Yesterday we told you that Konami pulled the plug on Iraq-based shooter, Atomic Games’ Six Days in Fallujah. Konami PR was quoted as saying "we decided not to sell it" after hearing some of the negative press the game was attracting. Regardless of the "too soon" factor, it sounded like a pretty good game. Too bad Konami pussed out.
It turns out that Atomic games had no idea what was about to happen with their relationship with Konami. Here's a statement from Atomic Games' President Peter Tamte:
We were informed on Thursday night that Konami had decided to pull out of Six Days in Fallujah. This caught us by surprise. Development of the game had been progressing very well and on schedule. We would very much like the opportunity to complete the game.
That's gotta suck. On top of Atomic Games wanting to finish this game, I'm sure the involved Marines who wanted to tell their story would like them to, as well.
Maybe some other publisher who isn't scared of real-life topics might pick this up. Best of luck to you, Atomic Games.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I think Atomic should finish the game, if possible or get enough together for a demo, and either seek another publisher or perhaps just go speak to Valve. Get Six Days onto Steam, Xbox Live and PSN as a DLC game, then you can cut out the middle man crap.
With no physical game to worry about on shelves, we still get to play the game and you guys get paid. Everyone wins.
I think the public community has no right to say "Too Soon". They do not feel the pain or horrors that real war brings. That being said, what makes a game about vietnam, the most unsupported war of the century okay? Don't you think that might strike some older gamers at heart? Sure. Why did no one care when Nazi Zombies were thrown into COD:W@W? As it is the most unrealistic, bash of history I have ever seen...
What stopped movies like Jarhead from being created, or Stop-loss for that matter... Absolutely nothing.
I think games\movies\tv should be able to portray real life issues or drama without whiny little liberals shreiking about anything that doesn't portray a perfect world. Also, why hasn't anyone said anything about the new Medal of Honor game taking place in Afghanistan yet?!?! Also, when will the whiners complain about that?
They should have been a bit more cognizant of the volatility of this game though. It would be like making a WWII game with a positive spin on the Axis powers (or making them very relatable and human) and then getting surprised when people aren't happy about it. Not that this game (or my scenario) couldn't be done well with legitimate purpose but lots of people don't want people to attempt things like that. I'm still sort of mad that Konami buckled this fast though.
Come on, Rockstar.
Doubt if the US Army would pick this up, and with respect to them, its better that a publisher does so, then you'd be more likely to get both sides of the game story. Either that or the DLC route, via Steam etc.
P.S. Next person to blame this on liberals wins a special award.
I totally agree with ya ...
FPSs aren't really Atlus' deal, they probably want to maintain a reputation as an RPG publishing company.
Maybe somebody else will pickup though and change it a bit or something so as not to offend anyone or something.
I mean how many years have we been in Iraq now? I know the war's still going on and all, but the "too soon" argument doesn't hold water in my opinion
