Famitsu gives Super Smash Bros. Brawl 40/40 photo

Even though the PSP has been outselling the Nintendo Wii in Japan these past couple of weeks, and the country doesn't seem to be digging No More Heroes that much, at least they're excited about something Wii related.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl has been given a perfect 40/40 score from Famitsu. According to Game|Life, the reviewers dig the Final Smash super moves and the lengthy single-player mode. If you want to get a look for yourself, NeoGAF shares the love in the form of scans.

This is good news for Nintendo in Japan, just as it was for The Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker when they recieved the same score in the past. That's not to mention Nintendogs recieving the same score for some unknown reason.

I don't think anyone doubts big things for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Are you expecting perfection?

Highly anticipated Japanese game is well-received by the Japanese?

GG, SF, SC, VF > SSB

40/40 = BS unless this game comes with a free blowjob.

I don't get why people can't see otherwise.

I expect perfection plus infinity... this game is the reason I waited 2 days in line for a launch day Wii. 15+ months is enough time to make it perfect.

Hey dumbass, SSB isn't a core fighting game. So take your 2D generic anime cliched fighters elsewhere.

Bitch.

Famitsu isn't the ratings powerhouse they used to be, at least in my eyes. They've been handing out way too many near perfects recently.

They'll give a 10 to anything Nintendo or Square pumps out now adays

OMG! holy shit, how dare i compare SSB with other figthing games?

i couldn't care less if it's a "core" fighting game or not, i find it boring and little more than a collection of semi amusing cameos.

i am however excited about the inclusion of darth vader in the new SC game. why? because it's a great character inserted into one of the most fluid and intuitive combat systems ever concieved. this is something that every fighting game, core or not needs to stand up to, and my guess is that SSB will not.

Famitsu is like a bible for videogamers in Japan,hm? In a country where Gundam #134 outsells any actual quality product I don`t really give a damn about their editors ratings.

Holy fucking shit, some shitty japanese magazine has given a nintendo game a perfect score?

Wow, that just blows my mind, its not like Famitsu has ever given a Nintendo game a perfect score, guess Brawl really will be good.

The worst part about this how the fanboys will use it as a blanket, most of them knew that Brawl would be good, but now they have number they can toss in people's faces about the greatness of their game, even if 90% don't read japanese and are merely going by score.

Besides, any magazine that gives fucking Nintendogs a perfect score is utter failure printed on glossy paper.

Most fighting games don't do much for me, they're too realistic and if I wanted a realistic fight I'd go punch some sorry loser in the mouth and get myself a real fight.
I prefer fighting games like Smash Bros and DBZ as opposed to all-your-acronyms.

Caring about Famitsu's reviews is like paying attention to how Nintendo Power reviewed a game. Wow! Game on Nintendo console received an 8.4, lowest score possible!

Clockwork:

I do believe that there are four separate reviews, all 1/10. The four are combined for the 40 total you see here.

I am anticipating Brawl, but I do agree that Famitsu has as much journalistic integrity as a hemorrhaged raccoon with rabies.

The day(s) Famitsu gave Final Fantasy XII and Nintendogs both a 40/40 they lost all credibility with me.

I don't really care about review scores on this game, though. Last generation I played SSBM more than any other game; and I've got a really good feeling it will be the same with Brawl.

Well, they recruit their reviewers from local secondary and high schools (Note Nintendogs 40/40). Perfect score for such a highly-anticipated sequel isn't a huge surprise.

I do love how people will come into these comments sections and talk when they have no idea what they're even saying.

Exhibit A:

Klytus: "Button mashing, Perfected!"

^-- Never actually played a SSB title. Apparently.

Exhibit B:

i certainly know what i'm saying thanks, obviously you do not.

i'm say it's apples to apples, if you want to call SSB an orange go ahead, but it's a fighting game to me - it doesn't offer a lot more than that.

Criteria in which reviewers blindly give more points:
Wii: +5
Mario: +10
Not a "minigame" game on the Wii: +40

It's easy to see why it got 40 when you think about

I've played SSB on the N64 and GameCube and if there's one thing that I've found is that the game is usually fun for about 10 minutes.
Coincidentally, that's the amount of time it takes to realize there's very little to the game. Even the single player bits are very boring.
I'm not so sure that it's coincidental that one of Nintendo's spokesperson said a while back in which they said that there is no future in games with depth. In my opinion it just seems as though Nintendo is incapable of creating games with depth and this is proof.
The fact that Famitsu is giving it a high score just points to a heavy Japanese bias.

It sounds like you were playing by yourself, therein lies the error. Smash Bros. is definitely not a game to play by yourself. And apparently they have expanded on the single player mode this time around, but before single player wasn't the selling point of the game.

And whoever says that Smash Bros is a button mashing game is insane, just try button mashing. We'll all be laughing while you appear to be having an epileptic fit.

Whoever called Smash bros a button basher should be shot, then be shine spiked followed by an infinite shine combo. That's not freakin' button bashing.

Smash brothers offers vastly more than other fighters. Why? Short story, control. Long story, skill in Smash brothers is more focused on the player and the mind games he can play as button inputs apart from the aforementioned wavedashing are somewhat simple. So instead of worrying that I've incorrectly hit the combo and my shoryuken won't land properly, I'm a lot more focused on whether Down B is actually the right move for the situation and the manner in which my opponent will react to this.

This method of fighting is really quite different to most of your generic fighters, yes the abrieviations do have associated mind games, but what is street fighter except, jump in, attempt to do a combo, hope they don't uppercut you. In fact, if you look closely you can see that SF4 is beginning to follow the same path as Smash has.

SSB is different from other fighters. I'd say the best way to classify it is as a platformer-fighter... but you can't compare Smash Bros to Soul Calibur, Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, etc. That's not to say that one is better, but that they are just too different to really be compared.

I'm not looking for a fight or anything, but from my experience, button mashing doesn't work. I will go as far to even say that button mashing works better in other fighters because often times, all of your attacks are directed at your opponent - you don't have to chase people or turn around to direct your attacks.

I really don't care about the reviews of the game. 40/40 = whatever. Unless it gets extremely low scores from many media outlets, I'm going to buy it anyway. And I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case for many people.
psycho terror2's Avatar - Comment posted on 01/16/2008 17:37

@ BluFire

saying you can button mash, and saying you don't have to chase people or direct attacks in other fighting games is like saying you don't know how to play other fighting games. trying to play SF or SC like that against somebody with any kind of skill will get your ass kicked immediately (no doubt this is true of SSB also).

whatever natural 20 was trying to say (using mind games, choosing the right attack instead of doing the same one over and over) simply leads me to believe that either SSB is for people that can't play other fighting games, or that as i have already stated, SSB is not unique or special and should be treated as any other beat 'em up.

@ Psycho - I'm sure you know what you're saying, just not what you're talking about. SSB isn't about combo memorization. The fighter genre is BUILT on combo memorization. If it doesn't walk like a duck, and it doesn't talk like a duck, it can't be a duck. If you're so convinced that these other games are better than SSB which hasn't even released in NA yet, why not go troll on posts about those games, rather than this one. You don't like it, you have nothing good to say, so STFU.
