Fake DS Lites causing Christmas panic photo

Everybody go hysterical! HM Revenue and Customs has uncovered what it claims to be "hundreds" of fake DS Lites imported into the United Kingdom, and it's warned consumers that it may not have all of them.

The counterfeit consoles are said to have been purchased from questionable Asian Web sites for a mere £40. As an added bonus, they come packed with free danger, as the power adaptors are a potential accident waiting to happen. Shoppers are warned that the power supplies have not been electronically tested and don't meet UK standards.

"UK consumers must be vigilant when purchasing goods online," warns HMRC Intellectual Property rights head Pamela Rogers. "Buy from a reputable or regulated site and, if purchasing from outside the UK or a new website, research the site - check all the facts before you buy.

"At best, these consoles would have led to disappointment on Christmas morning; at worst, they could have caused serious harm or injury."

Wise words indeed. Wise, wise words.

In other news, if anybody wants a PS3 for five quid, shoot me an email. It smells a bit like gravy!

I like to think of this as nature at work. If you go buying consoles from Delboy's Here Today, Gone Tomorrow market stall for a fiver, or 3 for £10 you probably deserve to get home and find you've bought a Popstation 3. And then have it burn down your house.

Well, maybe not that last part.

I was hoping to see a picture of at least one of those fake DS Lites, just to see how fake they look. Sadly, the purchase is online, so is impossible to check the product before buying it.

Turning this into a safety issue is a pretty smart move to discourage people from buying these ripoffs. I'm curious as to how well they work.

I just saw the horrifically uninformed BBC report on the units.

I saw plenty of DS Bootleg cartridges with 5 full game on one cart, but I didn't know they could knock off the whole console. It's only gone this far because the gov't refuses to do anything about bootlegs (I'm assuming China made them...even if they didn't they probably are now ha ha )

Only idiots would think that you could get a brand new DS Lite for £40.

Once again the mantra that every internet shopper must remember shall be repeated:

If it's too good to be true it's either actually a virus, she's not over 18 and thus it's kiddie porn or it is - in fact, too good to be true.

Sucks that people actually buy into this stuff.

I would not want to buy one but dam I would love to phyically check one of those fakes out. See how well they have managed to make it. I wonder if they are as flamable as BBC news reports claim.

I don't these are 100% fake. There are lots of ebay sellers selling 'fake' Special Edition DS Lites - that is genuine DS Lite internals but with fake special edition cases. Don't know how they can be sold at that price though.
