Fallout 3 pics: Making ugly look beautiful photo

Dystopian wastelands have never looked quite so good, in my opinion. The Fallout 3 Post Nuclear Blog has collected a bunch of new screenshots for you to check out that show off how good Bethesda's take on the Fallout universe is looking. I'm sure that the obsessed and creepy purists will find something to moan about, like, "That skeletal mutant doesn't look skeletally mutantish enough to be 'true' Fallout, fnar fnar," but who cares about them?

I'm certainly liking it. The wasted backdrops look gorgeously derelict, while the monsters on show are rather grotesque and icky looking. Check out the guy who looks like the Crypt Keeper. What do you guys think? Let Destructoid know if Fallout 3 is on your list of DO WANTS this year.

I would be more excited had they used more than the generic brown used in nearly all other fps's.

Saying that, it does look cool and I might well enjoy it, can't say I'm overly hyped at the moment though.

Wardrox: I think I see a lot more greeny-grey going on. Maybe not so much in these screens, but in other footage and stuff. Sure those are overused colors too, but they give off this really bleak beauty that works welk, in my opinion.

The new screenshots look amazing. I guess I can understand the ranting that NMA has about how the Vault isn't supposed to look dirty but the picture in the Vault is still my favorite screenshot in this batch..

This is getting me pumped for the game. I'm still being cautious though, because we need to see if Bethesda can really make a worthy successor to the Fallout games and we need to see if this won't be an "Oblivion with Guns." Ugh Oblivion was such a disappointment.

Having not played any of the previous fallout games I'm not really sold on Fallout 3. The new screens look good and all but I don't know I'm still not 100% convinced to be really hyped about this yet. That being said I wasn't hyped about Bioshock at all until I bought it on a whim and was blown away.... hopefully the same thing will happen to me with fallout 3

Hmm, I can see that. But just like with Haze, regardless of it's individual merit, when viewed along side condemned-bio-gears-of-duty-sektor-time-tournament I can't help but feel I have already seen it.

Saying that, I enjoyed most of these games. I think I'll wait for more previews to emerge before passing too much judgement.

Looking forward to it. I think some German site got hold of these screens first? What are they doing with them?!

On the downside, I am, like many others, beginning to get a little cynical about "next-gen brown".

Vault? Clean?

Remember kids: Vault 101 was supposed to stay closed forevah. It makes sense that it's a bit rundown, compared to the original Vault 13. Then again, I'm not sure of the chronological order of the stories so eh.

Must.Hope.For.Best.

All the good RPGs this year are going to have a dog companion. FACT

Also, who expects a post nuclear holocaust earth to be covered in beautiful lush green vegetation, clear blue sky and shiny newly painted things?

Yeah true that qwerty, its as much about the atmosphere as the gameplay. A game featuring mutants and mass decay wouldnt be complemented with the mindless colorings of a 4 year old.

Im not sold on the turn based combat, i have yet to play a turn based game and i don't know if il be able to get into it. Aslong as the story is well written and exciting then i probably won't care

My first thought was also too much next-gen-brown, but then I remembered that's what the fallout games have always looked like, so there's not really cause to complain. Also, like el fajita said, who says a vault couldn't have gotten dirty in the probably hundreds of years since the first game and this one? Do want, but that's little to do with these screens in particular.
glipe's Avatar - Comment posted on 04/07/2008 10:29

@brad drac: I'm with you on the "needs-more-brown"; it's definitely Fallout's style and so I can't complain about them using it. They will use it with style and purpose. I'm just getting tired of everyone else using it without that style and purpose. BORING!!

This game is on my DO WANT list for the decade. Although clearly it needs much less browns and grays and way more pinks and neon greens (dtoid green?) to make me believe I am playing in a world torn by nuclear war. Nukes are just super concentrated rainbows right? Right.

I'm kind of torn between the 'zomgzomgzomgnewFalloutzomg' and 'hmmm' camps when it comes to FO3, but fundamentally it doesn't matter what it looks like as long as Bethesda maintain the intelligence/sophistication of the script and plot. Oblivion proved they could be subtle with the details; hopefully FO3 will prove them equally capable at cinematic narratives. I'm cautiously excited.

Good god, I do want this game. I don't care what any Fallout 3 bashers say, this game is gonna be awesome.

I do think a lot of games are beginning to look the same, since many of them use Unreal 3 engine (seeing as many developer don't really create their engines anymore).

The washed out reality look is the in thing now I guess, but what about tomorrow?

I wish I could shoot a rainbow at the next person that says Oblivion was a disappointment.

I'm stoked about the party hats. I wish the screens held a little back instead of showing off the super-muties and power armor. I just want a taste I don't want the whole thing laid out before I even play. I get the feeling that there will be another countdown of mini-trailers like Oblivion had, which was kind of lame. I hope instead there is a strange silence about a week before it comes out.... then a massive explosion of awesomeness.
