False alarm: Nintendo stock DIDN'T drop after conference photo

Several hours ago, we told you that Nintendo's pre-Tokyo Game Show conference, in which the Big N revealed a handful of upcoming 3DS titles, caused such unrest amongst shareholders that the company's stock dropped by 5% as a result. As it turns out, that... wasn't entirely true.

On page 20 of this Nintendo stock drop thread on NeoGAF, several posters noticed that Nintendo's stock actually fell prior to the conference. Now, I will be up front with the fact that I can't read stock charts for beans, and I'm only going by what these more financially savvy cats are saying. Nonetheless, if what they say is true, the stock drop was just your typical market fluctuation, completely unrelated to the conference. In fact, stock quickly returned to pre-drop levels, so this has been a whole lot of worry over nothing.

I'm quite surprised that the folks at Reuters didn't catch their mistake right away, what with finance being their job and all. I guess the thrill of posting a "Nintendo is doomed" article was too enticing to allow them to think straight. Still, that doesn't erase the shareholders' sentiment that Nintendo had a poor showing, although I doubt anything save an announcement of a true Mario or Pokémon game on iPhone would have satisfied them. For what it's worth, I am looking forward to a number of games that were on display, like the oddly named Bravely Default. Doesn't that sound like a fairy who has missed a loan payment yet is unafraid of the consequences?

I'm surprised stocks didn't sky rocket after a game potentially about loan payments and fairies was announced.

Man, it feels weird to see Nintendo struggling. When I was a kid, Nintendo was to videogames what Sheetrock is to gypsum board.

It's also weird to think about the fact that Nintendo is the last gaming company still making consoles. The focus always seems to be the software giant vs the consumer electronics juggernaut, with the scrappy gaming mainstay off to the side.

The weirdest thing of all is how all of this seems so normal now. Hopefully Nintendo pulls its shit together. They've been a gaming company for 100+ years, and I don't want to imagine a gaming landscape without what they bring to the table.

Hmm I read about the 5% shares drop on IGN before I read about it on here. I wonder if IGN corrected their article?

You mean an article Jim wrote poking fun at the 3DS wasn't entire factual!? Surely you jest, sir!

The conference disappointed me. I mean, there were more than 5 Gatchaman specials back-to-back after the conference was done, and I was shocked that there wasn't a Gatchaman game announce for the 3DS!! I mean, the FECK??!! Who cares about Monster Hunter 4 and a new Fire Emblem, or a new and promising JRPG from Square-Enix, when I could play as 5 bird-themed superheroes who may or may not be the generic 5 team action-robot television show group back in the 60s-80s??!! Nintendo is dead to me... Stupid companies doing a collaboration instead of a new game from a may or may not be popular series!!

as for our friends well, it seems many people are eager to perpetuate the doom and gloom scenario of the financial world...

OR they are simply lazy copylawlcats.. sharing the same source. Too lazy to actually check out FACTS before they post anything. :D

And thus Destructoid gives haters another reason to flame the site due to it's shoddy writers. Seriously, I know people who got mad on Jim for the article about the Wii U being in "development hell" because it worked fine at E3 and apparently the rumor was two weeks old.

I won't judge Jim or the site for this though, even God's most glorious creation makes mistakes.

@Shinta: Pretty much. The 3DS hate stemming from Sterling is understandable and, all said and done, guy has invested money on the thing as much as we did, hence him having the right to complain about everything about the machine he understands as being faulty. He could handle it more carefully, given the publicity of his opinion, but I stand by him wholeheartedly, even though I'm a LOOOOOOOOOONG LONG time Nintendo fan, which is not to say I don't have consoles from other manufacturers(this generation I got 'em all, home console and portable as well, intend to keep on doing so, at least portable-wise).

Then again, hoping for Nintendo to FAIL is just immature, selfish and dumb. I sincerely believe such is not his will, though the blunt wording definitely could lead to such interpretation. As it stands, I'm glad the Destructoid team caught onto the mistake and it nows stands corrected. Peace. And 2D/2,5D/3D² Metroid for 3DS, as soon as fucking possible.

C'mon guys I know it's easy to blame Jim for the article being false--I would LOVE to since I don't share his sentiments against Nintendo at all--but really, he was just posting information from a generally reliable source that happened to get it wrong. At least the site's making up for the mistake and not trying to present false information...

I swear people exaggerate sometimes. Nintendo just nabbed exclusivity to Monster Hunter 4 and its releasing Monster hunter Tri G soon. Now someone please explain to me how in the world are nintendo's stock not bound to sky rocket after announcing two games from the best selling franchise(In Japan) in resent years?!

Okay guys, I admit it. I *did* write the Reuters article. I also hacked Nintendo's feed last night to make it look like the press conference was a boring load of shit, when they actually announced Pokemon for iPhone and a 3DS-Turbo that runs 4G and is being given out free to all fans. Also, Iwata is inviting everybody to ride hoverbikes tomorrow, and I hid the invitations.

I am sorry, guys.

I can't really blame Jim Sterling for the facts he quoted being untrue.

I can, however, blame him for exaggeration and sensationalism, and even worse, for being unfunny in his sarcastic "I'm sorry" post. Also, for that whole lack of dignity thing.

Seriously, though, with as much as Sterling does misrepresent the truth in his posts, it really is kind of amusing that this time it wasn't his fault. Give the guy a break on this one.

Personally I don't mind Jim making mistakes, seeing as every game "journalist" does. It happens, and as long as they admit their mistake, we can move on.

But what I don't understand is his hate for Nintendo's conference. Honestly, the announcements they made were just the things I needed to hear to renew my excitement and desire to own a 3DS. If Jim doesn't like Paper Mario, Luigi's Mansion 2, Fire Emblem, Super Mario 3D, Mario Kart, and Monster Hunter, then I think there's a different issue at hand, like maybe Dtoid should get someone else to report Nintendo news seeing as Jim apparently has no interest in it. Nothing wrong with that, but just have him report things he actually cares about.
