Fallout 3 demo is impossible, Gears of War demo probably isn't, but won't happen photo

A while ago we talked about how game demos were seen as not being anywhere near as effective as trailers, and it seems a few developers are taking that to heart. Both Epic Games and Bethesda have come out to say that no demos are forthcoming for their respective titles, Gears of War 2 and Fallout 3.

Talking about Fallout 3, Bethesda's Pete Hines said it was impossible to provide a demo of such a huge game world:

"When you build it as one thing, there's no way to portion off a section and have it stand on its own without putting the whole game in the demo, which we're just not going to do ... And it doesn't really capture the fun of a game like an Elder Scrolls or a Fallout, where you can go where you want and do what you want. So no demo, sorry."

Fair enough. Both Fallout 3 and Gears of War 2 would be first day buys in my book anyway, and I trust Bethesda and Epic enough to not feel like a demo is truly necessary. Still, I hope too many other, less trustworthy developers don't follow their lead. Demos have saved me from a number of purchases in the past, and I'd hate to lose that safety net altogether.

Crackdown had a pretty big world and it had a demo so I don't see what the problem is. Like you said, Bethesda is trust worthy but I think this has to do more with a desire to focus on the main game more than anything else. How hard would it be to ship a demo that allows you to go anywhere but with a strict time limit or something?

I thought about that, but seriously, could you imagine downloading something that big? Maybe on a disc, but who plays demos on discs anymore?

The problem is creating a demo for a game causes two problems. The first is time consumption. Companies that spend time working on a demo for their title, usually chew up alot of time in doing so, giving them less time to work on their full-release title which can lead to a game that didn't quite hit the bar.

The second problem is what I personally experienced with Bioshock. With a demo, you have to be careful not to shoot yourself in the foot as a developer. You need to make the demo enjoyable, not too long, not too short and also carry over the feel of a full game. Bioshocks demo left a sour taste in my mouth and I thought it was terrible but I played the full-release and it was fantastic.

Demo's = fail
Trailers = win

Gears of War 2 doesn't need a demo. It'll sell fine with just a few ads on TV. As for Fallout, I understand, but the demo whore in me is going, "NOOOOOOOOOO!" Same with Gears 2.

I guess I agree with their decision, but it's always nice to have demos. This just means I have to go by other people's word on how the game plays.

That's ridiculous. Did anyone ever play the demo for Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall? It was amazing. You only got to explore one island, but you could easily have played for 40+ hours because it had so much stuff to do.

I wish they'd do a demo for Fallout, I'm skeptical after having a mixed response to Oblivion. But I suppose there's always the tried and true demo tactic known as the "rental."

Not shocking, to me anyway. Fallout 3 is a big title and will sell well regardless. There wasn't a demo for GTA4 either, and I didn't hear people bitching about that too much.

Interesting how the original Fallout did have a demo showing off a section not used in the game but still demonstrating its choices, mechanics etc, is that not possibly with today's technology?

Also, not being in the industry I have no idea on this but what's the difference between a preview for the reviewers and a demo for the public? Couldn't a cleaned up version of the stuff shown to the reviewers way back when be used as a demo, they already have the basic structure there.

Focusing on Fallout here, because that's what I'm looking forward to.

Wait, so you are telling me that games with a big enough name as Halo 3 (which didn't receieve a demo) are not going to receive a demo?

If you could see my face, you'd see a shocked face that resembles a duh face.

I really was expecting some Fallout demo. This game is creating an addiction of info. on me.
Give videos then, or maybe screenshots, blogs with descriptions. Anything, anything, i need it man, i need it.
OH THE PAIN.

its very simple. If the game has either the hype of fanbase to sell without a demo, there will not be one.

why risk turning someone off who would have bought the game anyway??

Bullshit! They could do a 10 minute timed demo... sure it'd be a big d/l, but it'd totally be worth it for guys like me who are on the fence.

Just that timed demos are way too easy to hack to unlock the whole game.

I wasn't expecting a demo for Fallout 3, but I would have liked one. As one of the few people who didn't love Oblivion(it had some glaring flaws that ruined most of my enjoyment) I'm very wary of Fallout 3, and after all the amazing reviews for Oblivion that mentioned nothing of what I ended up disliking, I feel like I can't trust reviews of Fallout.

Teta your icon is NSFW!!! But I love it anyway.

Boobs.

Topic: I think they should make a little room like a Vault doctor's waiting room with a clearly visible sign that says "WAIT". Meanwhile on nearby monitors the trailers play. Not a bad idea eh?

I like Teta's icon, makes my body tingle ^_^

Trailers mean nothing to me. If I don't get a stab at a demo, I usually don't buy the game. Elder Scroll games not with standing of course, nor will I hold it against Fallout 3. But a FPS/3rd person shooter should have one. Just going to cause more ppl to illegaly obtain it to try it out to see if they like it. Then what's the point in buying it as they already have a copy they can play? <shoots self in the foot> Ah, much better.

Perfect example of the hype machine hard at work. I disagree that a demo is impossible... especially with the talented folks that Bethesda employs. However, the real challenge is not only finding the time and resources to do the grunt work, but its selecting a representative segment of gameplay that is both fun and accessible to a broader audience.
