Even though the PSP has been outselling the Nintendo Wii in Japan these past couple of weeks, and the country doesn't seem to be digging No More Heroes that much, at least they're excited about something Wii related.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl has been given a perfect 40/40 score from Famitsu. According to Game|Life, the reviewers dig the Final Smash super moves and the lengthy single-player mode. If you want to get a look for yourself, NeoGAF shares the love in the form of scans.
This is good news for Nintendo in Japan, just as it was for The Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker when they recieved the same score in the past. That's not to mention Nintendogs recieving the same score for some unknown reason.
I don't think anyone doubts big things for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Are you expecting perfection?

It's fucking JAPAN.
Shocking.
40/40 = BS unless this game comes with a free blowjob.
I don't get why people can't see otherwise.
Bitch.
They'll give a 10 to anything Nintendo or Square pumps out now adays
OMG! holy shit, how dare i compare SSB with other figthing games?
i couldn't care less if it's a "core" fighting game or not, i find it boring and little more than a collection of semi amusing cameos.
i am however excited about the inclusion of darth vader in the new SC game. why? because it's a great character inserted into one of the most fluid and intuitive combat systems ever concieved. this is something that every fighting game, core or not needs to stand up to, and my guess is that SSB will not.
Wow, that just blows my mind, its not like Famitsu has ever given a Nintendo game a perfect score, guess Brawl really will be good.
The worst part about this how the fanboys will use it as a blanket, most of them knew that Brawl would be good, but now they have number they can toss in people's faces about the greatness of their game, even if 90% don't read japanese and are merely going by score.
Besides, any magazine that gives fucking Nintendogs a perfect score is utter failure printed on glossy paper.
In any case, I'm pumped for Brawl. I am expecting perfection, and then some.
I prefer fighting games like Smash Bros and DBZ as opposed to all-your-acronyms.
I also can't wait to fail out of college due to this game.
Seriously, Famitsu reviews are about as credible as Gamespot reviews, and anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't know anything about Famitsu. Have a read:
http://forums.selectbutton.net/viewtopic.php?t=476
I do believe that there are four separate reviews, all 1/10. The four are combined for the 40 total you see here.
I am anticipating Brawl, but I do agree that Famitsu has as much journalistic integrity as a hemorrhaged raccoon with rabies.
I've no doubt Smash will be good--great even! But... Famitsu has always seemed biased to me.
I don't really care about review scores on this game, though. Last generation I played SSBM more than any other game; and I've got a really good feeling it will be the same with Brawl.
::facepalm::
That's just awful.
Apologies for the double post. Firefox is a process whore.
I do love how people will come into these comments sections and talk when they have no idea what they're even saying.
Exhibit A:
Klytus: "Button mashing, Perfected!"
^-- Never actually played a SSB title. Apparently.
Exhibit B:
psycho_terror: (And I'm paraphrasing here,) [goddamnit, those oranges are horrible tasting apples.]
i certainly know what i'm saying thanks, obviously you do not.
i'm say it's apples to apples, if you want to call SSB an orange go ahead, but it's a fighting game to me - it doesn't offer a lot more than that.
Wii: +5
Mario: +10
Not a "minigame" game on the Wii: +40
It's easy to see why it got 40 when you think about
Coincidentally, that's the amount of time it takes to realize there's very little to the game. Even the single player bits are very boring.
I'm not so sure that it's coincidental that one of Nintendo's spokesperson said a while back in which they said that there is no future in games with depth. In my opinion it just seems as though Nintendo is incapable of creating games with depth and this is proof.
The fact that Famitsu is giving it a high score just points to a heavy Japanese bias.
And whoever says that Smash Bros is a button mashing game is insane, just try button mashing. We'll all be laughing while you appear to be having an epileptic fit.
Smash brothers offers vastly more than other fighters. Why? Short story, control. Long story, skill in Smash brothers is more focused on the player and the mind games he can play as button inputs apart from the aforementioned wavedashing are somewhat simple. So instead of worrying that I've incorrectly hit the combo and my shoryuken won't land properly, I'm a lot more focused on whether Down B is actually the right move for the situation and the manner in which my opponent will react to this.
This method of fighting is really quite different to most of your generic fighters, yes the abrieviations do have associated mind games, but what is street fighter except, jump in, attempt to do a combo, hope they don't uppercut you. In fact, if you look closely you can see that SF4 is beginning to follow the same path as Smash has.
I'm not looking for a fight or anything, but from my experience, button mashing doesn't work. I will go as far to even say that button mashing works better in other fighters because often times, all of your attacks are directed at your opponent - you don't have to chase people or turn around to direct your attacks.
I really don't care about the reviews of the game. 40/40 = whatever. Unless it gets extremely low scores from many media outlets, I'm going to buy it anyway. And I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case for many people.
saying you can button mash, and saying you don't have to chase people or direct attacks in other fighting games is like saying you don't know how to play other fighting games. trying to play SF or SC like that against somebody with any kind of skill will get your ass kicked immediately (no doubt this is true of SSB also).
whatever natural 20 was trying to say (using mind games, choosing the right attack instead of doing the same one over and over) simply leads me to believe that either SSB is for people that can't play other fighting games, or that as i have already stated, SSB is not unique or special and should be treated as any other beat 'em up.
