It's been a long time coming, but Bethesda has finally announced that the Fallout 3 downloadable content Xbox 360 and PC owners have been playing for quite a while now will soon be making it to PlayStation 3.
First up is Operation: Anchorage, which will be out in late June, then there's The Pitt and Broken Steel, which will be released 4-6 weeks apart. But that's not all: there are also two new DLC packs planned for all three platforms.
Point Lookout brings players to a brand new swamp area, while Mothership Zeta follows up on a Fallout 3 easter egg and involves you getting abducted by aliens. Both add-ons will cost $9.99 and will be available through token cards at retail as well as through PSN and the Xbox Marketplace.
For players on an Xbox 360 or PC, Point Lookout will be out in late June, but the PlayStation 3 release won't be until after the first three content packs are available for download. As for Mothership Zeta, it won't be playable until late July for 360 and PC, with the PS3 version planned for sometime after Point Lookout is up on PSN.
Hit the break for more.
With so many DLC packs in the works, you better believe Bethesda is going to be hitting retail hard. On May 26, Fallout 3 Game Add-on Pack #1 will make it to stores in the form of a disc containing Operation: Anchorage and The Pitt for $9.99.
Likewise, Fallout 3 Game Add-on Pack #2 will contain Broken Steel and Point Lookout (also for $9.99) and can be found in stores starting in August. Interestingly enough, these two offerings will only pertain to Xbox 360 and PC. Bethesda says "retail versions of the game add-on packs for PS3 are not possible," so PS3 owners will only be able to grab the DLC from the PlayStation Network.
Finally, Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition is coming in October, and it's going to be one hell of a deal. For $59.99 on both consoles and $49.99 on PC, you get the core game plus all five Fallout 3 DLC packs. Damn!
Betheda's DLC Experiences in a nut-shell
1) They release a couple of disc based add-ons for Morrowind, with lukewarm reception. Later, they bundle them to great sucess in a GOTY edition.
2) They realize "hey! We can penny-pinch these people now with Xbox Live!", and release tons of micro content for Oblivion that makes money hand over fist, and they don't have to release it to retail.
3) They release a separate Expansion for Oblivion in retail, which is met with a lukewarm reception, but they also release it digitally, to great success.
4) They pinny-pinch the shit out of you with $10 DLC that is only a few hours long with Fallout 3, but people still buy it.
Basically they went from "straight to GOTY edition/long content" to "$10 2-3 hour long digital content". I'd say they're adjusting their business model to compensate for the economic times, and we'll see Fallout: New Vegas or Elder Scrolls 5 sooner.
They accurately predict when the market for their games will saturate (for Fallout 3, they're saying October, 2009), and then release a complete, super-duper GOTY edition with everything on it for a sickly cheap price.
All I have to do is finish valkyria chronicles, infamous, cross edge, batman, super robot taisen OG saga: endless frontier( more like endless title) persona 3 and 4 and rouge galaxy and whatever will come outta E3 and I might be able to squeeze you in there eventually.
Ok I'm probalbly skipping fallout 3 anyway.
Fuck you Bethesda. Suck my balls.
Hopefully they will have piss poor sales of this content and realise that PS3 users don't like being screwed over by Microshafts underhanded exclusivity deals and that it's not worth alienating that portion of your market to make a quick buck.
either that or they'll go "not many sales on PS3, damn, there must not be that many of them!" - Stupid.
Although, PS3 users can generally afford to blow cash on DLC so this will probably sell well.
Fallout 3 has sold almost a million more on the 360, so maybe it wasn't such a waste after all?
I'm a bit confused.
Glad PS3 owners can get the DLC, though. I'm a 360 owner and they are great, and it always seemed a bit unfair to me that we got it and they didn't (especially the level cap raise).
Also I agree with having to pay $50 more for DLC, but I'm so addicted to this game I probably won't notice.
Also the Alien thing sounds stupid, I'm sorry to say.
I don't think I'll be buying any more DLC. Of the first three packs, only one was worth the money, and that was Broken Steel. Anchorage was nice, but too short and too limited, and I couldn't stand the Pitt with its horrible reddish glare, small size and numerous bugs, as well as uninteresting items.
Looks like I'll be stopping here Bethesda. You can't just keep churning this sort of stuff out. You'd be best served spending time on making Fallout 4.
And SC, boycotting the DLC because 360 got it first is just plain fucking stupid. Bethesda started out as a PC dev, hence the extra clout Microsoft's console with it's PC architecture has with them.
Couldn't agree more. If you don't like DLC stop bitchin and walk away.
I know that what Bethesda is doing is retarded and stupid, but i can't stop buying it, i like Fo3 and i wanna keep playing.
PS: When are you going to stop to rape my wallet Bethesda?
I don't feel that they're penny-pinching the costumer. If you don't want the DLC then don't get it. It doesn't effect the integrity of the original game, and, this late in, it should be obvious that it's newly developed content.
If you're displeased then vote with your dollar, but don't badmouth a company simply because it's doing what it exists to do. And if you're upset with the fact that Bethesda is making a mint then support indie development teams that put out free games instead.
@Magnalon
Agreed, I think that people forget that with Bethesda it's always good to wait for the GOTY edition. That way you get the extra content at a bargain price.
Also, your new avatar is tripping me out.
Maybe i'm wait a little while...
I borrowed a friend's copy to play through the main quest (sans any DLC) last month. I decided to get the full game and try to get to level 30 and also play evil in my 2nd playthrough.
I only have to wait 5 months and I can basically get all the DLC for free (since F3 still sells for $60 retail)? DONE.
If you don´t like it, just don't play it.
please excuse my tears of joy!!!
I was sooooo hoping they'd bring the DLC to the PS-Triples.
I will sleep soundly tonight
Dont you get it? I like Fallout 3 loads and want more content, but i dont think DLC size content is worth it with a game like this. Id rather have an expansion like they did with the Shivering Isles in Oblivion. Also they are essentially selling the ending of the game with the Broken Steel DLC, dosnt that piss you off at all?
I love that Bethesda's continuing to support the game this long after release. Where are you guys to bitch about all the cool new content that's come out for Burnout Paradise? Does that irk you as well that they create new content long after the game comes out?
I mean, for a developer to continue to offer this much fun and entertaining content for long after the initial game comes out is awesome.
I feel like I've gotten my money's worth with The Pitt and Broken Steel. Broken Steel dropped enough challenges onto the main game, post content, that I feel I've got loads to keep me busy. The Zeta expansion holds the most promise for me. I really want a Firelance and I'm kinda peeved that in my one shot at getting one, the game glitched when the UFO crashed and UFO didn't actually crash on the landscape, but there was ammo littered everywhere.
Now maybe I can get one.
But then again, it's hard to beat the overwhelming death dealt with a Tesla Cannon.
With that thing, the only thing that I've got to worry about are Albino Radiscorpions. Even Deathclaws don't freak me out much anymore, now that I've got Fawkes hanging out with me all the time.
It's awesome when good games like these get this amount of DLC. I wish more AAA titles would receive this type of support.
Also...
@ Magnalon and other nay-sayers:
How are you guys going to complain about value with Bethesda's releases? First off, 2-3 hours is a VERY conservative estimate for Fallout 3 DLC packs. I spent at least 5 hours with each one, and I have two characters so I will eventually play them again, as well. That's $2/hr. at most for some quality entertainment, which holds up very well with going to the theater, buying a DVD, or even buying a video game.
Not to mention, Bethesda sells us games for $60 that often have over 100 hours of content to play through. If they want to "nickel and dime" us for another five hours at a time, I'm fine with that because I feel that I'm still way ahead after getting a 100+ hr. game for $60.
But hey, hats off to all of you who uncovered the huge, secret conspiracy that *gasp*- game publishers and developers want to make money! What next? Are you going to tell me that my favorite restaurants aren't just making me yummy food to be nice, and that they're out to make a profit off of me, as well? ALL THAT I BELIEVED IN IS A LIE!!!!
Fuck you.
and fuck Bethesda, I downloaded the game and all of it's expansion packs. I have yet to touch any of the expansion packs, but I did kick the shit out of the game. Not getting my money, assholes.
I am not complaining that they are penny-pinching us. I'm simply saying, realistically and logically, that they tried the whole "DLC all at once thing", and it didn't work out as well as they hoped. Business is business, and I'm fine with that.
Like you, I am explaining to others that game companies are out to make money. Some give you free DLC, free mission packs, and free levels that are LONGER than Fallout 3's $10 packs. Does that make them a better company? No, it doesn't, but it happens, and it makes me happy when they do it.
I have a choice with Fallout 3:
I can spend $120 now on the full game, or I can wait for the GOTY edition for $60.
How did you think that I didn't like Bethesda in my comments :(?
