Fallout 3 DLC details: Increased level cap, new perks, first screens, and more photo

Not long ago, Bethesda hinted at what was in store for Fallout 3's future in terms of downloadable content, and already the company is throwing out more juicy details our way.

IGN interviewed Fallout 3's lead producer Jeff Gardiner about the three upcoming DLC packs, and you'd be surprised at how much was divulged. The first pack, Operation: Anchorage, has you fighting your way into a Chinese base while inside a computer simulation a la Tranquility Lane. It'll be out in January for 800 Microsoft Points.

Operation: Anchorage will include a new perk, "Covert Ops," and is said to take between four and five hours to complete. Additionally, if you opt to purchase this pack, it can be accessed via a quest marker on your in-game map.

You asked for it, and now Bethesda is going to deliver: the third piece of DLC, Broken Steel, will not only raise the game's level cap, but it will also bring "new foes, perks, and all of the other Fallout 3 staples" along with it.

Perhaps the most excited news to come out of this interview, however, is the fact that players will be allowed to "continue on after the main quest ends in the Broken Steel DLC." For anyone who's beaten Fallout 3, this should be music to your ears.

When I saw the level cap I wondered how much Bethesda would charge to let us pass it.

DLC already? I'm still waiting for price drops for Fallout 3. Also, I bet there'll be a 'Fallout 3: Special Edition' released eventually, at a budget price and with the DLC already on it.

With the DLC that brings more story and a higher cap, it kind of makes sense to have had the level cap in the first place now.

Is the Broken Steel pack going to be free, because that's some bullshit right there. It's pretty obvious that Bethesda put in a level 20 cap and denied people the ability to continue on after the end to release those features as DLC down the line.

Considering mods on PC have already removed the level cap within days of release and allowed continued play after completing the main quest I don't see why this couldn't have been patched in for all versions. What people wanted according to feedback? I find it hard to believe Bethesda weren't well aware of the feedback they would receive while still in development.

Bethesda Destroyed the Fallout title and should be banned from making any remakes EVER again. There are so many dam flaws in that game i would contract carpel tunnel over the course of 3 days typing all that is horribly wrong with that game. what they needed to do was make it an mmorpg with it(omg the possibilities and how much better the game could have been if they had just put some dam thought into it) At leasr ATHF Zombie Ninja Pro Am and Strong Bad have some originallity

How do you extend/complete the main story with the expansions when (Spoilers!) you fucking die at the end of the game? (end spoilers)

I agree. Spoiling Fallout by telling everyone that the end of the game has...

Ah... had you goin' there... Just for a second.

@Timmeh

Considering that most people beat the game by around the time you hit level 20, I saw no problem with this. Also considering that I'd picked up Fawkes shortly after hitting level 20, combat would've become tiring and laborious if I had to fight off Fawkes for my XP for my kills. She's already cost me a few hundred caps in lost fingers of evil characters for my Lawbringer stuff.

you just load up your last save before you finished the main quest?
@joe
there are multiple endings..and the ending doesn't even matter just reload up your last save and explore / side quest all you want.

what I think sucks is that after I beat it I went back and explored everywhere and killed so many guys but since I was at 20 already I got no EXP. so now that they finally raise the cap.. all that killing was for nothing.. they should have kept track of my EXP so when it is raised I level up as I should have. why have a level cap in an open ended game.. it makes no sense at all.

Damn straight - why throw good money after bad - the game is virtually unplayable on the 360

Although you dont really need more levels new perks might be fun but with all the books, bobbleheads and stuff you can usually do well enough without.
Im just looking forward to new locations big and small as im still finding new stuff (i dont use guides so i trawl the wastes). The best part of oblivion was the cheap minor locations that they had every few weeks.

Now to add more stuff to my house having just realised, having redone the intro, that you can pick stuff up now using the right stick not just drop them which if i go back and find in Oblivion as well im gonna go nuts!

Also, HOW ABOUT NO SHITTY ENDING PATCH? My god that was complete garbage, one of the worst endings I've ever been privy to.

@Murumasa123: prepare to lose your mind man, you could totally pick stuff up and move it around in Oblivion. It wasn't a toggle like in Fallout 3 though, you have to hold the button in...I believe it's front bumper on the 360.

also,
Is the game really horribly buggy on the 360 or something? I've played it on PS3 and PC and had no problems at all except it crashes every now and then on PC.

Is it really that hard to imagine how the post-ending game would start?

!!POSSIBLE SPOIL'ANS BELOW!!

*fade in from white with Elder Lyons hovering over you*
"Thank goodness you've finally awoken! You've been in a coma for weeks since Sarah forced the door of the purifier and dragged you to safety. Alas, her actions have cost her dearly and she too is unconscious and on her death bed. I need you to undertake a long and contrived quest for a special piece of medical equipment to heal her. Then we can talk about you joining the Brotherhood..."

Was that so hard? I'm mostly annoyed that I have to wait until Spring until I can actually continue playing with my main character.

...Also, I liked the ending. It needed to be a fuckton longer, detailing the aftermath of my exploits, but I honestly enjoyed what was there. My disappointment was in there not being enough of it.

I pirated it to play through on PC, but as soon as they re-release it with these awesome DLC expansions included in some special edition, I'm all over it. I love the game, and by the time they re-release it, the mod tools should be good to go as well. Woohoo!

I got it the PC version and found a command that lets you raise the level cap. So I loaded my save and carried on exploring after I completed and now I'm level 30something. I also made me giant for a while heh.

There's even one to make Dogmeat invincible, which relieves the stress of there being no command for "Don't fucking attack everything in sight!"

Also, for everyone wondering why they have a level cap, I get the feeling it was aimed at increasing replay value by forcing you to play again if you want to explore some of the other perks and how they affect gameplay. I'm not saying I agree with the decision, but I think there might be other rationales that don't involve them simply wanting to screw us out of money on DLC.

I tried to be open-minded about the ending, considering all the grumblings I heard in the past couple of weeks. I finally beat the game last night, and it sure was underwhelming. I loved the entire game, despite its shortcomings and glitches, but the ending was not satisfying at all.

I'm definitely interested in this DLC. All of it will probably be worth picking up, but I'm especially looking forward to raising the level cap and continuing after the main quest.

Increased level cap through DLC? Pfffff no need. Type

"setgs imaxcharacterlevel 40" in the console to upgrade your level cap to 40 (you can write the number you want). I'm actually now level 23, trying to finish every quest in the wasteland :-). Oh and this only works for 'good' games. Being evil crashes the game or something...

Well I put 120 hours into this game. I ran the entire world down at the lvl 20 cap. I had it freeze my xbox like 3 imes int he entire time I played. Otherwise I never really had a problem on my 360. The ending sucked (as far as the story part) but overall the game was amazing. And there are multi ways to finish this game dumbasses.

SPOILER ALERT

YOU DONT HAVE TO DIE!!!! I dont know why everyone says you have to die? Send the bitch in and continue on with the story when the DLC comes out. Although I am VERY EVIL because in a world that is decimated by nuke fallout, Im not shaking hands... Im shaking faces with the Terrible Shotgun.

Also I didnt like that I couldnt get all the bobbleheads since I blew up Megaton but whatever.

Im only missing the speech and 20 bobblehead achievements so I think I can clearly say I have devoted a asston of time to this game. DLC seems cool but I guess I am pissed since I uncovered the entire world (YES EVERY FREAKING PIECE.. not with perk but with getting perk saving it and going back to my main game to get the Vats perk, then reload every now and again to see where a new location is) and now I can never have all those kills add to my level. Guess Ill start again sometime down the road WITH DLC and be a nice guy :P

@ Goon

I DID send the chick in, people weren't really so pissed at whether or not you died, they were pissed that the game doesn't keep going

@ Bluemeep

Yeah, I considered that as a possible continuance as well, but what if you used the poison or whatever the hell it was that Eden gave you, wouldn't all the brotherhood be dead (I'm just assuming it worked as he/it said it did here, since I didn't actually do this myself)
