Fail: Portal rejected by Microsoft for Xbox LIVE Arcade

In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Valve's Doug Lombardi has said that the company had offered Portal up for inclusion on Xbox LIVE Arcade, but Microsoft declined.

"I'd love to sell Portal on Xbox LIVE," Lombardi told GI at an EA Games Studio Showcase last week, "[But] the platform holders aren't doing that right now. There's a size limit and all kinds of other things."

Oh, there it is again -- the dreaded XBLA title size cap, causing all sorts of a trouble again. Why Microsoft holds so strongly to that is beyond me, especially when they've already opened up the gates with the Xbox Original titles. Can devs get a little wiggle room here, guys?

It's not as if everyone shouldn't have already picked up the deal-of-the-century The Orange Box, but how about that alleged Portal sequel? Sounds like a nice candidate for XBLA to me, so at least Microsoft has another year or so to change its tune.

Seeing as microsoft only allows 1 to 2 releases per week onto xbla, I'd rather it be something that isn't already available on the system. The arbitrary limit has to go though.

I think it'd be great to have no loadtimes in between levels...damn you MS!!!

I'd totally go for Portal on XBLA, even though I already beat it on the 360 and PC versions of the Orange Box. I loved it on the 360 and my computer doesn't run it so well, so I wouldn't mind having JUST Portal on the 360.

So why don't they put it up on PSN? The Orange Box came out on PS3 also...

Microsoft changes their tune real quick when it comes to Sony getting thing that they don't have.

I hate hearing of games getting held up because of the size cap, but at the same time, the HD is only 20gigs for a majority of owners. So keeping the size low is (partially) a good idea.

Though I'd really prefer a harddrive expansion. Still waiting on that...

I wonder why a lot of them aren't trying PSN?

I find it odd that they only see XBLA as a viable option rather than PSN.

This goes for Epic too with their complaints over GoW.

Yup, if developers released this kind of content on the PSN more and more it, in theory, might/should make MS change their stance on the size issue.

In this day and age, why don't all the 360's come with a standard HDD? Its only 20gigs. Storage space gets cheaper and cheaper every day. I'm sure it costs less than $15 to produce. What is it, $150 for the 120gig HDD? Fucking rip off. Thats like $1.25 per gig. They're cheap and easy to produce. Sure, they're making immediate money off the shitty HDD, but they could make way more if they just included all systems with one because people buy tons of shit from XBL. Having an SKU without one causes most people to not buy into arcade games and DLC. It also limits developers.

My 20 gig HDD is almost full now. When its full of shit I want to keep I won't be able to buy any more content.

Their size limitation for Arcade is total bullshit. These are games that THEY ARE SELLING... FOR MONEY! But they are limiting that because not everybody has an HDD, plus bandwidth ,blah, blah, blah. BUT, you can download demos that are usually over a gig all day every day with no problems. What the fuck.

Right now I would settle for some extra maps for the PC version. I would pay for them on STEAM with cash... well, plastic.

Unless there was new content put together for Portal there is no reason to put it on XBLA...I would rather have my Orange Box disc...The size limit sucks, but the worst is that they charge way too much for the bigger HDD. I can get a 300 gig external for 20 bucks more than the 120 gig MS one. Way overboard on the pricing...

When we do the retrospective of Xbox 360 successes and failures as the platform reaches the end of it's life-cycle it will be interesting to see how Microsoft's optional hdd decision turned out for them in the long run. Gamers, I'm sure, will consider it to be second biggest drawback right behind the abysmal hardware quality.

Damn. I really want to play this, but I'm not that interested in the rest of the Orange Box.

like skullivan and all else who have stated this already, just release it on the PSN! plenty of games have done greatly through that! fl0w, calling all cars, super stardust, warhawk (though that also had the blu ray version), and soon SOCOM, just to name a few.

I'd love to purchase either Portal, or TF2 individually from the PSN. (lame strapped for cash is lame.)
