 & 2, I'd buy at least SH2 on Wii but that won't happen.
Pucho:
Hey man have you noticed how dickgirls should get their own board on 4chan??
And wow, the new pope looks like Emperor Palpatine!
I'm in.
And it chronicles Umbrella's downfall? Double in.
fuck, No more current-gen ports, I know RE4 kicks ass, but If it wasn't for Zelda Wii wouldn't be shit right now.
I hated RE 1, 2, 3, CVX, Dead Aim, Survivor, Outbreak
RE4 is one of my favorite games ever
I'm guessing I won't like RE:UC and that makes me sad.
Nick Brutal, so you can translate perfect Japanese?
Er... Dead Aim wasn't an on-rails shooter. It was pretty much like any other RE game except to shoot shit you switch to a first person view. I really didn't mind it too much. I enjoyed it.
But in my opinion, Capcom better be careful. On-rails shooter with zombies just screams "House of the Dead clone", and people will play it expecting it to be. Capcom is gonna have to deliver the replayability of the HotD series, seeing as on-rail shooters tend not to be too long.
Oh.. and the RE4 port is awesome.
Actually looking more at the screenshots, I'm even more pumped about Umbrella Chronicles than I was an hour ago.
Playing RE1 first person style? Kickass.
And if the other rumors are true (that it does the same for the other games in the series, and includes a new chapter that occurs between CVX and RE4), you could call this UBER kickass.
Blindside: Dont you guys get it!?
THIS IS the rumored Resident Evil game for the Wii! there wont be Resident Evil 5 for the Wii! only this piece of crap!
There's nothing wrong with an on-rails shooter. I'm sure it will provide some good, clean fun.
Silent Hill on the Wii, wouldn't that be a dream come true!
Or Fatal Frame, even better! The camera thing would work really well.
If it's fun to play, I'm totally down with a RE rails shooter. I love the House of the Dead series. I'll probably end up getting the RE4 wiimake, since I never got around to finishing the game on the cube anyway.
A TRUE RE game is a game where you desperately fear your enemies, run away from them whenever possible, feel a great sense of relief when they are finally all killed, and will stay in a safe room not only because the music is nice, but because you actually are afraid to leave the room and face the potential death that lies around ever turn.
An on rails shooter cannot provide that. It just can't.
I'm not saying RE:UC will be a bad game, but just like you couldn't make a James Bond movie where James Bond is a overwieght Doctor Who fan with no car and no social skills, you can't make a good RE game on rails. On rails games are all about wanting more enemies on screen, wanting to interact with them, waiting desperately for more enemies to show up, loving the myriad of possibilities provided to shoot as many as you can as fast as you can.
RE games are all about the exact opposite experience. Desperately wanting to stay as far away from enemies as possible, dreading the fact that they may be lurking around every corner, fearing for your own survival.
I mean, just think about the way you felt when you first saw your character get repearedly bitten by a zombie in an RE game. Or the first time you saw your character decapitated in a RE game, be it by a chainsaw wielding manias, some fast running, high jumping freak of nature, or any of the other head removers from the series past. It was scary. It made you actually fear those enemies, fear playing the game.
How can they give you that feeling in an on rails shooter, where the only evidence that your character has been hurt is a flash on the screen, a grunt sound effect, and a reduction on your health meter?
They can't.
On rails and RE just don't work together. History has proven this. Capcom is making a ridiculous mistake.
That is why we RE fans are so dissappointed with this news.
Well, you have to be open to new experiences. I'm sure that the game will be FUN, no matter if it perfectly recreates the experience of RE games of the past.
True, but why call give it the RE name if it doesn't have the essence of RE at heart.
All the past RE games that rejected the core elements of RE have failed. They have not been original enough to be interesting, but not RE enough to please fans of the series.
I hope the game is good on it's own merits, but I can't help but be dissapointed that this is the big RE:Wii game that's been hyped all this time.
What if Napoleon Dymanite had been named James Bond, and the movie was titled Casino Royale. It still would have been a funny movie, popular with a lot of people, but James Bond fans would not have been amused.
That's more or less how I feel about this game.
It could have been first person. That would have been different, but still possibly could have worked. But on rails? From a game design stand point, I just don't see how it could fit the series.
Wouldn't you say that RE4 rejected the core elements of the RE series? It was a pretty big leap. And I'd say that it is the best one yet.
But for the most part, I agree with you. I'm definitely disappointed about the news. I'm still looking forward to playing the game and seeing how they pull it off. It's better than nothing.
Those scans confirmed everything I was hoping. Slashing in QTEs with your wiimote. I hope you have to stab el gigante's hand too.
As for the on the rails thing. Hey, it might be good. They might have learnt from their mistakes.
