But then again, they could borderline be sued in a class action lawsuit as a result of a faulty consumer product if they didn't!
They've had these DLC packs announced for a long time, like, the name of all 4 of them have been known since before Dead Money came out.
"The downloadable content will come along with an update for New Vegas that will 'bring improvements to performance and stability in major areas'."
When I had turned off autosave (that was a problem, apparently) and was saving every 5 minutes, hoping it wouldn't lock up in-between, and still managed 8 system-halting lockups through the course of my playthrough.... it occurred to me that finishing NV was a principle of the matter, but I wasn't going to do that ever again, no matter how good the game is supposed to be. No game is worth hosing my console for.
Not sure where you're getting that from.
When I see the word "update", I think free patch, like all the other DLCs did.
There's a free patch released at the same day. You don't have to pay for it.
And I'll be getting this, FO3 and NV has so far been the only games with worthwhile DLC.
And hintedy hint hint, publishers and developers. Note how Bethesda are releasing mod tools -AND- dlc. You can do both.
Anyway, I'm glad to see consistant support for a game so rich with features (and unfortunate bugs).
"Still kinda shitty though: "you want the original game to work properly? Buy the DLC." I still don't understand how they managed to mess up the game mechanics even worse with something that is close to being a copypasta of FO3. "
There is a pretty large amount of ignorance in this entire paragraph. If you're going to hate on something... at least be a tiny bit accurate about the thing you're hating on.
First of all it's not a "copypasta" (hate that meme) of FO3. And as has been pointed out by now several times, you don't need to buy DLC to get an update. It's never been that way for any game on the face of the planet, ever.. so I have no idea why you'd assume that.
I barely had any issues with NV but if you did, be glad that it's being patched far more than F3. Also, read the original blog post, the patch comes before the dlc.
Oh don't get me wrong - I LOVE New Vegas - as in, probably top five of all time on my gaming list, and I've been gaming since 1989.
However, it would be an outright lie to say the game shipped finished. There were hundreds of game breaking glitches that caused players to lose 30 hours worth of adventuring/data. The only single player game in recent memory that had a few game breaking glitches (outside of Fallout 3) was Fable II, and that was crucified by many users because of it.
Honestly, it's inexcusable to have this many remaining bugs eight months after release. It doesn't bother me, but it's sleazy as hell - especially after a RECENT update caused NEW game breaking issues! How can you excuse that?
I love the hell out of it so far. I mean, there are some minor graphical glitches so far, but nothing game breaking like im reading here about NV. Is it really that buggy? Didn't Bethesda work on both games?
I'd say it's just incompetence, they could do with some better programmers. I'm hoping it's just the engine, and I'm also hoping that F4 will have a better engine. I can sympathize with those issues, as F3 would crash on me regularly. At least NV has been better supported, even if patches need patches themselves.
You aren't thinking out of your perspective.
I've beaten the game 4 times, and had one game breaking glitch, which I circumvented through a 3 hour exploit.
I've talked to people who have played the game 8 hours, and either had their save erased, or impeded by a glitch that forces them to restart. They do exist - it's basically a play at your own risk game.
I don't really feel that people on the outside should have the right to complain about some technical bugs that've never affected them personally due to having never been invested in the game in the first place. While I'll be the first to admit that Gamebryo is full of fail when it comes to stability, and its simple for just anyone to take potshots at the game, I've still put at least 200 hrs into F3 and am about 60 hrs in on NV. The experience offered is truly unlike anything else, and so while that doesn't justify the bugs being there, it more than made it easy for me to restart my console the handful of times it was necessary across both games, and still remain enthusiastic about playing. It rises above its faults.
Anyways, back to dreaming about (a fully stable) F4 on the Skyrim engine.
The NV dlc has been great so far imo. Can't wait to pick this up.
I've loved the FO series since '98, hell, I even embraced the change to FPS/RPG with open arms. NV's story is entertaining and a great addition to canon. Having said that, it damages immersion (and frankly, fun) to have to contend with issues that should have been caught and fixed if not in QA, then certainly in the first month of release. Waiting for people to play it and then fix *some* of the problems is shady, but maybe shadier is pushing a release date when the product is clearly not ready for market. The only way to combat that sort of management behavior is for consumers to stop acting like entitled twats when the date gets pushed forward and to stop supporting companies that push unfinished games. Trust me on this one, the FO franchise (and Obsidian) will survive being moved to a better parent company.
Also, stop acting like it won't happen with the next one, either- this is a great cash cow since people have proven to fork out money for a substandard product on day 1, based on the franchise name alone.
TL;DR- something that's 1/2 shit, or shit with potential, is still shit.
I didn't think New Vegas' glitches were enough to bring the pitch forks out for. While I think it's important to be vocal about it's issues, so they can fix it in the future, I don't think gamers should go so far as to boycott Bethesda.
New Vegas is sitting on an 8.4 on Metacritic for both PC and 360, which honestly, is good. I wouldn't call the game "shit" at all.
I honestly don't think it will happen with the "next" one (or Skyrim), so long as the new engine is used.
