Fallout 3's 'The Pitt' is broken as buggery, claim gamers photo

Bethesda today released the next part of its Fallout 3 DLC, The Pitt, but warnings have come in from early downloaders to avoid this thing like the plague, because it's borked to Hell. Described as "completely broken" by one poster, and flagged as a "corrupted file" by a Dtoid community member, it sounds like this download needs to be avoided for now.

Giant floating exclamation marks seem to be the most striking phenomenon in The Pitt, although glitchy graphics and missing textures are also quite prominent. Raiders are showing "rainbow colors" on certain parts of their bodies, and that classic -- the complete game freeze -- is also rearing its ugly head with regularity.

With three threads on the subject at Bethesda's forums already, this is looking to be quite a widespread issue. The general consensus right now is to avoid The Pitt, especially on the 360, where it seems a majority of these issues lie.

Frankly, this doesn't surprise me. Fallout 3 was, itself, a shameful mess of glitches and bugs. The fact that the DLC is a botched mess seems rather in keeping with the spirit of the game.

It can't be more buggy than the full game. Or can it?

"a shameful mess of glitches and bugs"??? I guess this is your typical irony at work here. I played Fallout 3 on the PC and it ran smoothly like a river of cream. Delicious, sweet cream.

It's a shame if the DLC is such a mess, but I never intended to get it anyway. For me FO3 had an ending and I didn't intend to spend time with it after that. I can patiently wait for the inevitable number 4.

I never had TOO much of a hard time with Fallout. Once I got stuck in a rock and just teleported out. And only one other time did the game freeze on me. But I think that might have been my retardedly loud and dangerously close to death 360 console.

Yes it is ParaParaKing. Most people can't get into the city, the giant floating exclamation marks Jim mentions. It is an absolute mess.

Not that I'm all that bothered now, my 10 month old 360 has E74'd. happened after I downloaded this, I don't think there is a connection though.

Still, avoid this like the plague.

Well that's really disappointing, but there is some good that comes out of this. At least the PS3 fanboys have something to rejoice about.

Lucky. While mine only suffered the occasional glitch or loss of textures, it would randomly crash all the time. I got real close to the save function in that game.

Still, to hear that the DLC is that horribly buggy is kind of sad.

Can you write an article without trying to sound like a tabloid journalist?

Fallout had some bugs, but it was hardly a "shameful mess of glitches and bugs". The game was pretty fucking stellar IMO and never crashed or hung up on me on the one and a half playthroughs I've given the game. The only glitch I ever had was on my first playthrough where the lincoln memorial was buggy when you went to the back of the memorial.

IIRC, you guys gave the game a 9 and make no mention of this "mess of glitches and bugs", which seems to be a pretty convenient turn of opinion for your story more than any real issues with the original game.

Did it have reported bugs? Yep. Were there people who had game breaking glitches? Yep. Was it something that affected everyone in every way, making the game unplayable or somehow full of shame? Nope.

I haven't run into any bugs or glitches in my copy of Fallout 3. Entire game ran smooth and fine as far as I can tell. What?

But good to know about the Pitt not being "ready." Was going to download it as soon as I got home but knowing this, I'll wait.

@Konrad_Hazen

I played it on the PS3 and PC and had a great experience, too.

Maybe this will be a better PC experience than a 360 one.

I played the 360 version and the first bunch of radroaches in the vault were clipping halfway through a wall and flailing around like madmen.

Then many hours later i went exploring and came accross a giant white void, that crashed my xbox when i walked into it. Oh, but enemies were still attacking me.

It didn't really take away from my enjoyment, but it did concern me a bit.

IIRC, I never wrote that review, and actually disagree with the game's score. Contrary to popular belief, the Destructoid writers do not share some all-encompassing hive mind.

My experience of the game is of glitches and bullshit. I deeply apologize for not having the exact same experience you did.

Anyway, with the main game, I've had the occasional glitch here and there for the PS3 version of the game, but then I played the PC version and it ran pretty fine for me.

Thats too bad. I had zero problems on PC, but yeah... it is Bethesda. There are bound to be people with difficulty. They kind of have a history with their previous games. At least on PC you could try and tweak them, fan patch, and otherwise get around problems. Console... not so much. Which is why I never understood why people played their games on console. If you don't have access to a good PC, thats one thing, but when you have a perfectly built PC and still play it on console... thats just wrong.

While I have encountered a few bugs on my 360 version of the game, I still play the hell out of it. I'm at about 70 hours and have had the game freeze three times, and had the head Regulator lady run out of the building when Rad Scorpions attacked the cattle outside. She never returned and I had to re-load the auto-save.

Sucks the DLC is hosed, but according to a post by one of the members of the Bethesda team, they are looking into it. So, I'll just re-download it later when it's fixed.

"Was it something that affected everyone in every way, making the game unplayable or somehow full of shame? Nope."

Did you try the unpatched PS3 version? I did, and it made a mockery of that quote. Game freezing every time you get any sort of message in the corner, and the massively irritating G.O.A.T. bug. As good a game as it is, Bethesda continously thinks it can get away without proper QA/testing, and that is shameful.

Ah...floating exclamation points. This is a common sight to most Oblivion PC mod enthusiasts, although the exclamation points were yellow, there.

Looks like the download is missing some 3d model files. How did that slip through QA?

Mine's broken as well, but lucky not freezing. The buildings are all missing in the downtown area though, and the textures are completely glitching out.

Sufficed to say, I'm gutted, but at least Major Nelson's on the case.

Also not as bad as what I ran into in Fable 2, purchased for $60 as opposed to 800 points. Hopefully it's just something as simple as files missing from the package that Bethesda sent to Microsoft.

I'm constantly amazed at how low peoples' expectations and standards of quality are where they can defend a game like Fallout 3. Was the game fun? Sure. Was it buggier than most independent modding projects, with a main quest that was woefully inadequate? Definitely.

I feel people need to start being more critical of lazy design in order to force the developers to change their bad habits.

I played it on PC, and I was actually impressed with how I could wiggle my way out of any seemingly-trapping scenery, and how it never crashed or missed textures. Looks like they need to work on getting it awesome for every system and PC, though.

Fallout 3 runs perfectly imo I'm on 93 hours and I've never had a crash... did see a robot stuck underground once though.

On the other hand, The Pitt is TOTALLY FUCKED like, pre-alpha build fucked. So irritating.

To be fair, I must admit I did get stuck once while playing on my PC. I was confused, as usually with a mouse I'm able to wiggle out of it ala Morrowing\Oblivion. So Fallout 3 reached new lows in that department for me. I lost about 20 minutes of play because of my lazy saving.

Obviously the red diamonds with white exclamation points means that there is a missing art asset.

It appears like the 360 build was corrupted. Bethesda could've uploaded the wrong build to Microsoft, Microsoft could've uploaded the wrong build to LIVE, or it could've been corrupted in the final upload. I am leaning towards the latter, as it's very unlikely that Microsoft would have uploaded The Pitt without giving it a spin through their QA department.

Fallout 3 is just "one of those games". It's very large, and thus bound to have some glitches. Now, for me personally the few glitches I got were due to issues with Games for Windows Live and not the game itself.

Some people will find no bugs and others will find all of them. It's the nature of beast. I think Jonathan Ross found every glitch imaginable when he was playing the first Gears of War while I hardly saw any. It painted our impressions of the game quite differently. He also played by himself which as complete fail :P

Fallout 3 is practically a technical breakthrough. It's astonishingly massive. It's only natural that it has some issues. I do agree that calling it a "shameful mess of glitches and bugs" is a bit over the top.

I'd agree with you, except for the fact that this game isn't a linear corridor shooter. And games (even something like CoD4 or GoW2) have had geometry issues. It's not anything rare. I've had Marcus go through a piece of cover and be stuck.

The problem here is that everyone is trying to make their experience the definitive one. I get what DMV was saying, even though he came off a little jerk off-ish.

When i restarted the game, i decided to look around the enviroment and started to notice them. Kind of surprise I didnt notice them on the first playthrough. 360. Cant wait till they fix this pit they made.
