Famitsu Awards released

Famitsu Awards released photo

Evidently the Japanese rewards season starts late. While all the American gaming publications practically announce their game of the year awards before the year is over, Famitsu, Japan's foremost gaming magazine, wait s almost a full four months to release their winners. Wait, you mean they give those end of year games a chance to percolate and actually get played through possibly more then once? This makes absolutely no sense at all! Awards should be handed out as near as possible to the holiday seasons so that judgments are made entirely on pre-release hype.

So after giving the games all this time to actually be played, what have they come up with? Well there is a hell of a lot more Nintendo love on the list. How about Wii Music getting an award for greatest innovation? Not many Westerners are going to agree with that one. I can't read moonspeak, but I'm guessing these awards only go out to Japanese game developers, since there is a World-wide Award that went to Grand Theft Auto. That would explain a lot of the missing big name games on the list. Then again Japan has very different gaming habits than America does so it could just be they love these games more.

Communication game?

That's a genre now?

Also, The Last Remnant won something? All respect is lost.

Oh Japan and their Monster Hunter. I guess Japanese devs aren't really making a lot of racing games anymore either, if Mario Kart Wii was all they had. Or a lot of new IP's if Last Remnant won anything. And I wonder if the "Masterpiece Prize" is a category specifically for remakes. Because that's sadly entirely legitimate...

Is it just me or does it seem like they invented awards around particular games? Communication prize? High-Quality Grand Prize? Multi-Play prize?

And since when do puzzle games and adventure games get lumped into the same category? Japanese awards are very odd.

Most of those awards made me gag. My tastes obviously differ greatly from that of the Japanese.

I find it hilarious that they have a PlayStation 2 game award. That's so Japan.

I can't agree with all that but it is nice to see Vesperia and Persona 4 on there.

Why do they have a specific award for PS2, but not for any other console? And what the heck is "All Generation Prize" for?

Famitsu are so sucking Nintendo's dick. Fucking Mario Kart beats out Burnout Paradise, Motorstorm and others for for best racing game? Fuck!!

Also, how the hell can Wii Music outperform LittleBigPlanet and Mirror's Edge?

And Tales of Vesperia winning the best RGP of the year is such crock.

Hey Japan, there are these games called Valkyria Chronicles, Fallout 3 and Mass Effect.

How the hell do Adventure & Puzzle get lumped into a single category? Where's Braid? Professor Fucking Layton?

last Reminant is the straw that broke the camels back. Hey Japan!!! There are other developers besides Japan. They're called Korea, United States, Canada, UK and the EU along with Russia. You might have heard of them?

I guess the only way to win Famitsu is to be Japanese. GTA IV is basically a token award.

If Hideo Kojima ever starts work on Zone of the Enders 3, he'd be more than the most valuable person, even more than omnipotent. No word great enough exists for that man if he ever ends up making that game.

Man I remember when Famitsu used to mean something, getting a high score from them meant the game was GOOD, like really good.

Now its become the Nintendo handjob rag.

I mean any magazine that gives Nintendogs a perfect score, putting it up there with things like Vagrant Story and Ocarina of time has lost all credibility in my eyes.

Did the winners have to pay to be considered for the awards?

How many games you guys are complaining about losing released in Japan or sold well in Japan? I'm just curious...since Famitsu is a Japanese magazine and they are only considering games released and successful in their tiny little island.

Of course the winners are Japanese. Because the big games in Japan are Japanese, a lot of games that aren't even released yet. If I remember correctly, Mass Effect is only finally coming out in Japan next month. MAY. Did Fallout 3 or Braid even get released there yet? Or LBP or Mirror's Edge? If they did, consider the fact that these are Western games that often don't sell very well over there, just like Japanese games don't really sell well here outside the JRPG/Anime fans. These are JAPANESE awards released for games released in JAPAN.

Just thought some of you might consider that.

Other than that, mock these all you want.

Anyone else taking a bit of issue with Capcom as best of the year in 2008?

Or am I just overmad at them for disappointing me with Resident Evil V?

lub, do remember that some things are probably considerably better than Japan than they are here.

I'm thinking text heavy RPGs particularly; a little something is always lost in the translation.

To be honest the moment I saw that list, I totally agreed with the awards.

Metal Gear Solid, easily won that High Quality award. Snake for Character of Year, obviously! I could go on but seriously all those games are amazing so I dunno what you lot are on about complaining.

The only ones I wouldn't agree with are, Innovation Grand-Prize (don't know any innovative 2008 games to be honest, someone help me out?) and Communication Prize.

Not to be nit-picky but Prize is spelt wrong on the Innovative one, just noticed when copy pasting prize.

Electric utility stocks and their dividend feature is great for retirement plans and a conservative way to play the recovery of the economy in a regular investment account.
